Two researchers from Wits University believe that what they have discovered is a 60 000-year-old arrow that was fired from the earliest known bow. Their discovery has pushed back the origins of bow-and-arrow technology by 20 000 years.

The bow, probably made of wood and long since decayed, was used at a time when Neanderthals in Europe were using large spears in duels with woolly mammoths and other large prehistoric game.

The bone arrow, just 5cm long, was excavated by Wadley at the Sibudu cave, near the coastal town of Ballito in KwaZulu Natal, two years ago.

It's mystery who the people were who fashioned the arrow.

Also at this time, humankind was leaving an ever-increasing archaeological record of the first inklings of modern human behaviour. They were burying the dead, using coloured pigments and wearing jewellery.

"This at a time a few thousand years before they walked out of Africa, to become the ancestors of all humans," said Backwell.

Tags: archaeology, anthropology, south africa, prehistory, arrow, science

<clipSource>http://www.pretorianews.co.za/?fSectionId=&fArticleId=vn20080605055841569C413057</clipSource>

Roman House of Augustus Opens

clipped by: katknit
clipper's remarks: newly restored treasure

Clip Source: yourehistory.wordpress.com

Archaeology News: House of Augustus, Rome

House of Augustus opens to public

A single fragment of painted plaster, discovered in masonry-filled rooms, led the experts to unearth a series of exquisite frescoes commissioned by the man who would later become Rome’s first emperor. On Sunday following decades of painstaking restoration, the frescoes in vivid shades of blue, red and ochre went on public show for the first time since they were painted in about 30BC.

<clipSource>http://yourehistory.wordpress.com/2008/03/11/archaeology-news-house-of-augustus-rome/</clipSource>

Write Like an Egyptian

clipped by: dakotayii
clipper's remarks: enjoy

Clip Source: www.upennmuseum.com

University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology
to share with others the research done by Dr. David P. Livingston,
Ph.D. We will keep posting new materials on archaeology,
creation vs evolution, early man, ancient texts, the Flood, Exodus & Conquest.

The materials posted on this site are based
on the belief that the Bible is God's Word and is relevant today.
As Dr. Livingston encountered numerous attempts by historians,
theologians, archaeologists and scientists to discount the validity
of the Scriptures, he decided to try to meet these challenges.
He began in 1967 by trying to resolve the archaeological problems
encountered in the excavations at Jericho and Ai. To that end

This completely intact mummy is the first ever discovered at the ancient "city of the dead" known as Deir el-Banat, near the oasis of El Faiyum.

Archaeologists unearthed several intact mummies during recent excavations at the site, but none were as well preserved as this female mummy, which survived generations of grave robbers without damage.

Tags: archaeology, egypt

<clipSource>http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2008/01/photogalleries/fayoum-pictures/photo3.html</clipSource>

First Temple seal found Jerusalem

clipped by: jatfla
clipper's remarks: Cool! of the evidence that's available —documentation showing that details
of the people, places and events described in the Bible, many of them
mentioned only in passing, have been verified by archaeologists and historians.
Many excellent books have been published in recent years that verify the
dependability of Scripture, and no doubt more will follow as new discoveries
        come to light.

Does archaeology prove or disprove

December 5, 2007—Remnants of the first known surviving Roman throne have been discovered near Naples, Italy, in lava and ash that buried the city of Herculaneum in the first century, archaeologists said Tuesday.

The finding was exceptional, the scientists said, because furniture of this type was previously only known from artistic depictions, such as a painting (pictured above) from around the same time.

Two legs and part of the back of the wooden throne decorated with ivory bas-reliefs depicting ancient deities were dug out in October and November 2007, the archaeologists said.

The pieces were found 82 feet (25 meters) underground, near Herculaneum's Villa dei Papiri, a first-century country home believed to have been the residence of Julius Caesar's father-in-law.

Herculaneum, Pompeii, and Stabiae were destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius (see photos of the volcano today) that killed thousands in 79 A.D.

about the same time in the eastern Mediterranean.

The figure dates from an era that saw the first known use of the

Laden with delicacies such as stuffed dormice, peacock rissoles and sweet chestnuts, these plates and bowls would once have taken pride of place on a wealthy Roman's dining table.

Now, nearly 2,000 years later, the haul of 19 pieces of bronze tableware is offering a glimpse into life in the final days of Roman Britain.

The dishes were discovered during excavations at a building site in the City of London.

The dig has unearthed more than 1,000 artefacts so far - and archaeologists are saying it is the most important in decades.

The finds include an entire Roman street, a wooden door built 60 years after the death of Jesus and the skull of a bear probably used to entertain citizens at the nearby amphitheatre.

But the most impressive discovery is the tableware, found at the bottom of an 8ft well.

Historians believe the vessels were left there by some of the last Romans to quit the capital. One bowl had hooks to allow it to be displayed on the wall. Another could have been used for ablutions.
