mickfinn
clipper's remarks: Charles Sheeler (1883-1965) was a founder of American modernism and a master photographer of the 20thC.

Born in Philadelphia, he first studied at the Penn. Academy of Fine Arts. In 1909 he went to Paris, just when Cubism was becoming popular. Returning to the US, he realised that he would not make a living with Modernism, so he took up commercial photography, his focus on architectural subjects. He was a self-taught photographer, and learned on a $5 Brownie.

He shared a farmhouse in Doylestown, Penn., close to Philadelphia, with artist Morton Schamberg. He was so fond of the 19thC stove there that he called it his "companion" and made it a subject of his photographs (see last clip). The farmhouse serves a prominent role in many of his photographs.

He painted using a technique called Precisionist, a term that emphasised the linear precision he employed in his work. His subjects were generally things such as machinery and structures.

mickfinn
clipper's remarks: "Propaganda is neutrally defined as a systematic form of purposeful persuasion that These images have caught and held the fascination of artists, writers and musicians from the eighteenth century until the present day.

Dr Petra Kayser, Assistant Curator of Prints and Drawings at the NGV said: “Piranesi’s gothic, unconventional, and atmospheric works have long inspired famous artists including printmaker M.C. Escher, poet Edgar Allan Poe, and Fritz Lang’s film Metropolis.”

Piranesi’s first edition of prints titled Inzenzioni capric di carceri (Fanciful images of prisons), were published anonymously in 1749-50. The series is made up of 14 etchings that use the prison as a dramatic architectural setting. The prints explore darkness and light, and the opposing themes of spatial illusion and claustrophobia.

mickfinn
clipper's remarks: Vicktor Schreckengost (1906-2008) died on January 26, 2008 at age 101.
Schreckengost taught industrial design at the Cleveland Institute of Art (CIA) for more than 50 years, and was a professor emeritus at CIA until his death. He was also the youngest faculty member ever at CIA (then known as the Cleveland School of the Arts). He founded CIA's school of industrial design, the first of its kind in the country. He also enlisted in the Navy at age 37 to help the Allies in World War II. He was flown on secret missions to Europe where he used his modeling knowledge to help improve the radar used in the Battle of the Bulge. Later he helped design prosthetics for wounded soldiers. He retired from the Naval Reserves as a Captain. Schreckengost was also good friends with Cleveland's famed safety director Eliot Ness.

Clip Source: www.cia.edu

Born the son of a commercial potter in Sebring, Ohio, Viktor Schreckengost Before Hal Foster started his illustration and comics career, he held several jobs in Nova Scotia, from newspaper boy, woodchuck and hunting guide, to a stint as a gold prospector. In 1921, he finally chose to explore the fine arts, and cycled 1,000 miles from Manitoba to Chicago to study at the Chicago Art Institute, and later, at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts. Working as a successful illustrator, Foster was asked in 1928 to make 300 illustrations for the 'Tarzan' comics. Although Harold Foster hated the Tarzan character, he nevertheless agreed to do a Sunday page of 'Tarzan' when the 300 illustrations he made were enthusiastically approved.

Clip Source: www.io.com

Clip Source: www.newsfromme.com

Clip Source: madinkbeard.com

<img src="http://clipmarks.com/image_cache/abailart/512/902D9934-1FD4-4D34-845E-A9B0016FF8A5.jpg" alt="Gawain, Val, and Aleta ride by horseback through the forest, approaching a stream; (1959). Sutherland's studio was very influential in the mid-1950s, employing some of the best designers in the business. This film is no exception. Legendary stylists Eyvind Earle (Sleeping Beauty, Pigs is Pigs) and Maurice Noble (Duck Dodgers, How The Grinch Stole Christmas) collaborated on Rhapsody of Steel, and you can see evidence of both their hands everywhere in these pages. (Earle in the landscapes and textures, Noble in the bold primary and secondary colors...)

You can find many John Sutherland fIlms at Archive.org, but unfortunately not this one. Does anyone have a copy of this film on video to contribute to the ASIFA-Hollywood Animation Archive? If so, let me know. This book suffers from little tiny pictures and oceans of white space, so I've enlarged a bunch of the pictures so you can see them better.

<hr size="2" His oil paintings were frequently featured in popular magazines and books as literary illustrations, advertisements, and posters promoting the war effort. Throughout the first half of the 20th century he was a dominant presence in American illustration. At the peak of his popularity he was nicknamed the "Dean of Illustrators".

<div of Arthur Sisley

clipped by: mickfinn
clipper's remarks: Alfred Sisley (October 30, 1839 – January 29, 1899) was an English Impressionist landscape painter who lived and worked in France.

Apart from a period spent in London in 1857-61—and brief trips to England in 1874, 1881, and 1897—Sisley lived his entire life in France.

Among the Impressionists Sisley has been overshadowed by Monet, whose work his most resembles, although Sisley was less experimental, and tended to work on a smaller scale.

His concentration on landscape subjects was the most consistent of any of the Impressionists.

Sisley died in Moret-sur-Loing at the age of 59, just a few months after the death of his wife.

<div align="center" width="100%" Born in Methil in the Levenmouth area of Fife in 1951, Jack Vettriano spent the early years working in the local coal mines. His talent in painting was self taught and he only became a full time painter at the age of 37. His success has been recognised by the award of an OBE and his financial rewards have been reflected in a large rise in painting prices, many now fetching tens of thousands of pounds. Perhaps one of his most memorable images has been the Singing Butler that was sold for a record breaking price for a Scottish Artist in 2004

Clip Source: www.allhatnocattle.net

Clip Source: www.shannonsart.co.nz

Clip Source: www.worldgallery.co.uk

Clip Source: www.worldgallery.co.uk

Clip Source: www.modernmasters.co.uk

Tags: vettriano

<clipSource>http://www.painting-kingdom.com/paintings/266-Jack-Vettriano.htm</clipSource>

Guernica, Iraq and Showers of Bombs

clipped by: abailart

Clip Source: www.atimes.com

On April 27, 1937, in the midst of the Spanish Civil War (a prelude to World
War II), planes of the German Condor Legion attacked the ancient Basque town of
Guernica. They came in waves, first carpet bombing, then dropping thermite
incendiaries. It was a market day and there may have been as many as
7,000-10,000 people, including refugees, in the town which was largely
destroyed in the ensuing fire storm. More than 1,600 people may have died there
(though some estimates are lower). The Germans reputedly dropped about 45,000
kilograms of explosives on the town. In the seven decades between those two
45,000 figures lies a sad history of our age.

the major bombing story of these past
days - those 45,000 kilograms or so of explosives that US planes dropped in a
 small area south of Baghdad

The self-evident barbarism of the event - the first massively publicized
bombing of a civilian population - caused international horror

Guernica's fate
 seems almost insignificant by comparison

Tags: military barbarism, iraq, guernica

<clipSource>http://www.atimes.com/atimes/Middle_East/JB01Ak02.html</clipSource>
