Oil market analysts expect Opec producers to vigorously protect the $100 a
barrel price at next week’s meeting against a backdrop of rapidly falling
crude prices and the strengthening dollar.

Crude oil prices are now at a five-month low and could yet fall through the
$100 a barrel level, first breached at the beginning of this year.

“Continuing worries about the international economic outlook, a firmer US
dollar and, possibly, market speculation that Opec may not move production
levels following next week’s Opec meeting left oil prices softer,” David
Moore, commodity strategist at Commonwealth Bank of Australia, said.

Predictions earlier this week that the world’s leading economies were at a
standstill and that the UK could be in recession by the end of the year have
heightened concerns that global demand for oil will fall back, sending
prices plunging.

Venezuela has led demands
for cuts but Ecuador's oil minister, Galo Chiriboga, has said that output
levels should remain unchanged.

Tags: opec meeting in vienna, decrease production,

<clipSource>http://business.timesonline.co.uk/tol/business/industry_sectors/natural_resources/article4681261.ece</clipSource>

Only Rhetorical Extravagance by George Will

clipped by: merrie
clipper's remarks: Obama thinks government is not getting a "reasonable share" of oil companies' profits, which in 2007 were, as a percentage of revenues (8.3 percent), below those of U.S. manufacturing generally (8.9 percent). Exxon Mobil pays almost as much in corporate taxes to various governments as the bottom 50 percent of American earners pay in income taxes. Exxon Mobil does make $1,400 a second in profits -- hear the sharp intakes of breath from liberals with pursed lips -- but pays $4,000 a second in taxes and $15,000 a second in operating costs.

Obama's rhetorical extravagances are inversely proportional to his details, as when he promises "nothing less than a complete transformation of our economy" in order to "end the age of oil." The diminished enthusiasm of some voters hitherto receptive to his appeals might have something to do with the seepage of reality from his rhetoric.

Clip Source: townhall.com

One more inspirational oration, one general enough to please Berliners or even his fellow "citizens of the world," will confirm Pascal's point that "continuous eloquence wearies." That is so because it is not really eloquent.

But the fact that Obama lost nine of the final 14 primaries might have something to do with the fact that when he descends from the ether to practicalities, he reprises liberalism's most shopworn nostrums.

Russia, a third-world nation with first-world missiles, is rampant; Iran is developing a missile inventory capable of delivering nuclear weapons the development of which will not be halted by Obama's promised "aggressive personal diplomacy." Steamboats, railroads, airplanes and vaccines were "unproven" until farsighted people made investments.

George McGovern's 1972 "Demogrant" notion, Obama promises a $1,000 check for every family, financed by a "windfall profits" tax on oil companies.

Tags: obama, rhetoric, liberalism's nostrums, russia, iran's missile inventory, "windfall profits" tax on oil companies, "transform our economy"

<clipSource>http://townhall.com/Columnists/GeorgeWill/2008/08/28/only_rhetorical_extravagance?page=full</clipSource>

Joe Biden, Friend of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps

clipped by: merrie
clipper's remarks: And the IRGC and its Quds Force were both designated “supporters of terrorism” in October 2007. Though the latter two designations would not have been so had Biden had his way.

And most importantly – for the sake of sanctions and the unequivocal denial of any form of support to terrorists and terrorist supporters – the amendment said, “the United States should designate the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps as a foreign terrorist organization … and place the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps on the list of Specially Designated Global Terrorists.”

The text of the amendment included Congressional testimony from then-commander of Multi-National-Force Iraq Gen. Joe Biden – Barack Obama’s eagerly anticipated running mate – should be named an honorary soldier in Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). We’re all familiar with the IRGC: Iran’s unique corps of Islamist fighters who have been directly involved in deadly attacks against U.S. soldiers in Iraq – even Afghanistan – threatening our ships in the Persian Gulf; and organizing, training, equipping, funding, and providing direct operational support to Lebanon-based Hezbollah (perhaps the most dangerous terrorist army on earth). And that’s just for starters.

Also known as the Pasdaran, the IRGC is not Iran’s conventional territorial armed force, but the military force of the Khomeinist-inspired Islamic Revolution. The organization fields an army, a navy, and an air force, as well as an extranational special-operations force known as the Quds (Jerusalem) Force.

Iran, of course, is a “state sponsor of terrorism,” so-designated by the U.S. State Department back in 1984.

Tags: joe biden, iran's islamic revolutionary guard corpps, ouds force, state sponsor of terrorism, state department, gen. david petraeus, amb. ryan crocker

<clipSource>http://www.familysecuritymatters.org/publications/id.964/pub_detail.asp</clipSource>

The Obama-Biden Ticket

clipped by: merrie
clipper's remarks: Or Biden's call to impeach Bush if Bush bombed Iran:

Because, the right approach with Iran would be to address their "emotional needs":

Biden appears to believe that what is happening in the Muslim world is our fault. At the Tuesday-morning meeting with committee staffers, Biden launches into a stream-of-consciousness monologue about what his committee should be doing, before he finally admits the obvious: "I'm groping here." Then he hits on an idea: America needs to show the Arab world that we're not bent on its destruction. "Seems to me this would be a good time to send, no strings attached, a check for $200 million to Iran," Biden declares. He surveys the table with raised eyebrows, a How do ya like that? look on his face.

The staffers sit in silence. Finally somebody ventures a response: "I think they'd send it back." Then another aide speaks up delicately: "The thing I would worry about is that it would almost look like a publicity stunt." Still another reminds Biden that an Iranian delegation is in Moscow that very day to discuss a $300 million arms deal with Vladimir Putin that the United States has strongly condemned.

