Microsoft's new Vista OS, but also fully integrated into Yahoo Mail when it comes out of
beta (the Ajax version). Plus we expect some of Google's RSS experiments to come into
play more in 2007 - especially Google Base, which uses an RSS variant called GData. In
addition to all this, new and interesting (if not overly innovative) services will be
built on top of RSS - e.g. the Techmeme RSS Ad-delivery.

- Widgets exploded in 2006 but will continue rising in 2007 thanks to blogs and
social networks like MySpace. MyBlogLog is an
example of what we'll see more of, but also look out for more e-commerce and multimedia
widgets.

- Microsoft's Windows Live services will gain real momentum next year, thanks
to Vista and also Live services going out of beta and usurping their MSN counterparts
(e.g. Windows Live Mail taking over Hotmail).

- WebOS /GoogleOS: To counter the Vista and Windows Live threat, Google may
come out with some form of GoogleOS.
This is contentious, but one theory is that if Vista's default services (Live.com) can
put pressure on Google, then we may see a Google optimized Linux .

- Browser War
II. In 2007 expect the competition between IE7 and FireFox (plus Flock, Opera and
Maxthon) to be intense. Perhaps we'll even see a G-Browser? Stranger things have
happened.... or will Google continue to utilize Firefox as its cover? The latter is more likely, as Google does not want to seem too distracted with operating systems and browsers;
this would be a bad signal for the NASDAQ investors.

- Broadband continues to grow: For example Fiber Connections in France. There
will be similar baby steps towards faster internet all around the world. After all, the
broadband revolution created web 2.0, Google and web apps. So it's worth following this
trend!

- VoIP space will really hot up. Skype and a bunch of new
competitors will compete and potentially disrupt the telecoms industry.

Tags: 2007, blog, business, future, google, ideas, internet, microsoft, mobile, predictions, rss, tech, technology, trend, trends, web, web2.0, 2.0

<clipSource>http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/2007_web_predictions.php</clipSource>

2006 Web Technology Trends

clipped by: mingkymomo

Clip Source: www.readwriteweb.com

2006 Web Technology Trends

- Widgets (mini web apps) were all the rage this year, culminating in its own
conference. Related to this, 'personalized
start pages' (live.com, netvibes, pageflakes, etc) ramped up, enabling users to
collect their widgets together on the one site.

- Online video was hot, hot, hot this year! There are currently a host of YouTube wannabes on the market. The
best chance for success for all these startups vying for attention, is to either come out
with a next-generation product that takes online video functionality to the next level
and/or target a specific niche market.

- 2006 was also the year that Web 2.0 got overhyped and the term is now
generally accepted as just a marketing term, akin to Dot Com. But whatever you call it -
I prefer to use the term 'Social Web' or even 'read/write Web' nowadays - this current
era of the Web is making a big impact. Mainstream media is taking on board many
read/write philosophies. This is evidenced in many ways - e.g. News Corp acquiring
MySpace and seeing enormous growth; blogs are now accepted by mainstream media and
businesses; etc. Also the overwhelming presence of media people at the 2006 Web 2.0
Summit was evidence that Social Web trends are influencing a broader cross-spectrum
of people now.

- Undoubtedly 2006 has been the year of the social network. MySpace, YouTube,
Facebook have been the three outstanding success stories - but also impressive was Bebo
(in the UK particularly) and there was strong growth in existing web 2.0 networks like
Flickr and del.icio.us. The zenith of this social networking craze was probably Google buying
YouTube for $1.65 B.

- Ajax had strong
growth this year and according to some reports is not that far behind Flash now.

Tags: technology, internet, net, widget, ajax, video, 2.0, social, network, 2006, year

<clipSource>http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/2006_web_technology_trends.php</clipSource>

Top 99 Undiscovered Web Sites

clipped by: bookchick49

Clip Source: www.pcmag.com
