ABC reports: Iranian protesters took to the streets today as they do every Nov. 4 to mark the 30th anniversary of the U.S. embassy takeover. But this year, opponents of the Iranian regime used the government sanctioned day of street demonstrations to challenge the hard line administration. While supporters of the regime led chants of "death to America," crowds nearby shouted "death to the dictator," a veiled reference to President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and his political ally, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

And via this video report, CNN adds the protestors had a direct message for America's president too: "You're Either With Us or With Them"

Meanwhile, somewhere on another planet, a pointy-eared man with a peculiar name had this to say about the takeover by Iranian militants of the U.S. Embassy in Tehran: "This event helped set the United States and Iran on a path of sustained suspicion, mistrust and confrontation," he said in his statement.

UPDATE: Bingley says, and probably quite rightly, that I shouldn’t use a pic of this solemn ceremony to score “cheap points,” but I believe this is Obama’s way of saying McChrystal isn’t getting his 40k troops for Afghanistan. Obama said he wasn’t interested in victory over Iran on the nuclear issue, but I think he’s not much interested in victory at all, unless it’s against his perceived domestic enemies.

Can Game Theory Predict When Iran Will Get the Bomb?

Many people wonder, but Bruce Bueno de Mesquita claims to have the answer.

Bueno de Mesquita is one of the world’s most prominent applied game theorists.

But among national-security types and corporate decision makers, he is even better known for his prognostications.

Since the early 1980s, C.I.A. officials have hired him to perform more than a thousand predictions; a study by the C.I.A., now declassified, found that Bueno de Mesquita’s predictions “hit the bull’s-eye” twice as often as its own analysts did.

At the beginning of the simulation, the positions were what you would expect. The United States and Israel and most of Europe wanted Iran to have virtually no nuclear capacity, so their preferred outcomes were close to zero. In contrast, the Iranian hard-liners were aggressive. “This is not only ‘Build a bomb,’ ” Bueno de Mesquita said, characterizing their position. “It’s probably: ‘We should test a bomb.’ ”

During the 2008campaign, Obama promised to meet with the leaders of Iran and North Korea, “without preconditions”. And while much has been made about that promise, it seems that he forgot to tell the American people that he would also be happy to meet with them without expecting any real results either ! I guess the moving goalpost disclaimer was in the fine print…

No, not a joke. The Telegraph sounds pretty sure, actually. If true, the great Jew-hater of our generation is as Jewish as Karl Marx and a lot of other such people whose parents converted out of the faith -- actually more Jewish than Marx, since Mahmoud was actually born a Jew. A close-up of the document reveals he was previously known as Sabourjian - a Jewish name meaning cloth weaver.

The Sabourjians traditionally hail from Aradan, Mr Ahmadinejad's birthplace, and the name derives from "weaver of the Sabour", the name for the Jewish Tallit shawl in Persia. The name is even on the list of reserved names for Iranian Jews compiled by Iran's Ministry of the Interior.

Mitchell could not get the Israelis to move on the settlement issue, and while Holbrooke appears to have made some headway on increasing Pakistan’s aggressiveness toward the Taliban, no fundamental shift has occurred in the Afghan war.

One of the fundamental problems dogging Israel, especially concerning short-ranged fighters and fighter-bombers, is distance. Iran's potential targets are between 950 and 1,400 miles from Israel, the far margin of the ranges Israeli fighters can reach, even with aerial refueling.

It’s gotten to the point where he can barely speak on the subject for longer than a few minutes without someone wanting to cough up the word “liar” in the background, just like Rep. Joe Wilson did last week.

Obama was at the UN this week calling for his brave new world, but in reality no one is listening … unless of course you count his bashing of Israel, a universal UN message if there ever was one. During his opening speech, Obama reminded the world that he “does not accept the legitimacy of continued Israel settlements.” Fortunately, the Israelis are starting to tune him out like everybody else. Prime Minister Netanyahu complemented the President for his “unequivocal” support for the state of Israel and completely ignored Obama’s questioning of the settlements.

Soon after Obama spoke Libyan dictator Gaddafi took the stage to blame Israel for JFK’s assassination, amongst other crazy talk. Iranian dictator Mahmoud “Bloodbath” Ahmadinejad extolled the importance of free elections - the same man who stole an election only a few months earlier and is still jailing and murdering his political opponents to this very day.

The UN Loves Barack Obama Because He Is Weak

It is natural that much of the UN will embrace an American president who declines to offer strong American leadership. A president who engages dictators like Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Hugo Chavez will naturally gain respect from the leaders of the more than 100 members of the United Nations who are currently designated as “partly free” or “not free” by respected watchdog Freedom House.

The UN is not a club of democracies - who still remain a minority within its membership " it is a vast melting pot of free societies, socialist regimes and outright tyrannies.

The latest Pew Global Attitudes Survey of international confidence in Obama’s leadership on foreign affairs shows strikingly high approval levels for the president in many parts of the world –

The Pew survey of 21 countries reveals an average level of 71 percent support for President Obama, compared to just 17 percent for George W. Bush in 2008.

It is not hard to see why a standing ovation awaits the president at Turtle Bay. Obama’s popularity at the UN boils down essentially to his willingness to downplay American global power.
