This is another fine example. The viewer’s attention is first drawn to the figures in the foreground, then to the river in the background and only then to John the Baptist, wearing a garment of camel hair.

The painting was created when the Iconoclast raged in the Low Countries and Protestant clergymen were touring the country, stopping in places to call for Reformation. This painting may have been inspired by one such meeting.

Tags: 16thc renaissance art

<clipSource>http://www.artbible.info/art/large/357.html</clipSource>

Art of the Doomed.

clipped by: mickfinn
clipper's remarks: Many of the artists of these clipped works perished in the camps of the Nazis.

Clip Source: www.english.uiuc.edu

The Sowers by Thomas Hart Benton, 1942

Threesome (1944), by Felix Nussbaum (1904-1944)

Children as well as adults documented events of the Holocaust through art

Laufen (undated), by Josef Nassy (1904-1976), a Black expatriate

This calamity was sent ‘for Saul and for his bloody house, because he slew the Gibeonites.’ David inquired of them what satisfaction they demanded and was answered that nothing would compensate for the wrong Saul had done but the death of seven of Saul's sons. David accordingly delivered up the two sons of Rizpah and five sons of Merab, Saul's daughter. The Gibeonites put them to death and hung up their bodies at the sanctuary at Gibeah. Rizpah thereupon took her place on the rock of Gibeah, and for five months watched the suspended bodies of her children, to prevent them from being devoured by beasts and birds of prey, till they were at length taken down and buried by David."

Edited extract from 'Easton's Bible Dictionary'

<div border="2" style="margin-top: 10px; border:#000000 1px He was also the youngest faculty member ever at CIA (then known as the Cleveland School of the Arts). He founded CIA's school of industrial design, the first of its kind in the country. He also enlisted in the Navy at age 37 to help the Allies in World War II. He was flown on secret missions to Europe where he used his modeling knowledge to help improve the radar used in the Battle of the Bulge. Later he helped design prosthetics for wounded soldiers. He retired from the Naval Reserves as a Captain. Schreckengost was also good friends with Cleveland's famed safety director Eliot Ness.

Clip Source: www.cia.edu

Born the son of a commercial potter in Sebring, Ohio, Viktor Schreckengost He described the job as “like being a civil servant, except that you are naked”.

Cherie Blair sat for the painter Euan Uglow while she was a trainee barrister. When she and her husband moved into public life, Uglow judiciously decided to avoid exhibiting Striding Nude, Blue Dress. It reappeared in 2006, six years after his death. Her profile is distinguishable but the painting remains unfinished.

Kate Moss was depicted reclining naked on a bed in Lucien Freud’s Naked Portrait 2002 while she was pregnant. The sitting was arranged after the model revealed in an interview that posing for Freud was one of her few remaining ambitions.

A retired art teacher was shocked in 2003 when she found a sketch she had made decades earlier and realised it was Sean Connery, aged 22 and in a loincloth. “When he modelled there were always lots of girls in the classes,” she said.

Source: Times database (ed

Clip Source: entertainment.timesonline.co.uk

Doing nothing for a living is not as easy as it looks. That was the militant
message from Italy yesterday where artists’ nude models climbed back into
their clothes and went on strike for better pay and conditions

The protesters — male and female — said that they wanted “professional
recognition” and full-time contracts

Antonella Migliorini, 42, said that it was “a tough, cold job” posing in the
nude, often for eight hours a day. “We are not porn stars,”

However, there will always be people willing to do it, despite the poor pay.
“It can be rewarding to be immortalised as great art,” said Rachel
Campbell-Johnston

But it can also be extremely physically demanding

The professional life model emerged with the rise of formal art schools and
photography in the 19th and 20th centuries

It took a nude protest in the 1970s to
secure full-time contracts

“We need to get to the bottom of this,”

Nando Dalla Chiesa, an education ministry official, said

Tags: artist's models, posing naked

<clipSource>http://entertainment.timesonline.co.uk/tol/arts_and_entertainment/visual_arts/article3207413.ece</clipSource>

Art : R A van Haanen (1812-1894)

clipped by:
