In linguistics, a defective verb is a verb with an incomplete conjugation.

The most commonly recognized defective verbs in English are the class of preterite-present verbs — can, may, shall, might, must, and will (which was not historically a preterite-present but has joined the class in modern English).

For example, can lacks an infinitive, future tense, participle, and gerund. The missing parts of speech, however, can be expressed by using the appropriate forms of to be plus able to. So, while I could do it and I was able to do it are equivalent, one cannot say *I will can, *I have canned, or *canning do it, but would still be able to say I will be able to, I have been able to, and being able to do it.

Examples from other languages

French: frire ("to fry", lacks non-compound past forms), éclore ("to hatch", theorically lacks an imperfect, although speakers easily fill it in)

US 'pregnant man' has baby girl

Thomas Beatie, 34, is legally male but kept his female reproductive organs after having breast surgery to remove glands and flatten his chest.

Mr Beatie, who sports a wispy beard, made headlines around the world when he revealed in April that he was pregnant.

"I opted not to do anything with my reproductive organs because I wanted to have a child one day," he said.

Mr Beatie grew up in Hawaii as Tracy Lagondin and was a Girl Scout, model and finalist in a teenage beauty pageant.

He has been married for five years to wife Nancy.

"This baby is totally healthy. This is what I consider a normal pregnancy."

'RETALIATORY MEASURES'

In a report released Thursday on "visa requirements in breach of the principle of reciprocity," the European Commission is proposing "retaliatory measures" that would force US diplomats to secure visas before entering EU countries.

"Despite all efforts of the Commission and individual member states and the promises by the USA to include additional EU member states into the Visa Waiver Program this year," the report says, "no tangible progress has been made. Therefore, the Commission will propose retaliatory measures – e.g., temporary restoration of the visa requirement for US nationals holding diplomatic and service/official passports – as from 1 January 2009 if no progress is achieved."

Painter fined for smoking in van

Gordon Williams says he had popped to the shops earlier this month, when he was pulled over by council officials.

"I was told that because my van is my place of work I had broken the smoking laws," he said.

"I am dumbfounded - the van is only insured for private use and to get me to and from work," added Mr Williams, from Llanafan, near Aberystwyth.

"It not my place of work - I decorate houses not vans."

By unfolding the sheet and stepping to the side of the street, she showed how a woman walking alone could hide behind it to outfox a potential attacker.

If the fizzy drink machine seems a little elaborate, not to mention impractical, she has also come up with the 'manhole bag' which is supposed to look like a sewer cover when you put it down so unwitting thieves walk right by without noticing it.

For children, she has a backpack that transforms into a fire hydrant.

She admits that making the switch from skirt to vending machine might prove a little tricky "especially when your hands are shaking".

Tsukioka says the idea was inspired by a trick used by Japanese ninja assassins, who cloaked themselves in black blankets so they couldn't be seen at night

Eyes -- nostrils -- lips -- shiny things. My eyes scanned the photo of two women almost the way a monkey's would, going first to the faces, specifically features that would indicate friend, foe, or possible mate, then to the brightest objects in the image: a blue bottle, a pendant. Surprisingly, it took forever (almost three seconds) for me to look at the famous -- and famously gorgeous -- face in the photo, Angelina Jolie.

We process visual information very quickly, as the brain electronically parcels parts of images to different cortical areas concerned with faces, colors, shapes, motion, and many other aspects of a scene, where they are broken down even further. Then the brain puts all that information back together into a coherent composite before directing the eyes to move.

the eye physiologically sharpens and is drawn to lines, corners, and junctions, as well as to faces, while the unconscious mind is attuned to Fight or Flight situations.

The Security Council today voted unanimously to terminate the United Nations Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea (UNMEE), after restrictions placed on the peacekeeping operation by the latter country undermined its ability to carry out its mandate.

The Council requested Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to further explore with Ethiopia and Eritrea the possibility of a UN presence in those two countries, in the context of the maintenance of international peace and security.

“The Council has taken this decision after both parties rejected options for a possible follow-on presence put before them by the Secretary-General at the request of the Security Council,” Mr. Ban’s spokesperson said in a statement issued following the Council’s action.
