Africa waiting for net revolution

Africa's internet users are among the minority

More than a third of Africa's citizens should have access to broadband internet by 2012, a conference of technology leaders is set to hear.

Fewer than four out of 100 Africans currently use the internet, and broadband penetration is below 1%.

"If you have just 1% of broadband access today you have 99% of opportunity.

One of the biggest problems facing internet development in Africa is a lack of interconnectivity. More than 70% of internet traffic within Africa is routed outside the continent, driving up costs for business and consumers.

"Africa has to create the opportunities; Africa doesn't need charity," he said.

Car manufacturers around the world are working on vehicle-to-vehicle technologies to help make driving safer.

"The wireless system has a range of 500m outside the city and 100m in the city," said Prof Wieker. He said the consortium had opted for wireless rather than a mobile network because it was faster.

"It is useful not only as a safety system but could also be used to improve traffic efficiency,"

Despite being based on existing technologies, the project has hurdles to overcome, including working with similar schemes under development in North America and Japan.

"We're committed to ensuring that the technology is affordable for all car owners. That's our goal."

Video interview - 3D printing for all

One of the most popular stories we published this year was about a cheap desktop 3D printer that could perhaps kickstart a revolution in home fabrication.

The Fab@Home project is the brainchild of Evan Malone and Hod Lipson at Cornell University, US, and they've come up with a relatively cheap ($2,400) kit so that anyone to build a machine that prints 3D shapes using a range of inexpensive materials.

A Sound Way To Turn Heat Into Electricity

Science Daily — University of Utah physicists developed small devices that turn heat into sound and then into electricity. The technology holds promise for changing waste heat into electricity, harnessing solar energy and cooling computers and radars.

The research is funded by the U.S. Army, which is interested in "taking care of waste heat from radar, and also producing a portable source of electrical energy which you can use in the battlefield to run electronics" he says.

Using sound to convert heat into electricity has two key steps. Symko and colleagues developed various new heat engines (technically called "thermoacoustic prime movers") to accomplish the first step: convert heat into sound.

Then they convert the sound into electricity using existing technology: "piezoelectric" devices that are squeezed in response to pressure, including sound waves, and change that pressure into electrical current. "Piezo" means pressure or squeezing.

Microsoft unveils table computer

Microsoft has unveiled a new touch-sensitive coffee table-shaped computer called "Surface".

Designed to do away with the need for a traditional mouse and keyboard, users can instead use their fingers to operate the computer.

Microsoft says small groups of people will be able to use each Surface machine simultaneously.

A Pennsylvania entrepreneur has developed technology that gives you all the battery juice you need directly from the air. Business 2.0 reports.

How much money could you make from a technology that replaces electrical wires? A startup called Powercast, along with the more than 100 companies that have inked agreements with it, is about to start finding out. Powercast and its first major partner, electronics giant Philips, are set to launch their first device powered by electricity broadcast through the air.

t may sound futuristic, but Powercast's platform uses nothing more complex than a radio--and is cheap enough for just about any company to incorporate into a product. A transmitter plugs into the wall, and a dime-size receiver (the real innovation, costing about $5 to make) can be embedded into any low-voltage device. The receiver turns radio waves into DC electricity, recharging the device's battery at a distance of up to 3 feet.

UN debut for $100 laptop for poor

The green machine was showcased for the first time by MIT's Nicholas Negroponte at the UN net summit in Tunis.

A prototype of a cheap and robust laptop for pupils has been welcomed as an "expression of global solidarity" by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan.

He plans to have millions of $100 machines in production within a year.
