In the subsequent trial of the soldiers, their lawyer, John Adams, argued that if they were endangered by the mob they had the legal right to fight back, and so were innocent. If they were provoked but not endangered, they were at most guilty of manslaughter. The jury agreed and acquitted six of them. Two were found guilty of murder because there was overwhelming evidence that they fired directly into the crowd. However, Adams used a loophole in British Common Law and by proving to the judge that they could read by having them read from the Bible their crime was reduced to manslaughter. Two were found guilty of manslaughter and punished by branding on their thumbs. The jury's decisions suggest that they believed the soldiers had felt threatened by the crowd. Patrick Carr, the fifth victim, corroborated this with a deathbed testimony delivered to his doctor.

"The Boston Massacre" refers to an incident involving the deaths of five civilians at the hands of British troops on March 5, 1770, the legal aftermath of which helped spark the rebellion in some of the British colonies in America which culminated in the American Revolution. A tense situation due to a heavy British military presence in Boston boiled over to incite brawls between soldiers and civilians, and eventually led to troops discharging their muskets after being attacked by a rioting crowd. Three civilians were killed at the scene of the shooting, and two died after the incident.

A woman accompanied her husband to the doctor's office. After his checkup, the doctor called the wife into his office alone.

He said, "Your husband is suffering from a very severe disease, combined with horrible stress."

"If you don't do the following, your husband will surely die. Each morning, fix him a healthy breakfast. Be pleasant, and make sure he is in a good mood. For lunch make him a nutritious meal. For dinner prepare an especially nice meal for him. Don't burden him with chores, as he probably had a hard day. Don't discuss your problems with him, it will only make his stress worse. And most importantly. Make love with him many times a week & satisfy his every whim."

"If you can do this for the next 10 months to a year, I think your husband will regain his health completely."

On the way home, the husband asked his wife, "What did the doctor say?" "You're going to die," she replied.

US 'penis photo' doctor suspended

A surgeon at a prestigious US hospital is facing a disciplinary hearing after he allegedly took a photo of a patient's penis during an operation

Dr Adam Hansen, of Arizona's Mayo Clinic Hospital, is accused of taking the snap while conducting gallbladder surgery earlier in December

The chief of general surgery allegedly showed the photo to fellow surgeons

The patient is a strip club owner

whose penis is tattooed with the words "Hot Rod"

A member of the surgical staff tipped off local newspaper The Arizona Republic about the incident in an anonymous call

The patient, who said the tattoo was done for a $1,000 (£500) bet, continued: "Now I feel violated, betrayed and disgusted

The clinic said Dr Hansen, who is on administrative leave pending an investigation, could face the sack at a disciplinary hearing next week

Chief executive of the hospital Denis Cortese said

"The insult to our reputation, our patients, and our staff is the greatest outrage. We are taking this extremely seriously."

An ancient doctor's surgery unearthed by Italian archaeologists has cast new light on what a trip to the doctor would have been like in Roman times. Far from crude, the medical implements discovered show that doctors, their surgeries and the ailments they treated have changed surprisingly little in 1,800 years

Archaeologists have spent the past 17 years at the Domus del Chirurgo - House of the Surgeon - painstakingly excavating the site and compiling the world's most detailed portrait of medical treatment in Roman times

"This is the largest find of surgical instruments anywhere," said Dr Ralph Jackson

Among the 150 different implements is a rare iron tool used to extract arrowheads from wounds

other items uncovered are scalpels, scales, mortars and vases

"One of the most exciting finds was a lenticular, a small chisel used for opening the skull safely after gouging a channel into it with another instrument,"

A family doctor who lives in London's exclusive Mayfair has sparked hundreds of protests by trying to open an all-night lap-dancing club.

Dr Imtiaz Sardar, 61, is behind the plan for scantily dressed women to perform for customers at the "adult entertainment" venue.

Companies House documents reveal that Timzia, the firm bidding to run the club at the Archway Tavern in Islington, North London, is owned by Dr Sardar, his wife Talat – a doctor at the same practice – and two of their relatives.

The documents also show that the business address of Timzia – an anagram of Dr Sardar's first name – is the same as that of his surgery in affluent Crouch End, also North London.

Now NHS chiefs are investigating the doctors' involvement.

Under plans submitted to Islington Council, dancing and drinking would take place from 9am to 5am, with customers charged an extra £20 for a "sensual" table-side performance.

