These compelling, often overwhelming, feelings, emerging seemingly from nowhere, color our moods, affect our perceptions, and can alter our behavior. The mystery of this power of music is yielding to scientific investigation. Recent studies point to the interaction of two factors through which music operates: how much we like a piece, which might be expected, and the magnitude of its arousal potential, which is not.

Jesus-era date is the oldest seed to germinate

Forget cryopreservation – hot and dry conditions might be all you need to awake far into the future. A date palm seed some 2000 years old – preserved by nothing more than storage in hot and dry conditions – has germinated, making it the oldest seed in the world to do so.

The ancient seed was found along with several others in the 1960s in the Masada fortress on the edge of the Dead Sea in Israel. Recently, three were planted in soil and one germinated.

To determine their age, an Israeli and Swiss team carbon dated the two dud seeds and found them to be approximately 2000 years old – making them possible contemporaries of Jesus.

When the germinated date was 15 months old, the researchers moved it to a new pot and retrieved fragments of the seed shell so they too could be carbon dated.

You're looking at what must have been Frank Herbert's inspiration behind Dune.

Behold the Atlantic sandworm (Eulalia viridis). This creature is commonly found burrowing in the mud at low tide along the New England coastline. Herbie, the photographer and Mighty Worm Hunter (Paul Atreides would be so proud), has found specimens as large as 10". He says they make for good fish bait. And Herbie knows his fishing (that's a hint at "stay tuned for more...").

Check out those pincers (which aren't even fully extended) and think twice the next time you take off your sandals to enjoy a barefoot stroll down the shores of Cape Cod or Rhode Island.

In his book Twelve Diseases That Changed Our World, Irwin Sherman, a professor emeritus of biology at the University of CaliforniaRiverside, describes how bacteria, parasites, and viruses have swept through cities and devastated populations, felled great leaders and thinkers, and in their wake transformed politics, public health, and economies. U.S.News & World Report spoke with Sherman about how 12 key diseases—smallpox, tuberculosis, syphilis, AIDS, influenza, bubonic plague, cholera, malaria, yellow fever, two noninfectious diseases (hemophilia and porphyria), and the plant disease behind the Irish Potato Famine—have altered history.

Bubonic plague is mainly a disease in rodents and fleas (Xenopsylla cheopis).

The architectural heritage, rich and well preserved, goes from two millenia-old Roman ruins to cutting-edge contemporary monuments, including castles, chateaux, churches and cathedrals, as well as quaint traditional villages where the livestyle hasn't changed that much in the last century. The culture and national pride are as lively as the history is rich.

I lived in France for the first thirty years of my life, first in Paris, and then on the French Riviera. I have just begun to put online my collection of images of this beautiful and diverse country.
