John Adams was born on 19 October 1735 in Braintree (now Quincy), Massachusetts, the son of a farmer

From the mid-1760's, Adams increasingly began to oppose British legislation in its American colony, beginning with the Stamp Act. Despite his hostility to the British government, in 1770 he defended the British soldiers involved in the Boston Massacre. This made him unpopular but marked him out as a man of high principles

In 1778 Adams was sent Paris on a diplomatic mission. He returned there in 1780 and, in 1783, was one of the three Americans to sign the Treaty of Paris, ending the American War of Independence. Between 1785 and 1788, Adams served as the first American Ambassador to Britain

In the presidential campaign of 1796, which was the first to be contested by political parties, Adams sided with the Federalist Party and was elected President

During his presidency, Washington became the American capital

clipper's remarks: When the troops were demobilised, Voytek spent his last days at Edinburgh Zoo.
Mr Karolewski went back to see him on a couple of occasions and found he still responded to the Polish language.
"I went to Edinburgh Zoo once or twice when Voytek was there," he said.
"And as soon as I mentioned his name he would sit on his backside and shake his head wanting a cigarette. It wasn't easy to throw a cigarette to him - all the attempts I made until he eventually got one."
Local campaigner Aileen Orr would like to see a memorial created at Holyrood to the bear she says was part of both the community and the area's history.
She first heard about Voytek as a child from her grandfather, who served with the King's Own Scottish Borderers.
"I thought he had made it up to be quite honest but it was only when I got married and came here that I knew in fact he was here, Voytek was here," she said.
"It is just amazing, the story is totally amazing."

A campaign has been launched to build a permanent memorial to a bear which spent much of its life in Scotland - after fighting in World War II

Voytek

The bear - named Voytek - was adopted in the Middle East by Polish troops in 1943

The large animal even helped their armed forces to carry ammunition at the Battle of Monte Cassino

He was found wandering in the hills of Iran by Polish soldiers in 1943

They adopted him and as he grew he was trained to carry heavy mortar rounds

When Polish forces were deployed to Europe the only way to take the bear with them was to "enlist" him

So he was given a name, rank and number and took part in the Italian campaign

"He was just like a dog - nobody was scared of him," said Polish veteran Augustyn Karolewski

"He liked a cigarette, he liked a bottle of beer - he drank a bottle of beer like any man."

Voytek was a major attraction at the zoo until his death in 1963.

Hummers rule the road and 16 percent alcohol pinot noirs rule the wine ratings. Why not a beer like Stone Ruination I.P.A., so-called, the brewery proudly asserts, because of the ruinous effect of “this massive hop monster” on your palate

Munich's Oktoberfest, known locally as the "Wiesn" after its location at Theresienwiese, is back in style, both with young people and corporate sponsors

As old-fashioned and rustic as this event may seem, it is a really efficiently organized affair, a veritable Oktoberfest, Inc. Last year it attracted a record 6.5 million guests, who consumed 6.9 million liters (1.8 million gallons) of beer, 58,000 liters (15,320 gallons) of wine, close to 500,000 roast chickens and 102 oxen

Last year's beer-gulping orgy brought in €955 million ($1.35 billion). Of that, €449 million came from the festival itself, €301 million from lodging expenses for out-of-towners, and €205 million for food, shopping and transportation expenses. This year's Oktoberfest run is expected to rake in revenues of €1 billion

In recent years, the festival has discarded its traditional image and become hip once again, especially for the younger generation. Sixty percent of visitors are under 30

Motorists face zero drink drive limit

Not for one moment am I advocating drinking and driving: I won't go near a car when I've had a drink but, like many others, I enjoy a drink in the evening, and I believe that a zero limit would be a restrictive measure imposed on the mostly responsible members of society because the risk inherent in such a limit may result in many people being caught in the 'Morning after' trap even though they had only drunk a moderate amount the night before.
As for random breath testing: It already exists. The police can stop any motorist at any time and require one to take a breath test because an officer has perceived what he believes to be a driving offence on the part of the driver.

An outright ban on drinking alcohol before getting behind the wheel could be introduced as early as next year.

Ministers are looking to shake up the drink-driving laws with a zero tolerance crackdown.

It would mean motorists caught after having half a pint or one glass of wine could be charged with a criminal offence. MPs argue it would cut the 500 deaths a year caused by drink-driving.

Road safety minister Jim Fitzpatrick said

"We will be discussing whether to keep the limit as it stands or drop it, and whether to introduce random breath testing. It's difficult to assess whether you are over the limit because people's metabolisms are different."

It comes as a survey yesterday found four out of 10 motorists back a hardline approach to drink driving.

Nearly half admit they get behind the wheel after booze.

A third admitted they did not know how many units are in an average pint of beer or how this would affect their blood alcohol limit.

Pub calls time on 24-hr opening

A pub in Aberystwyth is to call time on 24-hour opening by shutting between 5am and 9am from Mondays to Fridays.

The Inn on the Pier began opening 24 hours a day six months ago, but will now only do so at weekends.

There have been complaints about late-night drinking throughout the town.

Pub manager Lee Price said it was changing hours mainly for business reasons, and police said it would help ease some of the residents' concerns.

Insp Greg Williams of Dyfed-Powys Police said Mr Price had taken positive action.

"It is hoped that this action, along with other late night licensed premises, will make a noticeable difference to the lives of the town's residents," said Insp Williams.

Aberystwyth councillor Ceredig Davies, who launched a petition last month urging council leaders and the police to curb late night "drunken idiots" in the town, said the move was a "step in the right direction".

New Guinness advert: Giant domino village

From the moment Guinness used a Toucan to promote its dark stout, the brewery's adverts have always been iconic.

Its latest and most expensive one, which will be shown tonight for the first time, is no exception.

Shot in an Argentinian mountainside village, it features a game of dominoes which escalates to include suitcases, tyres, oil drums, fridges, wardrobes and cars.

Proving that "Good Things Come to Those Who Wait", it culminates with the pages of 10,000 books flipping open to create a giant pint of Guinness.

The advert, part of a £10 million campaign, was directed by Nicolai Fuglsig, who was behind the Sony Bravia "balls" commercial.

Setting the dominoes on the table at the start of the advert took a team of three experts two days, but it took just 14 seconds to topple.

Paul Cornell, the marketing manager for Guinness, said: "The ad is fundamentally a celebration of community.

"It shows an entire village coming together to create an awe-inspiring spectacle of toppling objects."

A Cornish brewery is hoping to tempt more women to become beer tasters.

Sharp's Brewery has just completed its first series of lessons for fledgling beer tasters and is looking to recruit for the second four-week course.

Head brewer Stuart Howe runs the four-week course

The pupils will be paid in beer and the brewery's range of beers are then adjusted according to their comments.

"We are keen to attract more discerning drinkers, and in particular women, who are under-represented in the team," said head brewer Stuart Howe.

New recruits, male or female, have to pass a number of tests to qualify.

They then go on to conduct regular taste and smell tests and make comments on the quality of the beer.

"I imagined the job to be a group of guys sitting around drinking beer but we don't actually get to drink a large quantity of it," said taster Rod Kent, from Wadebridge.

"There is a lot of sipping and recording involved."
