The Dawn of a New Age

Flash was created in response to a need, the need to make animation on the Web a more enjoyable experience. At the dawn of the Web in those fuzzy, distant days of 1995, the only format for adding animation to a Web page was the notorious animated GIF. An animated GIF is essentially just a series of bitmap images sequenced together. The final file is large, less than spectacular in experience, and NOT interactive.

FutureWave, a small company of six people, sought to change this with a new product called FutureSplash. The following image is a screen shot from the very first release of FutureSplash.

Digitize your LP collection

Don't know what a vinyl record looks like? Then you can skip this post completely.

For those of you who have an LP collection (2,000) collecting dust in the attic, this Plug 'n' Play USB turntable can digitize those vinyl LP's so you can listen to them on your computer. The turntable includes software to edit and cleanup your digitized audio files, though a audiofile will ususually tell you that vinyl has more character, warmth and emotion than digital.We're not going to start up that debate here.

If you want to use it as a standard tunrtable it can be connected to your stereo system.

For $139 you get a felt slipmat, 45-rpm adapter, line level RCA cables, USB cable and recording software on CD-ROM. Requires Windows 98SE/Me/2000/XP or Mac OS 9+.

Ten video sharing services compared

The number of video-sharing sites has shot through the roof recently, as dozens of companies try to become the Flickr of the online video world. To this end, many video services have started offering new features like editing and remixability in an attempt to snatch a piece of the ever-expanding online video pie. But for the average user--who just wants to post a video on the 'net and share it with some friends--there are already too many options out there. All one really wants to know is, which site is going to work, with the least amount of hassle?

I took 10 of these sites out for a test drive, and picked some winners. If you want to post, watch, share, or edit video online, this post's for you.

To test each service, I uploaded my demo reel (a 15MB Sorenson 3-encoded Quicktime file) to each site and compared video quality, site interface, community features, and functionality. Where applicable I also tried to embed the resulting video in a Wordpress page. Many of these sites are still in beta, and their functionality could change in the coming months, but if you're looking to post and share video today, this is the current state of things.

How to host a website on an old computer

Introduction

Okay, so my neighbor was moving out, and she wanted to sell some stuff. I went there for some furniture, and I noticed an ancient-looking desktop lying around. I enquired, and she said "it's a very old computer - I don't think it's capable of doing anything anymore. So I'll trash it." I believed I could make it work, so I asked for it. She happily handed over the machine to me, for free!

Now I had this lovely old legacy machine! It's an Acer Aspire, manufactured around the year 1997 (about nine years old now).

It came preloaded with windows 98 Second Edition. I erased windows 98 and installed Puppy Linux on it. I wasn't able to configure the built-in httpd webserver on puppy though. So I replaced it with Damn Small Linux, which "hanged" my machine once. So I finally went back to my old friend Ubuntu, but in server mode this time. Now I operate this machine only by passing few commands on a black screen. No GUI, no role for mouse and clicks.

Many people laughed at me when I expressed my desire to host websites from this old desktop. Not even a single person agreed that this old machine can be put to good use.

And the result is this page! This page is being hosted from the same old desktop machine that you see in the pic above, and it confirms that even ancient computers are capable of hosting websites!

I'm so amazed myself, and wouldn't like it at all if such legacy machines are thrown away just because they can't handle the heavy operating systems of current times. So I'm sharing my method of hosting website on such legacy computers.

This website intends to enable anyone with a computer and an average IQ to host websites from it.

There's a new Yahoo Photos Web site in closed beta right now. By June 21, Yahoo plans to post it on photos.yahoo.com. I got access to a very buggy preview, and with Google's Picasa Web Albums fresh in my mind, took it for a spin.

Yahoo Photos is a joy to use. While not perfect, it offers a superior experience to most photo sites.

For example, the upload tool, which runs inside a browser window, allows you drag photos, or entire folders, into it. It previews your images, tells you how long it's going to take to upload them, and allows you to down-sample the images to save bandwidth.

Yahoo owns another photo site as well: Flickr, the photo sharing site favored geeks. The Flickr influence in Yahoo Photos is evident in the tagging features. Unlike Flickr, however, you can safely ignore tagging in Yahoo Photos and still have a good experience. The primary organizational mode of Yahoo Photos is albums, and selecting photos for inclusion in albums, and organizing them within albums, is extremely easy. Yahoo Photos also has a clever "Smart Album" feature, which automatically puts photos in albums when they meet certain criteria (for example, if they have specified tags).

After years of hype, wireless users in the United States are waiting for all the technology pieces to come together to make surfing the Internet from their handsets as easy as it is on their PCs at home.

So how close are we to simple and robust Web surfing from a cell phone?

The answer depends on whom you ask. Some experts say the mobile Internet is already here. Millions of people throughout the world are accessing wireless application protocol, or WAP, Web sites--stripped-down sites specially designed for mobile handsets. But other experts argue that WAP sites are too limited. Some people say an entirely new domain name, called "dot-mobi," should be used for Web sites that are optimized for mobile surfing. Still others propose using intelligent browsers to turn traditional Web sites into something that can be viewed on a small handset.

In gearing up for the Fall Video on the Net Conference, I've been exploring recent developments in both the "video on the Net" space, and what I am terming the "tv on the Net" space. It turns out that there really has been a paradigm shift in the way in which "tv", not just "video", is being delivered.

During the past twelve months, as the momentum for Broadband TV has snowballed, an increasing number of media companies have decided to take their content and make it available for viewing on the Internet. In some cases, the content offered is "re-runs" of prime time content, in other cases the Internet is being used to channel "vintage" programming (re-runs of old programs) and there is an increasing number of cases in which new content is being developed by media companies for just the broadband Internet. By default, the viewing experience is being offered to people assuming a Windows desktop. It is the mobile users (Symbian and Windows Mobile) who are most "content-viewing challenged". Some of the content owners are using variations of Flash and others are using Quicktime and Windows Media to deliver their content.
