Earth's Cries Recorded in Space

The sound is awful, a new recording from space reveals.

Scientists have known about the radiation since the 1970s. It is created high above the planet, where charged particles from the solar wind collide with Earth's magnetic field. It is related to the phenomenon that generates the colorful aurora, or Northern Lights.

This means they're more detectable to anyone who might be listening.

The Auroral Kilometric Radiation (AKR), as it is called, is beamed out in a narrow plane, as if someone had put a mask over a torch and left a slit for the radiation to escape.

Chinese censorship and journalist prisoner

Today is an Amnesty International rallying day for human rights. I found out about it through a Facebook promotion: Bloggers Unite for Human Rights. The topic that I, as a blogger, would like to highlight is the continued censorship in China, particularly internet censorship. The filtering, blocking, and state monitoring of ideas is offensive to me as a librarian, and if you feel the same way then you may want to read about the imprisonment of Shi Tao, a Chinese journalist.

Amnesty International provides an online action center where you can express your opinion on human rights issues to government officials and other people in positions of power.

Facebook’s Rights Grab: How Far Does It Go?

What I found is that unknowingly people using applications that reference photos are in fact indirectly posting photos to Facebook subjecting them to the excessively far-reaching terms specified in their Terms of Use. It’s not very obvious but many applications that you’d think would reference images from their source location (say a blog for example via Flog Blog) are in fact duplicating images and hosting them on Facebook. The net result being images hosted on Facebook as though you had manually uploaded them. The distinction legally is identical, but is far from obvious for the end user.