Israel's leading Nazi hunter is touring Europe and Latin America in an "Operation Last Chance" to put surviving wartime criminals behind bars.

Efraim Zuroff, the director of the Simon Wiesenthal Centre in Jerusalem, is demanding that justice be done - even if it is better late than never.

Dr Zuroff is offering rewards of £7,500 to anyone with information on the whereabouts of wanted individuals even though most of the world's worst Nazi war criminals live openly, shielded by complacent governments or statutes of limitations.

"Operation Last Chance really is the last round-up," said Mr Zuroff.

Highest on the list is Dr Aribert Heim, now 93, the former camp doctor of the Mauthausen death camp in Austria

One of the men is Milivoji Asner, 94, the former Nazi police chief of Croatia, who was responsible for the slaughter of Jews, gipsies and resistance fighters.

Asner is living comfortably in Austria but is terrified of deportation back to Croatia, where he faces war crimes charges.

In the middle of his seventh decade, Kent Stockton would like to hang up his stethoscope and concentrate on his poetry and cattle.

But out on the frontier of the Old West, the chances of attracting a new doctor to town appear as remote as any cowboy outpost.

"Our biggest problem is attracting young blood to step into the practice," said Dr Stockton, who lives on a 100-acre ranch in Wyoming with 60 longhorn cattle, seven horses, six dogs, three cats and one wife.

We’ve got the mountains and ski areas close by, lots of fishing and hunting and that’s what drew me here. But we haven’t been able to find anyone new here for a good many years."

Dr Stockton, 65, is

a cowboy poet of some repute.

In "Poor Ol’ Wyoming", he tells how New Yorkers are right that "we lack a lot of’ their graces" an have been "kinda blinded by wide-open spaces"

I always wanted to be a cowboy. It’s the reason I am here.

"That’s all on offer to any doctor who wants to come here. Cowboy skills not necessary – we can teach ‘em."

US doctor charged with death of autistic boy

An American doctor has been charged with causing the death of a five-year-old autistic British boy by botching a controversial chemical treatment.

Dr Roy Kerry used the wrong drug and administered it incorrectly while attempting to use chelation therapy on Abubakar Tariq Nadama, a fellow doctor has testified.

The boy went into cardiac arrest in Dr Kerry’s office in Slippery Rock, Pennsylvania, immediately after receiving the therapy, which removes heavy metals from the body, in 2005.

An autopsy showed the boy’s death was caused by a sudden drop in the calcium in his bloodstream.

Chelation is not approved by the American government for treating autism although the federal Food and Drug Administration has approved it for treating lead poisoning.

Kerry, who denies the charges, will stand trial for involuntary manslaughter.

Dr. Mary Carrasco, a pediatrician who testified for prosecutors, claimed Dr Kerry used the wrong drug and administered it incorrectly.

Tree man 'who grew roots' may be cured

An Indonesian fisherman who feared that he would be killed by tree-like growths covering his body has been given hope of recovery by an American doctor - and Vitamin A.

Dede, now 35, baffled medical experts when warty "roots" began growing out of his arms and feet after he cut his knee in a teenage accident.

The welts spread across his body unchecked and soon he was left unable to carry out everyday household tasks.

To make ends meet he even joined a local "freak show", parading in front of a paying audience alongside victims of other peculiar diseases.

But now an American dermatology expert who flew out to Dede's home village south of the capital Jakarta claims to have identified his condition, and proposed a treatment that could transform his life.

"The likelihood of having his deficiency is less than one in a million," Dr Gaspari told the Telegraph.

"I've never seen anything like this in my entire career."

Doctor Who faces Sontarans once again

A group of Doctor Who's enemies - the Sontarans - will be revived, 35 years after first appearing in the BBC drama.

The warriors will feature in an episode which will also mark the return of Freema Agyeman as Martha Jones.

She will run into the Doctor's new companion - Donna Noble, played by Catherine Tate - for the first time.

Doctor Who won top drama at the National TV Awards on Wednesday

The series, once again starring David Tennant as the Doctor, is due to be seen in the UK next spring. Filming is under way in Cardiff.

The Sontarans were first seen on The Time Warrior, an episode of the show in 1973, when Jon Pertwee was in the lead role.

And the tentacle-faced Ood will return in an episode called Planet of the Ood.
