There were more than 50 girls from around the country who took part in the pageant, which is, I suppose, a bit of a subjective competition.The jury consisted of real Russian beauty experts: World Class president Olga Slutsker, Russian Vogue editor Alena Doletskaya, Russian producer Igor Matviyenko, and the president of "Dikaya Orkhideya" lingerie chain Alexander Fedorov.

Guests at the pageant included "Miss Universe 2007" Rio Moriya from Japan, and Zilly Zang from China, who was crwoned "Miss World 2006. "

Ksenia Sukhinova, just 20 years old, was officially crowned "Miss Russia 2007." Last year's winner, Tatiana Kotova, passed the crown to Ksenia, who also won $100,000 and the right to represent Russia at "Miss Universe," the international beauty contest.

Estonia cracks down on cows’ 'discharge'

Estonian farmers will now have to pay for their cattle’s contribution to climate change. A new 'digestive gases tax' is introduced to compensate for the greenhouse gas that cows produce during their life, reports MIGnews.com.

An ordinary cow’s daily digestion results in an estimated 350 litres of methane and 1,500 litres of carbon oxide released into the atmosphere.

Experts believe farms account for as much as a quarter of Estonia’s greenhouse gas emission.

Opposition parties called the new tax 'unprecedented for the European Union'.

China eyes Russian farmlands in food push

Chinese companies will be encouraged to buy, or take on lease, farmlands abroad to help guarantee food security, under a plan being considered by Beijing. The move comes amid a food crisis in China.

China has about 40 per cent of the world’s farmers, but just 9 per cent of the world’s arable land.

Africa and South America are among the most likely directions. Russia’s also in the list. However, according to the country’s constitution, foreign companies aren’t allowed to buy Russian land, though still possible to lease.

Acquiring farmlands abroad is now becoming a trend around the globe. Oil-rich but food-poor countries in the Middle East and North Africa explore similar options. Libya is now in talks with Ukraine about growing wheat in the former Soviet republic, while Saudi Arabia says it will invest in agricultural and livestock projects abroad to ensure food security and control commodity prices.

Check Your New Tires For This Code Before They Cause An Accident.

We all know that the code on the sidewall of tires has the numbers for tire size, proper inflation PSI, etc, but there is also a secret code on there that will tell you the week and year that your tire was made. It is at the end of the line on your tire that starts with DOT. Here is the tire from our Subaru, and where the code is:

Just so you can see exactly what I am talking about, that piece of code that says “2607” is what tells you how old your tire is. This tire shown here was made in the 26th week of 2007, so it is a fairly new tire and probably perfectly fine as far as tires go. So the next time you go buy tires, make sure you are getting one that has not been sitting for years and years waiting for you to take it home; even though the tread still looks shiny, if it is an old tire, it could be waiting to cause a serious accident somewhere down the line.

Pricey, but they're onto summin' I think....

Are Backyard Ethanol Brewers an Answer to High-Priced Gas?

Company debuts ethanol home refinery system to offer consumers an alternative to gasoline

A company banking on drivers' weariness of skyrocketing gasoline prices unveiled a home refinery device on Thursday offering another option: ethanol. E-Fuel Corporation says its EFuel100 MicroFueler can produce up to 35 gallons (132 liters) of ethanol a week that consumers can pump directly into their cars and trucks. There is no combustion inside the device, which runs on a standard household 110- to 220-volt AC power supply (consuming about 150 watts*) and uses a membrane system to distill the sugar, yeast and water solution required to make ethanol rather than combustion heating elements, as commercial ethanol producers do.

The Last Sane Republican

Former U.S. Senator from Rhode Island Lincoln Chafee served in Washington, D.C., from 1999 to 2006. He was the only Republican Senator who voted against authorizing Bush to attack Iraq. A lot of Democrats did not do as well that day, or on several other days, as Chafee did. But his party moved away from him, and from the nation, and from the state of Rhode Island, and voters showed Chafee the door in the 2006 elections that saw membership in the party of Cheney and Bush become the greatest liability for incumbents and challengers alike.

The Republican Party as a national mainstream organization began with Abraham Lincoln and ended with Lincoln Chafee. Before and after those Lincolns, the party was not something that most Americans could relate to, was not something that many people could imagine offered any sort of benefit to all people as opposed to particular types of people.
