Fabulous Rainbow Iceberg

Resembling a strange creature from the deep, this rare marbled iceberg was spotted in the waters of the Antarctic by a Norwegian sailor

Oyvind Tangen, 62, was on board the research ship G O Sars when he photographed the unusual ice formation, floating a few miles off the coast of the frozen continent

While most icebergs are white due to tiny bubbles trapped inside, which scatter the light in every direction, some pick up a multitude of colours due to various natural phenomena

Green stripes are the result of algae growing in the ice, while brown, black and yellow lines form as the ice sheets from which bergs are formed pick up layers of sediment

Deep blue lines can also appear when the air bubbles are squeezed out due to rapid melting and re-freezing of the ice.

Global warming is threatening one of the most endearing symbols of Antarctica - the penguin

Four species of penguin are facing a dual threat from loss of nesting sites and a shortage of food

The environmental conservation group WWF is warning that rising temperatures and the resulting loss of sea ice is robbing the emblematic birds of the nesting grounds they need to breed successfully

At the same time climate change and over-fishing has led to a reduction in the availability of krill - tiny crustaceans - which they rely on for food

The most vulnerable of the four species at risk is the biggest, the Emperor, renowned for the stoic male which nurses its solitary egg on its feet throughout the long Antarctic winter when temperatures can drop to almost -50ºC

The majestic Emperor has seen some of its colonies halved in size over the past half century.

There's something fishy in London, and it's not the city's trademark fish and chips

Short-snouted seahorses have set up residence in the recovering River Thames, conservationists announced today

The fish—pictured above in the London Zoo aquarium—were found in recent surveys that assessed the health of the once heavily polluted river

The discovery of the animal in brackish tidal waters as far upriver as London was kept under wraps by the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) until the species had been granted protected status

Conservationists had feared that the bizarrely shaped fish might attract unwanted attention, such as from aquarium-trade collectors

The government declared the Thames biologically dead in the 1950s, and various groups have worked to rehabilitate it for the past two decades

These efforts have led to "a vast improvement" in the Thames' water quality, Shaw said

Seals, dolphins, salmon, and sea lampreys have also been seen swimming in the healthier river

Fooled ants 'adopt' rare butterflies

Fans of Aesop know that hard-working ants are fabled targets for freeloading parasites

But a new study of the ant species Myrmica rubra shows that sometimes the tiny laborers fight back, triggering a co-evolutionary arms race that can catch related species in the crossfire

In parts of Denmark, Alcon blue butterflies lay their eggs on marsh plants (left) near M. rubra colonies. When the larvae hatch, their outer layers mimic the hydrocarbon chemistry of the ants' cuticles

The trick fools foraging ants into thinking the caterpillars are their own young, so they carry the parasites into their nests (right). The butterfly larvae are then cared for at the expense of actual ant babies

Alcon blue butterflies that best matched a colony's unique signature were the most successful at infiltrating the nests

This suggests that as the ants evolve their cuticles so that they can better recognize larval parasites, the butterflies counterattack with a more refined chemical cocktail

Led Zeppelin have given the strongest hint yet that they are planning a world tour, likely to be the biggest in the history of rock music, following the success of their one-off concert last year

Jimmy Page has said that the band are ready to reunite and prepare for a series of events as soon as they have tied-up their individual projects

Since the group performed a hugely successful reunion concert in front of 22,000 fans at London’s O2 centre in December, speculation has been mounting that an announcement of a series of world dates is imminent

Page, who is now 64, described the event as “exhilarating” and fantastic” and said that it proved that the band are ready to perform more live events

He did add that it would not be happening until next Autumn at the earliest as singer Robert Plant is touring

Since the O2 concert on December 10, sales of the group’s best of album Mothership have soared and it is now on course to become one of the biggest albums of all time.

clipper's remarks: Mary Jane Grant was born in Kingston, Jamaica in 1805. Her father was a Scottish soldier, and her mother a Jamaican. Mary learned her nursing skills from her mother, who kept a boarding house for invalid soldiers. Although technically 'free', being of mixed race, Mary and her family had few civil rights - they could not vote, hold public office or enter the professions. In 1836, Mary married Edwin Seacole but the marriage was short-lived as he died in 1844.

Seacole was taught herbal remedies and folk medicine by her mother

of a nomadic disposition, on hearing of the terrible conditions of the Crimean War and certain that her knowledge of tropical medicine would be of use, she travelled to London and volunteered as a nurse

Although an expert at dealing with cholera, her application to join Florence Nightingale's team was rejected

She then borrowed money to make the 4,000 mile journey alone

she distinguished herself, treating the wounded on the battlefield, on many occasions treating wounded soldiers from both sides while under fire

Following the cessation of hostilities in 1856 she found herself stranded and almost destitute, and was saved from penury by the Commander-in-Chief of the British Forces

Today she is noted not only for her bravery and medical skills but as "a woman who succeeded despite the racial prejudice of influential sections of Victorian society"
