At a Hillary Clinton fund-raiser in New York last month, Warren Buffett, no stranger to wealth, told an audience filled with bankers and real-estate developers the system was, in effect, rigged. "This is what Congress in its wisdom did: the 400 of us [here] pay a lower part of our income in taxes than our receptionists do, or our cleaning ladies, for that matter." Buffett (who is a director of NEWSWEEK's parent, The Washington Post Company) offered a million dollars to any fellow magnate who could prove he had higher tax rates than his secretary.

Tags: warren buffett, income, taxes, wealth, equities

<clipSource>http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/19762041/site/newsweek/</clipSource>

Blackwater: The Christian Right's Private Army

clipped by: kmcolo
clipper's remarks: The shock troops of Armageddon

Clip Source: www.pbs.org

The thing is, Obama and Hillary have tons of cash to run "real" political campaigns with slick TV spots and so on. They're taking the free route not to save cash but to reach YOU instead of the oldsters who watch the nightly news. If you're online, you're engaged, and politicians dig that.

Step 2: Keep a blog, but make it good. Perhaps a return to decency and a little old fashion modesty is in order?

Clip Source: www.townhall.com

The American Psychological Association has discovered that too early sexualization of children, particularly girls, is damaging. How about that? Because I have well-developed views on this subject, I almost didn't read the long article about it in the Health section of The Washington Post this week. But I'm glad I did because just when you think you're up to date on cultural decline, you are surprised.

Here is reporter Stacy Weiner on the state of preteen fashion: "Ten-year-old girls can slide their low cut jeans over 'eye-candy' panties. French maid costumes, garter belt included, are available in preteen sizes. . . . And it's not unusual for girls under 12 to sing, 'Don't cha wish your girlfriend was hot like me?'" As Nora Ephron memorably put it in another context, "No matter how cynical I get, I just can't keep up."

The Post article and the APA report focus on the increasing rates of eating disorders, depression and low self-esteem among younger and younger girls. Children's National Medical Center in Washington, D.C., for example, is now seeing patients as young as 6 with eating disorders. Girls are worrying about their weight and expressing dissatisfaction with their bodies at younger ages.

Tags: sex, modesty, pop culture, attire, feminism, adolesence, puberty

<clipSource>http://www.townhall.com/columnists/MonaCharen/2007/02/23/sexualizing_girls</clipSource>

Conservative Paper Drops Ann Coulter

clipped by: BobbyRutan
clipper's remarks: Our community is largely conservative and Republican. That is no doubt an interesting fact that can be interpreted in a few different ways. But putting that aside, i think the facts that matter most are those in this clip.

These come from a comment by debbyski and i think they represent the reasons people will or won't support her.

I would certainly be shocked if anyone who voted for Hillary would support Palin based on these specific differences in beliefs and policies. But as our generation grows older and enters public life -- thankfully, we have some time -- we'll find ourselves in a political culture that increasingly views these "gotcha" moments in context and with an eye toward forgiveness. After all, the incriminating photo, the offensive blog post, that drunken 3 a.m. e-mail -- it could have been any of us."

Clip Source: www.latimes.com

Imagine if the current crop of public figures had grown up during the Facebook era. We might have photos of John McCain in Florida slurping body shots off his stripper girlfriend. Barack Obama rolling a joint on a beach in Hawaii. George W. Bush passed out at a Yale frat party, 40-ounce beer bottles duct-taped to his hands. Hillary Rodham Clinton at a Wellesley peace rally, locking lips with her husband's future secretary of Labor, Robert Reich.

It's one thing to hear that your elected representative had a wild time in college. It's entirely different to have pictorial proof. Would you still vote for someone after viewing a photograph of him passed out in his own vomit?

This isn't just a thought experiment. The next generation of political leaders is coming of age right now -- and it's unlikely that any one of them will escape digital documentation of their college-era foibles.

<clipSource>http://www.latimes.com/news/opinion/la-oe-savage14-2008jul14,0,7315894.story?track=ntothtml</clipSource>
