Soft spots are What Really Makes a Generation Tick. What are their collective ambitions, desires, worries and anxieties? The OpenSocial API is a set of common APIs for building social applications on many websites. There are two ways to access the OpenSocial API: client-side using the JavaScript API and server-side using RESTful data APIs.

Here are some of the things you can do with the OpenSocial Persistence data API:

Make data globally available to all of your application's gadgets and have it served by Google.
Push custom content specific to your gadget's users from your own servers.
Read data written by users to gadget data for later analysis.

OpenID is an open, decentralized, free framework for user-centric digital identity. Applications may use OpenID to assert ownership over a given identity url. The wpopenid plugin lets visitors to a Wordpress blog quickly register, login, and leave comments using their OpenID Identity.

Installation of the plugin is simple. Like any Wordpress plugin, decompress the contents of the archive into /wp-content/plugins/ and Activate the plugin via the administation plugin panel. This plugin does not require any modification of core files or templates.

OpenID is an open, decentralized, free framework for user-centric digital identity.

OpenID starts with the concept that anyone can identify themselves on the Internet the same way websites do-with a URI (also called a URL or web address). Since URIs are at the very core of Web architecture, they provide a solid foundation for user-centric identity.

The first piece of the OpenID framework is authentication -- how you prove ownership of a URI. Today, websites require usernames and passwords to login, which means that many people use the same password everywhere. With OpenID Authentication (see specs), your username is your URI, and your password (or other credentials) stays safely stored on your OpenID Provider (which you can run yourself, or use a third-party identity provider).

Beyond Authentication, the OpenID framework provides the means for users to share other components of their digital identity.

I've published a picture gallery that walks through how to use Yahoo! Pipes to mashup several separate RSS feeds into a single 'river of news' feed. It's one of the simplest exercises you can do with Pipes, but as I wrote last Friday, it's a capability that's been on my wishlist for many years.

How to make your custom Twitter groups

See that RSS link at the bottom of your Twitter page? Copy it.

Head over to Yahoo Pipes.

Start a new pipe. Paste in the URL of your RSS as a Fetch pipe.

Add a filter pipe. Put the real names of the people you need to follow most as part of the title, or if you only know their Twitter name, use that in the guid field. Make sure the pipe is set to permit any meeting these conditions.

Connect everything, preview your output.

Publish to the world, and check the public URL of the pipe output. Bingo - you have a Twitter custom group.

Today Yahoo released an intriguing service called “Pipes”. Based on the concept of unix pipes, it allows you to filter and process RSS feed data in a chain - using a very cool web graphical user interface. The result can be spit out in a variety of formats that can then be used in your RSS reader, on your blog, in a Greasemonkey script or even as the building blocks of more complex pipes.

There is still a lot of room for improvement on the tool (the wish list of functionality grows by the second!) but it’s an awesome and inspiring start. The only major complaint from people is the lack of easy-to-understand documentation. Don’t worry though - I’ll present a step-by-step guide to get you going!

Create your master feed with Yahoo! Pipes

As a prolific netizen, you generate lots of web-based feeds: your Flickr photos, your del.icio.us bookmarks, your weblog posts and your Lifehacker comments, to name a few. Instead of going here, there and everywhere to see all the content you create on the web, combine it all into one master feed using with the newly-launched Yahoo! Pipes.

When you're satisfied, save your Pipe, and grab the permalink for it to view the results, and subscribe to the feed or publish it on your site. Pipe results are also available as JSON, information only you programmer-types will find exciting.

Yahoo Pipes is an interactive tool that enables you to combine many data feeds, like RSS, into a single aggregate. Pipes offers an intuitive visual programming field that lets you filter, remix, and mash-up these feeds to your heart’s content.

In the mean time, here’s the quick guide to building your own Pipe. Note: this guide keeps it simple, but don’t be limited. Once you’ve built a basic Pipe, you can mix and remix until you’ve created the ultimate mash-up. Let’s get started.

There are many, many different ways to use Pipes. Just as in Unix programming (which is where Pipes gets its name from), the possible combinations are endless.

If you get stuck, take a look at Yahoo’s troubleshooting guide. This project is still in beta, so the kinks are still very much in evidence. We’ll keep you posted as the service evolves.

First, you need to know the Template Hierarchy of Category Templates. The Template Hierarchy determines exactly which Template file is used by WordPress when displaying a Category page.

Suppose the Category ID of the Category in question is 6. WordPress uses the first Template file it finds in your current Theme's directory from the following list.

category-6.php
category.php
archive.php
index.php

If you do not have a category-6.php, WordPress will check for a category.php, and so on.

This function will be found in WordPress v2.1 it is NOT supported by WordPress v2.0. wp_list_bookmarks(), displays bookmarks found in the Administration > Blogroll > Manage Blogroll panel. This Template Tag allows the user to control how the bookmarks are sorted and displayed and is intended to replace the Template Tags, get_links_list() and get_links().

This function replaces one or more other functions that have been deprecated. Note: This function is only available in WordPress 2.1 or newer.

wp_list_categories() displays a list of Categories as links. When a link is clicked, all the posts in that Category will display on a Category Page using the appropriate Category Template dictated by the Template Hierarchy rules.

wp_list_categories() works in much the same way as the two template tags it replaces for WordPress 2.1 or newer - list_cats() (deprecated) and wp_list_cats() (deprecated) - but also includes blogroll link categories.
