Even the most moderate Opec member, Saudi Arabia, which has indicated that it would prefer output to be left unchanged, has been cutting the discount at which it sells Arab heavy, a poor-quality crude that it uses to calm the oil price, offering large quantities at big discounts.

Oil market analysts expect Opec producers to vigorously protect the $100 a barrel price at next week’s meeting against a backdrop of rapidly falling crude prices and the strengthening dollar.

Crude oil prices are now at a five-month low and could yet fall through the $100 a barrel level, first breached at the beginning of this year.

“Continuing worries about the international economic outlook, a firmer US dollar and, possibly, market speculation that Opec may not move production levels following next week’s Opec meeting left oil prices softer,” David Moore, commodity strategist at Commonwealth Bank of Australia, said.

Predictions earlier this week that the world’s leading economies were at a standstill and that the UK could be in recession by the end of the year have heightened concerns that global demand for oil will fall back, sending prices plunging.

Venezuela has led demands for cuts but Ecuador's oil minister, Galo Chiriboga, has said that output levels should remain unchanged.

Exxon Mobil does make $1,400 a second in profits -- hear the sharp intakes of breath from liberals with pursed lips -- but pays $4,000 a second in taxes and $15,000 a second in operating costs.

Obama's rhetorical extravagances are inversely proportional to his details, as when he promises "nothing less than a complete transformation of our economy" in order to "end the age of oil." The diminished enthusiasm of some voters hitherto receptive to his appeals might have something to do with the seepage of reality from his rhetoric.

Sen. Joe Biden – Barack Obama’s eagerly anticipated running mate – should be named an honorary soldier in Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). We’re all familiar with the IRGC: Iran’s unique corps of Islamist fighters who have been directly involved in deadly attacks against U.S. soldiers in Iraq – even Afghanistan – threatening our ships in the Persian Gulf; and organizing, training, equipping, funding, and providing direct operational support to Lebanon-based Hezbollah (perhaps the most dangerous terrorist army on earth). And that’s just for starters.

Also known as the Pasdaran, the IRGC is not Iran’s conventional territorial armed force, but the military force of the Khomeinist-inspired Islamic Revolution. BUENOS AIERES, July 14 (RIA Novosti) - Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has said he will discuss plans to set up a joint Russian-Venezuelan banking venture during his visit to Moscow on July 22.

Addressing leaders of Caribbean countries at the PetroCaribe summit on Sunday, Chavez said: "the establishment of a joint bank will enhance our countries' economic and financial independence and contribute to an increase in investment, to the benefit of both nations."

Venezuela's state radio RNV said the government has already adopted amendments to laws on the Central Bank in preparation for setting up the joint venture.

Chavez also urged PetroCaribe summit participants to establish financial institutions that would be independent of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) with nations such as Russia, Belarus, China, India and Iran.

He said the time had come for "a strategic energy alliance" with these countries, and noted that Venezuela recently set up a $6 billion development fund with China.

The invasion of Georgia is, like 9/11, a defining moment — less consequential, obviously. A military response to the invasion is not an option.

While Georgia is a beacon of aspirational democracy that suffered for generations in Communist bondage, the strategic interests of the United States in the republic of Georgia are circumscribed by its location and by more direct threats to our national security elsewhere.

Still, the entire world — and the Western world in particular — has to assert every noncombat effort possible to enforce a cease-fire and to replace Russian “peacekeepers” in South Ossetia and Abkhazia with an international force. The United States and other nations cannot look away while Russia effectively annexes the two regions — not now and not two years from now.

In the initial U.S. response to the invasion, the clearly decisive leader was McCain, not Obama or President Bush.

If the Iranians "provoke us, or attack us, our army is prepared to attack and to succeed uncompromisingly," Defense Minister Ehud Barak told the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera.

She added, however, that Washington's diplomacy on Iran is well-coordinated with Israel. "They've said that diplomacy can work here," she said, referring to Jerusalem officials.

This morning, NBC aired footage of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad during which the president of Iran claimed to see “new behavior shown by the United States and the officials of the United States,” and stated “if the [American] approach changes, we will be facing a new situation, and the response by the Iranian people will be a positive one.”

Soon afterward, Pelosi appeared on NBC’s “Today Show” and said Ahmadinejad’s comments “represent an opening in terms of him saying he’ll try to find common ground.”

But taken in concert with her full-throated appreciation of the Islamic Republic’s kindly actions in Iraq, today’s sunny review necessarily raises questions about Pelosi’s fundamental assessment of the Iranian threat.

If committed by a Republican, this would be a gaffe of historic proportions. Even a Senator as inattentive to his duties as Obama certainly knows what committees he serves on. For him to fabricate the claim, out of whole cloth, that the Senate Banking Committee is "[his] committee," strikes me as another sign of Obama's megalomania. That, plus more evidence that he is totally at sea without a teleprompter.

At Powerline, John Hinderaker goes through Obama's continuing contortions (in Israel) over how Jerusalem must remain the undivided capitol of Israel, unless of course it is divided and unless of course it is also the capitol of "Palestine," which possibilities absolutely positively mark no change in the messiah's original decree, which he really really meant, that Jerusalem must remain the undivided capitol of Israel. Obama then continued
