According to an article in the Los Angeles Times, spying is up in the United States. But what have we got to show for it? Not much.

The number of Americans being secretly wiretapped or having their financial and other records reviewed by the government has continued to increase as officials aggressively use powers approved after the Sept. 11 attacks. But the number of terrorism prosecutions ending up in court -- one measure of the effectiveness of such sleuthing -- has continued to decline, in some cases precipitously.

The trends, visible in new government data and a private analysis of Justice Department records, are worrisome to civil liberties groups and some legal scholars. According to the U.S. military, Abdullah al-Ajmi was one of three men responsible for the deaths of seven members of Iraqi's security force. Last week, it was reported for the first time that al-Ajmi had been formerly imprisoned at Guantánamo Bay. He was held for three years. Upon his release in Kuwait, he got married and had a child. But on April 26th, he strapped himself with explosives and blew himself up.

As Guantanamo expert Andy Worthington recently wrote, al-Ajmi "recorded a martyrdom tape before his mission, which was translated by the US-based SITE Intelligence Group, which monitors jihadist websites. On the audiotape, al-Ajmi apparently condemned conditions at Guantánamo as 'deplorable,' and stated, 'Whoever can join them and execute a suicide operation, let him do so.'" In this chilling case, the cycle of violence from Guantánamo to Iraq could not be more stark.

<clipSource>https://webmail.optimum.net/iframe_lr.html</clipSource>

Justice for all....

clipped by: mooner-one

Clip Source: webmail.optimum.net

An Independent Prosecutor Should Investigate the Architects of the White House Torture Policy
