Earth's Cries Recorded in Space

The sound is awful, a new recording from space reveals.

Scientists have known about the radiation since the 1970s. It is created high above the planet, where charged particles from the solar wind collide with Earth's magnetic field. It is related to the phenomenon that generates the colorful aurora, or Northern Lights.

This means they're more detectable to anyone who might be listening.

The Auroral Kilometric Radiation (AKR), as it is called, is beamed out in a narrow plane, as if someone had put a mask over a torch and left a slit for the radiation to escape.

Top 10 New Species Named

Thousands of new plant and animal species were discovered in 2007, though only 10 were bizarre enough, lethal enough or just plain cool enough to garner spots on a new Top-10 list.

Each year, the International Institute for Species Exploration (IISE) at Arizona State University issues the Top 10 New Species list, which spotlights flora and fauna described during the previous year, so in this case 2007.

"Most people do not realize just how incomplete our knowledge of Earth's species is or the steady rate at which taxonomists are exploring that diversity," said Quentin Wheeler, an entomologist and director of IISE.

Chinese censorship and journalist prisoner

Today is an Amnesty International rallying day for human rights. I found out about it through a Facebook promotion: Bloggers Unite for Human Rights. The topic that I, as a blogger, would like to highlight is the continued censorship in China, particularly internet censorship. The filtering, blocking, and state monitoring of ideas is offensive to me as a librarian, and if you feel the same way then you may want to read about the imprisonment of Shi Tao, a Chinese journalist.

Amnesty International provides an online action center where you can express your opinion on human rights issues to government officials and other people in positions of power.

Two measures on the state ballot use the words eminent domain. But Prop 98 is a deceptive scheme financed by wealthy landlords that would eliminate rent control and make it easier to evict people from their homes to make way for new developments. 98 also contains loopholes that would hurt our environment and increase taxpayer costs. There is only one that is true eminent domain reform - Prop. 99, which protects homeowners from eminent domain abuse. Here's why you should vote NO on 98 and YES on 99.

clipper's remarks: I am not sure how they programmed this search engine to search for meaning/context. I am just testing it out now but I will try to share my thoughts on it later. If anyone out there has tried it already, let me know what you think.

I am a little wary of things that claim to search or figure out the "meaning" of a person's searches. How did they do that? How can you search context?

So ultimately I decided to just use different fonts and weights to write their names (seen at the top of this post). But just floating in the frame without a sense of place, I’m not convinced that works, either. And it’s less amazing than pictures made of letters.

Study: Young Kids Online

We discovered that the digital world offers a wealth of opportunity for young children to play and learn. But even in this small sample of 10 families we found–too easily, in several circumstances–repeated examples of attempts to manipulate children for the sake of commerce.
