TOP 30 Wordpress Plugins in Blogosphere

The first place among Wordpress plugins goes to Akismet. 34 out of 48 bloggers are using this plugin. Obviously the spam is a very serious issue and Akismet is doing a great job combating it.

Google Sitemap Generator came in second with 27 votes. Looks like a lot of bloggers are starting to care about SEO and this plugin is the best tool to tell Google how it should crawl your blog and where to find everything you want found.

Related posts by Wasabi takes the third place. As the name suggests, this plugin generates a list of related posts based on the text of blog entry. It is a great tool to increase the stickiness of your blog by showing your readers similar posts that you’ve written on the subject. Although since I started using Chitika RPU’s on my tech blogs, I don’t use this plugin there. 19 out 48 bloggers have used this plugin on their blogs.

2004: Web 2.0 coined, the movement named.

2006: "You" named TIME Magazine's "Person of the Year", a tribute to Web 2.0.

2007: You are here.

2008: Firefox 3.14159 ships (those geeks at Mozilla just won't be able to help themselves, and the resulting flamewar and developer resignations over whether to call it "PiFox" or not will lead to it being dubbed "PyreFox"). This version adds offline support to Ajax web applications. People will want to call the result "Web 3.0" but that term was claimed in advance by the Semantic Web so the blogosphere will quickly decide to call this Web 2.86 but the period will be quickly quickly lost (to the condemnation of purists) and the media will refer to "Web 286".

In Your Home – Conserve Energy

Clean or replace air filters on your air conditioning unit at least once a month.

If you have central air conditioning, do not close vents in unused rooms.

Lower the thermostat on your water heater to 120.

Cool trick to rename your Start button

I remember the first book I read about Windows ‘95. They were beginning proudly to present the differences between it and it’s predecessor, Windows 3.11, and the first thing they mentioned was the Start button.
Now here’s an interesting trick if you’re tired of that green little button in the lower left corner of your screen. It’s quite simple and it doesn’t take more than 2-3 minutes.

If you wonder how come you missed it so far, I’ll tell you. It’s actually hidden, as in not available, and we’re going to have to tweak your computer up a bit.

The process consists in a single step and that would be editing explorer.exe. For this, we will need a simple tool, that I provided for you for a quick download here. It’s called Resource Hack and it’s just about everything we need. So, download the ZIP archive, extract it and run “ResHacker.exe” from inside the archive. Click File, then OPEN, then point out your ‘explorer.exe’ in your Windows directory.

A browsing tree should open with the menus on the left. Click on String Table and you will see some numbers. Expand 37 (or 38) and click on “1033″. You should see a quoted line in the right window, that says: 578,”start”. You can make the desired change for 37 and 38 as well. So, replace the “start” between the quotes with whatever you want it to display, then click “Compile script”.

Now, all you have to do is restart your computer, or simply log off and back on. The start button will display the chosen text. Here are sample results below. Enjoy the trick.

BOMB ATTACKS REPORTED IN BANGKOK

A number of bombs or grenades have exploded in Bangkok early on New Year's Eve, wounding dozens of people in at least two places. At least one person was reported killed.

Early reports said there were at least five explosions in various parts of the capital. Two were reported near the Klong Toey market, and near the Victory Monument.

TV reports said there was a large explosive device in the Saphan Kwai area of Bangkok, where one person was reportedly killed. Unconfirmed reports telephoned to BangkokPost.com said there was a bombing at Seacon Square, the largest mall in Asia, in the east end of Bangkok. A fifth explosion was reported from Sukhumvit Soi 62, a major intersection with the capital's main expressway system.

"There was no warning. It is quite shocking. We've got at least one child very seriously injured in my area and others are injured," said Police Maj-Gen Anand Srisiran, chief of Metropolitan Police District Five.

Witnesses told police in some places that they saw people throwing what looked to be grenades shortly before they explosions.

New Year's Eve parties were just kicking off when the bombs began going off shortly after sundown at 6 p.m.

The coordinated attacks are unprecedented in Bangkok.

However, political feelings have run high for more than a year, and there have been reports of political violence aimed against the military junta which ousted ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra on Sept 19 - primarily the suspected burning of schools.

In addition, some intelligence sources had suggested in the past two weeks that Islamist extremists leading the southern insurgency might try to spread their attacks to the capital. They have never operated out of the deep South.

The number and extent of casualties were unknown immediately after the explosions. Graphic footage shown on television showed damaged vehicles and blood-stained streets and pavements.

It’s the time of year to be posting random predictions for 2007. Here are 2007 Ajax predictions from Dion and myself, please post your own in the comments.

Dion predicts:

Ajax beats AJAX in all but bad newspapers.

Someone tries to coin Ajax 2.0.

A large amount of apps have flash AND ajax, and users don’t know or care.

Many frameworks consilidate or die.

A widget api means componts can run on many frameworks using one api.

Ajax wpf/e interop.

Dashboards become front boards.

More desktop apps get written with javascript.

Michael predicts:

2005 was the year that developers learned all about Ajax and by 2006 everyone else in the industry had caught up. In 2007, is is mainstream users who become acutely aware of the trend towards rich applications inside the browser, and discover that even word-processors and spreadsheets - along with a wide array of workplace applications - can be webified. At the same time, users remain oblivious - and rightly so - to the underlying technologies that power them.

The boundaries of Ajax harden, with most developers gaining a clear understanding of what it can and can’t do with modern browsers and managers in a better position to decide on application architecture (whether to use Ajax, Flash, desktop, etc.).

More attention on Ajax accessibility due to some government report or court case.

Google Office. Finally!

Backlash against Google Office as managers learn that their data must be hosted externally in order to use it. Pressure from bloggers and some analysts to make an Office appliance that can live behind the firewall, but it’s not happening in 2007.

Other fringe technologies grow, but remain, well, fringe. Such as Host-Proof Hosting and applications involving offline storage.

Mobile web development continues to suck.

IE7 causes more than a few headaches.

Firebug is installed by pretty much any developer using Firefox.

Perhaps it's because human beings like to assign markers to their perception of time, or maybe because it's a slow news week, but the final week of December invariably generates "best of" lists. The Crave blog at C|Net UK has compiled a list of Apple rumors that they feel are the most prominent, but anyone who has been watching Apple Computer for more than a few years will likely disagree.

Mac OS for the PC
Return of the Newton
Apple to buy BeOS
A "secret" OS X build
iPhone
iTunes record label
"True" video iPod
30th anniversary Mac
Apple to buy Disney

While the choices are interesting, they seem to be weighted towards the post-millennial Apple Computer, and even then shouldn't the rumor that Steve Jobs was dying make the list? Going back further, where is Copland? The mythical OS occupied the minds of every Mac user from at least 1995 until the return of Steve Jobs. And while a revised Newton might be considered an iTablet, where is the perpetual rumor that is the low-cost, expandable desktop? How can you have a rumor list without an xMac?

If you were paid to write whatever popped into your head after a cup of tea in the morning, what would make your list of Apple rumors for all time?
