There have been over 450 mountaintops removed, some 8 million acres devastated, countless streams that support all life in the surrounding areas and mucho destruction of private property that has been washed out due to containment dams bursting with the millions of tons of waste (known as coal slurry).

We last wrote to tell you about a new rule proposed by the Bush Administration's Office of Surface Mining (OSM) that would legalize and expand the worst abuses of mountaintop removal.

If adopted, the new regulation would exempt coal companies from a law that prohibits surface coal mining activities from disturbing areas within 100 feet of streams.

Changing this "buffer zone rule" would destroy thousands of miles of our nation's mountain streams and accelerate the growth of moutaintop removal coal mining -- destroying another 700 mountains over the next decade, according to one estimate.

But today, you have the opportunity to make your voice heard and to stand with thousands of others who are opposing the Bush administration's proposed rule. The OSM today announced that they are extending the period for the public to comment on the propsed rule until November 23rd.
