Missile shoots down falling satellite

The SM-3 races toward space and its rendezvous with the satellite. It had to be quick and accurate--the nonfunctioning National Reconnaissance Office satellite was moving at a sprightly 17,000 miles per hour.

A large amount of debris can be seen a few seconds after impact. Most of the smaller pieces will burn up when they re-enter the Earth's atmosphere. However, there still is a remote danger that some of the bigger pieces could cause damage.

A bow to St. Stupid

The annual St. Stupid's Day Parade, which pays homage to the patron saint of idiocy, has become an April Fools' Day tradition for San Francisco geeks.

So if you didn't get your fill of online tomfoolery for which a certain April day is named, here's a taste of St. Stupid's Day parade, founded in the late 1970s by Ed Holmes, aka Bishop Joey of the First Church of the Last Laugh.

Historians still argue over whether St. Stupid was killed by a falling anvil or a sharp stick in the eye. In any event, he brings out the rabble, and in costume no less.

This year's theme was, "It's the economy, stupid." And appropriately, here's a participant chasing a dollar bill.

Intel to build first six-core chip

Intel shows off its first six-core processor, called Dunnington, which will be available in the second half of 2008. Dunnington is based on the 45nm high-k process technology and is composed of 1.9 billion transistors. It contains a 16MB L3 cache, is socket compatible with the Caneland platform, and is made for virtualization.

Tom Krazit has more details of Intel's new chips and graphics processor.

Flying on a wing and a battery

Electric-powered commercial jets may still be a figment of the imagination, but smaller electric aircraft are already making it to market. Taurus Electro gliders are set to be produced by year's end, which could make them the first two-seater, commercially produced electric aircraft available for purchase.

Pipistrel of Slovenia sells this and other non-electric Taurus gliders, which have won prizes for efficiency. CEO Ivo Boscarol said customers who have ordered the company's other lightweight craft are closely eyeing the new, "greener" electric model, which will cost around $133,000, or 85,000 euros.

The Federal Aviation Administration considers electric aircraft experimental, so they can't be flown under the same rules as light sport aircraft. However, the Experimental Aircraft Association last week asked the FAA to change the classifications, and expects a decision within about six months.

Bat plane to spy for U.S. Army

The U.S. Army wants a 6-inch spy plane that will gather data on sights, sounds, and smells in urban combat areas.

It has given the University of Michigan's College of Engineering $10 million and five years to help make "the bat" plane happen.

Researchers plan to equip the plane with tiny cameras for stereo vision, directional microphones, and devices that detect nuclear radiation and poisonous gas.

Paint on Solar Power!

Installing solar panels on the roof of every new building in the world would go a long way towards solving our energy needs, but as we all know, solar panels are costly and often difficult to install. But what if the solar panel was an integral part of every building? What if solar cells could be painted on building products? Well, according to a team from Swansea University this type of technology will soon be coming to a hardware store near you.

The Swansea Solar Paint project is led by Dave Worsley, who, together with his team, were researching ways to make make steel last longer. By chance that they started to focus on the degradation of paints in steel surfaces, when they realized that their research could lead them to develop a new way of getting energy from the sun.
