Like Groening, I too used to spend hours drawing Peanuts cartoons because they "looked" easy. I loved Snoopy! I wanted a beagle before I knew that they were crazy dogs. I owned a Snoopy snowcone machine - which they re-released and I saw at Urban Outfitters. I had thing for Schroeder.

Oh boy, Charlie Brown

My grade-school buddies and I constantly attempted to draw our cartoon favourites, from Popeye to Batman, Sad Sack to Huckleberry Hound. We especially loved copying the Peanuts kids, because they seemed simple enough at first glance. But those giant heads and dots for eyes were trickier than they looked. Our Charlie Browns weren't sweet and impassive. In our wobbly hands, Charlie Brown's big, round head turned into a macrocephalic oval, his eye dots drifted apart, and his body got fatter and more squished. No matter how much we practised, our Charlie Browns looked like freaks.

Munich’s Oktoberfest began in 1810 as a harvest festival formalized to mark the wedding of Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese. The celebrators traditionally drank March beer, or Märzen, which was brewed in March in large quantities before the seasonal brewing hiatus and then stored, or lagered, in icy caves. It was consumed gradually over the summer, then finished at Oktoberfest, which is why some bottles can paradoxically be called both Märzen and Oktoberfest beer.

I have an account with Washington Mutual. What changed when the FDIC put the bank into receivership?

Not much. The FDIC took over Washington Mutual on September 25, 2008 -- the largest bank failure in history -- then almost immediately sold all of the bank's deposits, loans and branches to JP Morgan Chase for $1.9 billion. All accounts were transferred to Chase, regardless of the size, even if they were above the FDIC limits. Nobody lost any money on deposits at Washington Mutual.

Take A Deep Breath: Some Perspective On The Financial Crisis

Well, there are tons of good resources that can give you bits and pieces of it. A good place to start, however, may be The Giant Pool of Money podcast that was on This American Life a few months back (which we mentioned recently). The NY Times just had an article about what led to that podcast being created. It's also worth noting (oddly not mentioned in the NYT piece) that the two reporters who put that together -- Adam Davidson and Alex Blumberg -- are collaborating on a new daily podcast and blog for NPR called Planet Money, which is fantastic. They're also working on a new episode of This American Life for next week about the current crisis. That will be a must-listen as well, I'm sure.

So, what happened?

Campaigns reach final agreement on presidential debates

(CNN) – The McCain and Obama campaigns said Thursday that they have nailed down the details for this fall’s three 90-minute presidential debates.

As announced two weeks ago, Jim Lehrer of PBS’s The NewsHour will moderate the first presidential debate between Barack Obama and John McCain September 26 at the University of Mississippi. The faceoff will focus on foreign policy and national security issues.

This advertisement for the Republican ticket of Senator John McCain and Gov. Sarah Palin is scheduled to be broadcast in what the McCain campaign describes as key states, though as of late Friday it had run only once, in Denver on Sept. 10. Called “Disrespectful,” it is 30 seconds long.

SCORECARD The advertisement is the latest in a number that resort to a dubious disregard for the facts. The nonpartisan political analysis group Factcheck.org has already criticized “Disrespectful” as “particularly egregious,” saying that it “goes down new paths of deception,” and is “peddling false quotes.” Even the title is troublesome. “Disrespectful” is one of those words that is loaded with racial and class connotations that many people consider offensive.
