According to an Associated Press report, Russian President Vladimir Putin warned President Bush's top two Cabinet officials on Friday to back off U.S. missile defense plans for eastern Europe. Putin delivered a stern rebuff to U.S. plans to push ahead with establishing missile defense facilities in Poland and the Czech Republic.

In combative comments that took the U.S. side aback during a photo session, Putin criticized Bush's pet project and threatened to pull out of a Cold War-era treaty that limits intermediate-range missiles.

What an absolutely abysmal foreign policy; Bush, Cheney and the neocon fanatics want to put missles near the border of the Soviet Union to protect Lithuania against imaginary missles fired from Shiite and Sunni rowboats. Kind of like Russia wanting to put missles in Canada to ward off the march of the penguins. I wonder if Halliburton is making missles now.

Somehow things have gotten out of hand, negotiations break down, and bombs are deployed as the response to every question. While it is almost certainly true that Moscow's action in the Ossetian and (for good measure) the Abkhazian enclave of Georgia has been, in a real sense, the revenge for the independence of Kosovo (on Feb. 14 Vladimir Putin said publicly that Western recognition of Kosovar independence would be met by intensified Russian support for irredentism in South Ossetia), it is extremely important to bear in mind that this observation does not permit us the moral sloth of allowing any equivalence between the two dramas.

The fans of moral equivalence may or may not have noticed this, but the obviously long-meditated and coordinated Russian military intervention in Georgia comes in the same month as explicit threats to the sovereignty of Poland and Ukraine, and hard on the heels of a Russian obstruction of any U.N. action in the case of Zimbabwe.

Charles King, Russia expert and professor in the School of Foreign Service and the Department of Government at Georgetown University, in an interivew with Glenn Greenwald:

there's that exchange in the UN where the US ambassador to the UN said that Russia had intended 'regime change' in Georgia, to which the Russian ambassador replied that that was an American concept

The U.S. has no moral authority, Bush's having "looked into Putin's soul" notwithstanding.

The conflict encompasses many of the major issues that defined international politics in this region for the past decade - and likely will continue to well into the future. Those concerns include the struggle for influence between Russia and the United States; energy, with the oil pipeline running through Georgia; the promotion of democracy, and the sovereignty of small countries.

Second, it will send a very clear message to Western powers, particularly the United States, that Russia is back as the major force in this part of the world.

The bitter, brutal conflict in Georgia is far more than just another example of ethnic strife, Russian aggression or the last gasps of the Soviet Union's unraveling.

First, the invasion will weaken, if not altogether destroy, the current Georgian state and its government.

I wonder is there the slimmest of chance to see millions of exalted young people passionately marching for peace in Georgia… It shouldn't be too much of an effort. All they have to do is brush the dust off from the "not in our name", "no blood for oil", "war is not the answer", etc placards, paste Vladimir Putin’s and Dmitri Medvedev’s faces over Bush’s or Blair’s on the "worst ever", "mass murderer" and "real terrorist" placards and voila! ready to march for peace. Preferably in millions, preferably in Moscow, to ram the message through to Putin and Medvedev.

will we hear of passionate peace activists, who are determined to go and chain themselves to Georgian government buildings and other such sites to offer human shield against malicious and deliberate bombing by Russian planes on civilian targets.

A senior Russian journalist who embarrassed the country's military establishment with a series of exclusive stories has been found dead outside his flat in mysterious circumstances. The body of Ivan Safronov, 51-year-old defence correspondent for the newspaper Kommersant, was discovered on Friday. He apparently fell from a fifth-floor window.

"For some reason, it is those journalists who are disliked by the authorities who die in this country," the mass-selling daily Moskovsky Komsomolets observed yesterday. "Ivan Safronov was one of those. He knew a lot about the real situation in the army and the defence industries, and he reported it."

The New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists said in January that 13 Russian journalists had been murdered in contract-style killings since 2000, making the country the third deadliest state for journalists, after Iraq and Algeria

And what does the UN do? Nothing. Why? Because the UN is anti-American, and that makes it anti-Brit. Let's form another international organization composed of countries with elected governments that adhere to principles of economic freedom and guaranteed rights for their citizens. The UN? THE U.N. CAN'T GET ANYTHING RIGHT

The worthless United Nations continues to be useless. Iran goes into Iraqi waters and kidnaps 15 British sailors, one of them a woman, and the best they can do is to express "grave concern." Oh wow! Grave concern! I'm sure that really curled some beards in Iran. The U.N. originally intended to "deplore" the hostage-taking, but Russia objected. And here we thought that Putin was mad at Iran for not paying its bills! I guess not.

Face it. The U.N.'s response to this naked aggression shows that the organization serves no practical purpose and should be downgraded to a Sunday afternoon tea society.

The left always tells us we need the U.N. as a place for countries to settle international disputes. Tell me just one international dispute the UN has settled! It's a sounding board for third-world anti-Americanism. Nothing more.

From 1942-1945, Alexander Solzhenitsyn served as a frontline artillery captain in the Soviet Army and was twice decorated for bravery

In 1945, he was arrested for criticising Stalin in letters to a school friend, even though the Russian leader’s name had been disguised. He received a "mild sentence" of eight years in a labour camp

Solzhenitsyn's experiences in Stalin's "correctional work camps" provided much material for his future writing. In 1953, he was sentenced to internal exile in southern Kazakhstan.

In 1962, having carefully guarded his manuscripts, he succeeded in having One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich published. It described a single day in the life of a prisoner in a Soviet labour camp.

In 2007, Russian President Vladimir Putin visited the writer at his Moscow home to award him the State Prize of the Russian Federation for humanitarian achievement.

And a German diplomat says the Georgia issue should not have been brought to NATO in the first place, but instead to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, a completely toothless consultative body, and to the United Nations, where inaction is guaranteed by the Russian veto.

To their credit, the French tried to do something. Unfortunately, President Nicolas Sarkozy was snookered by Moscow. Article V of the cease-fire agreement he brokered, allowing Russia the right to "implement additional security measures" within the borders of Georgia, is a blank check for Russian occupation.

Eastern Europe understands the stakes in Georgia. It is the ultimate target. Russia's aims are clear: (1) sever South Ossetia and Abkhazia from Georgia for incorporation into Russia;

Read the first five paragraphs of the NATO statement on the Russian invasion of Georgia and you will find not a hint of who invaded whom. The statement is almost comically evenhanded.

It's not until paragraph six that NATO, a 26-nation alliance with 900 million people and nearly half of world GDP, unsheathes its mighty sword, boldly declaring "Russian military action" -- not aggression, not invasion, not even incursion, but "action" -- to be "inconsistent with its peacekeeping role."

Having launched a fearsome tautology Moscow's way, what further action does the Greatest Alliance Of All Time take? Cancels the next NATO-Russia Council meeting.

That's it. No dissolution of the G-8. No blocking of Russian entry to the World Trade Organization. No suspension of participation in the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics (15 miles from the Georgian border). No statement of support for the Saakashvili government.

Russian TV is already trumpeting "a crack in the NATO camp." More like a chasm.
