Japanese fooled in poodle scam

Thousands of Japanese have been swindled in a scam in which they were sold Australian and British sheep and told they were poodles.

Flocks of sheep were imported to Japan and then sold by a company called Poodles as Pets, marketed as fashionable accessories, available at $1,600 each.

The scam was uncovered when Japanese moviestar Maiko Kawamaki went on a talk-show and wondered why her new pet would not bark or eat dog food.

She was crestfallen when told it was a sheep.

One couple said they became suspicious when they took their "dog" to have its claws trimmed and were told it had hooves.

Japanese police believe there could be 2,000 people affected by the scam, which operated in Sapporo and capitalised on the fact that sheep are rare in Japan, so many do not know what they look like.

"Sadly we think there is more than one company operating in this way.

Many of the sheep have now been donated to zoos and farms.

Subtitle-Reading Glasses Make Cinema-Going for the Hard of Hearing Less, um, Hard

Here's something that could be a godsend for the hard of hearing who feel they are not getting their money's worth in the movie theater. A nifty little idea thought up by some clever people at Madrid's Carlos III University for the Spanish Center for Subtitles and Closed Captions, this gadget fixes onto a person's glasses to give them access to subtitles—even in a subtitle-free showing.

The technology is simple: There is a computer in the cinema that emits the subtitles to within 50 meters, and also deals with their synchronization. A receptor in the glasses captures the signal and projects it onto the microscreen, which fits over the right-hand lens. It's easy as pie to use—one button turns the gadget on and off and another one restarts it. – Ad Dugdale

Saitek Mice in an Easter Basket, Why Not?

Now that we have all recovered from St. Patty's Day, it is time to look ahead to the next holiday that can be exploited for financial gain. Easter is coming up, and what is a better way to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus than with a basket filled with Saitek mice. I probably wouldn't mind getting a solid mouse in an Easter basket. It is a hell of a lot better than Peeps and Hershey Kisses that I would end up vomiting later. By the way, the mice sell for $20 if you would like to pursue an Easter peripheral basket, like Saitek is suggesting with this cutesy promotional picture. –Travis Hudson

The bucolic campus of Virginia Tech, in Blacksburg, Va., would seem to have little in common with the Trolley Square shopping mall in Salt Lake City. Yet both share an important characteristic, common to the site of almost every other notorious mass murder in recent years: They are "gun-free zones."

The founder of the University of Virginia, Thomas Jefferson, understood the harms resulting from the type of policy created at Virginia Tech. In his "Commonplace Book," Jefferson copied a passage from Cesare Beccaria, the founder of criminology, which was as true on Monday as it always has been:

"Laws that forbid the carrying of arms . . . disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes . . . Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man."