Tags: biden, 9/11, muslim world, iran, putin's arms sales to iran

<clipSource>http://atlasshrugs2000.typepad.com/atlas_shrugs/2008/08/obama-biden-lad.html</clipSource>

The End of The Fairy Tale by Ralph Peters

clipped by: merrie
clipper's remarks: Putin went to war and the American president went to a basketball game--reinforcing the Kremlin's conviction that it could do as it pleased and get away with it. French president Nicolas Sarkozy, well-intentioned and inadequate [..]

The Putin regime was perfectly willing to let Monsieur le President return to Paris with a signed piece of paper. The Russians have drawn the lesson from Western efforts to negotiate with Iran and other rogue states that Europe can be narcotized with empty agreements and nebulous promises and that Europe has become a continent of bureaucrats who much prefer paperwork to reality. And there are no penalties when the agreements prove worthless.

Clip Source: www.realclearpolitics.com

A specter is haunting Europe-the specter of Putinism. Confronted by a masterful Russian leader without living peer in brilliance or ruthlessness, the continent sorely lacks leadership and a sense of common purpose. In their muddled reactions to the Kremlin's invasion of Georgia, European states revealed a gap in perceptions that threatens to deepen: Those who suffered under the Soviet yoke sense the return of an existential threat, while those who thrived under the Pax Americana are merely annoyed at being disturbed. As Russian troops and their mercenary auxiliaries savaged a free, democratic country yearning Westward, the world got another lesson in how ineffectual Europe is in a crisis without American leadership.

The United States performed no better. In November 2001, when they were deposed by the U.S.-backed Northern Alliance, many of the Taliban fled south to Pakistan and east into Iran. This spring, they came back, intent on overthrowing the democratically elected government of President Hamid Karzi. That's when the Marines of TF 2/7 arrived "in country" to train and mentor Afghan Army and police forces.

It's been a challenging assignment for the 1300 Marines, sailors, soldiers and airmen of TF 2/7. The unit's Area of Operations (A/O) is more than 28,000 square kilometers — roughly the size of Vermont. There is only one paved highway. Overland transport to some of the fifteen forward bases and combat outposts where TF 2/7 operates often takes more than 24 hours of continuous day and night movement. Until this week — when four CH-53 transport helos and four Cobra gunships arrived, the task force had to rely on NATO aircraft...

Clip Source: greatafghanistanadventure.blogspot.com

Clip Source: www.foxnews.com

Camp Bastion, Helmand Province, Afghanistan — This British-built fortress, perched on a plateau in southwestern Afghanistan, is well named.

Addressing leaders of Caribbean countries at the PetroCaribe summit on Sunday, Chavez said: "the establishment of a joint bank will enhance our countries' economic and financial independence and contribute to an increase in investment, to the benefit of both nations."

Venezuela's state radio RNV said the government has already adopted amendments to laws on the Central Bank in preparation for setting up the joint venture.

Chavez also urged PetroCaribe summit participants to establish financial institutions that would be independent of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) with nations such as Russia, Belarus, China, India and Iran.

He said the time had come for "a strategic energy alliance" with these countries, and noted that Venezuela recently set up a $6 billion development fund with China.

Security Council, action by other official bodies and the creation of “a truly independent and neutral peacekeeping force.”

Ten days later, McCain’s first response appears to have been the right one. Obama reflected uncertainty in part because of inexperience and in part, too, because he was responding as events unfolded. He is far more comfortable, as indeed the administration’s critics are, in letting President Bush act and then declaring that he or they would have been smarter, wiser and righter had they been making the decision.

President Bush’s strongest response was to reach agreement with Poland last Thursday to base 10 interceptor missiles to protect Europe from those fired by Iran or Nort

Clip Source: www.ajc.com

The invasion of Georgia is, like 9/11, a defining moment — less consequential, obviously. She might even attempt to clarify or correct the record. A mere “‘goodwill’ was the wrong term” would have gone a long way. Yet no clarification or correction was issued. And Pelosi’s comments this morning confirm the reason: She gives Iran the benefit of the doubt.

After the kidnappings, the terrorist activities that have killed Americans over three decades, the threats to destroy Israel, the attempts to destroy Iraq, the training and support of Hezbollah, the torture and murder of thousands of Iranians,
<div border="2" style="margin-top: 10px; merrie
clipper's remarks: John explains the rest:

But Obama is not a member of the Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee. Obama just made that up so he could count the committee's action as one of "my deeds."

If committed by a Republican, this would be a gaffe of historic proportions. For him to fabricate the claim, out of whole cloth, that the Senate Banking Committee is "[his] committee," strikes me as another sign of Obama's megalomania. That, plus more evidence that he is totally at sea without a teleprompter.

Illinois Senator's Record Of Inaction Leaves Him Discredited

WASHINGTON, July 14 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The following is being
issued by the Republican National Committee:

As Chairman Of The Subcommittee
With NATO Oversight, Obama Has Failed
To Hold Any Hearings On Afghanistan:

Clip Source: corner.nationalreview.com

This guy is going to be harder than Bill Clinton to keep up with. The next whopper whips along before you have time to wrap your brain around the last one.

At Powerline, John Hinderaker goes through Obama's continuing contortions (in Israel) over how Jerusalem must remain the undivided capitol of Israel, unless of course it is divided and unless of course it is also the capitol of "Palestine," which possibilities absolutely positively mark no change in the messiah's original decree, which he really really meant, that Jerusalem must remain the undivided capitol of Israel. Obama then continued

(italics mine):

Now, in terms of knowing my commitments, you don't have to just look at my words, you can look at my deeds.
