Eyes -- nostrils -- lips -- shiny things. My eyes scanned the photo of two women almost the way a monkey's would, going first to the faces, specifically features that would indicate friend, foe, or possible mate, then to the brightest objects in the image: a blue bottle, a pendant. Surprisingly, it took forever (almost three seconds) for me to look at the famous -- and famously gorgeous -- face in the photo, Angelina Jolie.

We process visual information very quickly, as the brain electronically parcels parts of images to different cortical areas concerned with faces, colors, shapes, motion, and many other aspects of a scene, where they are broken down even further. Then the brain puts all that information back together into a coherent composite before directing the eyes to move.

the eye physiologically sharpens and is drawn to lines, corners, and junctions, as well as to faces, while the unconscious mind is attuned to Fight or Flight situations.

In 1906, millionaire industrialist Andrew Carnegie was approached by ~~Melvin~~ Melvil Dewey, the head of the New York libraries, and Brander Matthews, a Columbia University professor, with a revolutionary plan to simplify spelling. Carnegie was enthusiastic. He believed that easier spelling could lead to world peace. Together, the threesome formed the Simplified Spelling Board; their expressed goal was to convince authorities to begin changing the spelling of 300 words.

President Theodore Roosevelt was an instant convert to the plan. On August 29, 1906, he ordered the U.S. Printer to use the new spelling on all executive branch publications.

Roosevelt’s plan made front-page news, both here and abroad. Unfortunately for TR, most of the publicity was unfavorable. U.S. newspaper mocked the idea, and the London Times ridiculed him with a headline reading “Roosevelt Spelling Makes Britons Laugh.”

Congress was outraged by Roosevelt’s decree, too.

Roosevelt quickly withdrew his support for the plan.

I love metaphors,so I just thought I'd do a clip then I figured if it was going to fit I was going to have to be more specific. I am amazed at the way a metaphor can translate ideas between people, that may have been mutually exclusive. The way when there is a completely new concept related, we may be unable to find any direct analogy, but a metaphor can provide enough clues to transmit understanding. It can be a case of I can't explain exactly, but I can show you where to look.
The way poets, musicians, artists, writers use metaphors creatively to allow new ideas or emotions to be accepted more easily.

In cognitive linguistics, conceptual metaphor refers to the understanding of one idea, or conceptual domain in terms of another, for example, understanding quantity in terms of directionality (e.g. "prices are rising"). A conceptual domain can be any coherent organization of human experience. For many metaphors, the mapping between conceptual domains correspond to neural mappings in the brain, which entails that the human conceptual structure is tightly bound to its perceptual system.

This idea, and a detailed examination of the underlying processes, was

explored by George Lakoff and Mark Johnson in their work Metaphors We Live By. Other cognitive scientists study subjects similar to conceptual metaphor under the labels "analogy" and "conceptual blending."

There are two main roles for the conceptual domains posited in conceptual metaphors:

Source domain: the conceptual domain from which we draw metaphorical expressions.

Target domain: the conceptual domain that we try to understand.

Scientists believe they have located a new brain area essential for good memory - the "irrelevance filter".

People who are good at remembering things, even with distractions, have more activity in the basal ganglia on brain scans, the Swedish team found.

The work in Nature Neuroscience could help explain why some people are better at remembering things than others.

Clinically, it could also aid the understanding of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

The ability to hold information in the mind so that it is immediately accessible is known as working memory.

We use working memory all of the time - for example, when doing a simple maths calculation in our head or recalling a telephone number.

There will be many brain regions that filter irrelevant information, so it is too early to tell if these findings will have a bearing on conditions such as ADHD

3. Heroin. If you had a cough in the late 19th century, a dose of heroin would fix it. This now illegal, extremely addictive drug was originally developed and sold by Bayer … as a cough suppressant.

4. Lobotomies.

It's an object of absolutely perfect geometric equilbrium. There is only one position in which it can rest, and it will always return to the exact same posture, because the balance of its proportions all pull it to a single incredibly narrow center of gravity.

And, it is TOTALLY NAKED! I mean, just check out the curves on this one!

How did we get this Gombloc? Well, there were a few Russian mathematicians sitting around (probably stoned) who thought it would be cool. So they just sat down and did the math "for a few years" and then tested thousands of pebles (once again, STONED!) until they just decided to make one themselves.

I am so not worthy!

Self-Righting Object, The

The Gomboc is a roundish piece of clear synthetic material with gently peaked, organic curves. It looks like a piece of modern art. But if you tip it over, something unusual happens: it rights itself.

The Gomboc is a result of a long mathematical quest. In 1995, the Russian mathematician Vladimir Arnold mused that it would be possible to create a “mono-monostatic” object — a three-dimensional thingy that purely by dint of its geometry had only one possible way to balance upright.

The challenge intrigued two scientists — Gabor Domokos and Peter Varkonyi, both of the Budapest University of Technology and Economics. They spent a few years doing the math, and it seemed as if a mono-monostatic object could, in fact, exist. They began looking to see if they could find a naturally occurring example; at one point, Domokos was so obsessed that he spent hours testing 2,000 pebbles on a beach to see if they could right themselves. (None could.)
