The very rich in America pay taxes at a lower rate than most working people, and, due to a wrinkle in the tax code, private-equity partners enjoy some of the lowest tax rates of all. At a Hillary Clinton fund-raiser in New York last month, Warren Buffett, no stranger to wealth, told an audience filled with bankers and real-estate developers the system was, in effect, rigged. "This is what Congress in its wisdom did: the 400 of us [here] pay a lower part of our income in taxes than our receptionists do, or our cleaning ladies, for that matter." Buffett (who is a director of NEWSWEEK's parent, The Washington Post Company) offered a million dollars to any fellow magnate who could prove he had higher tax rates than his secretary.

You could not miss Erik Prince this week. The founder and top gun of Blackwater usually keeps a low media profile. But there he was all over the place, in a carefully orchestrated campaign to put the best face on a bad situation.

General Petraeus himself has been guarded by private contractors in Iraq.

it sends a message that the United States military is essentially a subservient player to a corporate army in Iraq.

When Hillary Clinton's husband was in the White House, he was an aggressive supporter of the privatization of the war machine.

what I think is more interesting is Erik Prince's connection to radical religious right organizations.

I believe that Erik Prince is an ideological foot soldier. And I do believe that he's a Christian supremacist.

I believe that these men do have an agenda that very closely reflects adherence to a sort of Crusader doctrine.

Whether you are running for president or looking for a clerical job, you cannot afford to get angry if you are a woman, Yale University psychologist Victoria Brescoll has found.

Brescoll and Eric Uhlmann at Northwestern University recently completed three separate studies to explore a phenomenon that may be all-too-familiar to women like New York Senator Hillary Clinton: People accept and even reward men who get angry but view women who lose their temper as less competent

The studies, published in the March issue of Psychological Science, provide women with recommendations for navigating emotional hazards of the workplace. Brescoll says it pays to stay emotionally neutral and, if you can't, at least explain what ticked you off in the first place.

"An angry woman loses status, no matter what her position,'' said Brescoll, who worked in Clinton's office as a Congressional Fellow in 2004 while she was preparing her doctoral thesis on gender bias.

According to Slate's Delegate Calculator, Clinton would need 80 percent of every remaining vote to catch up with Obama on pledged delegates. There's no chance anyone inside the Clinton campaign believes that is going to happen.

When Hillary started falling behind in primary delegates, her campaign emphasized her lead in superdelegates

They gave that up when superdelegates started drifting Obama's way

Then the Clinton campaign started arguing that you can't nominate

someone who lacks a popular-vote majority

They're starting to give that up because Clinton now has little chance of surpassing Obama in the popular vote. (That's just as well, because

the caucuses screw up popular-vote counts as a reliable measure of candidate support.

This isn't arithmecracy. It's arithmetic idolatry—the worship of irrelevant numbers

Does that mean the end of her campaign is near? I'm beginning to suspect so. Hand me that slide rule …

I mean does it really require society to tell us what is wrong with our families? DADS must someone else tell you what is appropriate behavior for your sons and daughters?

As long as there is pop culture and idols are made of television stars our young people will be tempted to look like what they see on TV and in the movies. Perhaps a return to decency and a little old fashion modesty is in order?

The American Psychological Association has discovered that too early sexualization of children, particularly girls, is damaging. How about that? Because I have well-developed views on this subject, I almost didn't read the long article about it in the Health section of The Washington Post this week. But I'm glad I did because just when you think you're up to date on cultural decline, you are surprised.

Here is reporter Stacy Weiner on the state of preteen fashion: "Ten-year-old girls can slide their low cut jeans over 'eye-candy' panties. French maid costumes, garter belt included, are available in preteen sizes. . . . And it's not unusual for girls under 12 to sing, 'Don't cha wish your girlfriend was hot like me?'" As Nora Ephron memorably put it in another context, "No matter how cynical I get, I just can't keep up."

The Post article and the APA report focus on the increasing rates of eating disorders, depression and low self-esteem among younger and younger girls. Children's National Medical Center in Washington, D.C., for example, is now seeing patients as young as 6 with eating disorders. Girls are worrying about their weight and expressing dissatisfaction with their bodies at younger ages.

Imagine if the current crop of public figures had grown up during the Facebook era. We might have photos of John McCain in Florida slurping body shots off his stripper girlfriend. Barack Obama rolling a joint on a beach in Hawaii. George W. Bush passed out at a Yale frat party, 40-ounce beer bottles duct-taped to his hands. Hillary Rodham Clinton at a Wellesley peace rally, locking lips with her husband's future secretary of Labor, Robert Reich.

It's one thing to hear that your elected representative had a wild time in college. It's entirely different to have pictorial proof. Would you still vote for someone after viewing a photograph of him passed out in his own vomit?

This isn't just a thought experiment. The next generation of political leaders is coming of age right now -- and it's unlikely that any one of them will escape digital documentation of their college-era foibles.

You may not be devoted to Halle Berry, but at least oneof your brain cells is. Christof Koch, a neuroscientist at Caltech, and Itzhak Fried, a neurosurgeon at the University of California at Los Angeles, revealed this spring that their research team had discovered individual brain cells that fire in response to particular people and places. A Bill Clinton neuron lights up at photos of the former president, but not for other ex-presidents, males—or Hillary.

Such faithful neurons conflict with the conventional wisdom—a single cell is not supposed to know so much. With almost as many neurons in the neocortex as stars in the galaxy, there still aren't enough for every possible input, and the researchers suspect that brain cells get reserved only for important people—like Bart Simpson. Venezuelans have not lost civil liberties the way people in the US or the UK have in recent years, and ordinary citizens continue to have more say in their government, and share more in its oil wealth, than ever before. It is doubtful that the referendum will reverse these changes, regardless of the outcome.

He does seem to be trying to give the poor some healthcare and some hope. 'How about you?'

the mainstream media generally abandons quaint notions of balance and objectivity when reporting on Venezuela

this often extends to left-of-centre newspapers not known to slavishly follow the Bush administration's lead when reporting on other oil states where regime change is either sought, Iran, or in process, Iraq

President Lula da Silva of Brazil defended Venezuela last week, asking why "people did not complain when Margaret Thatcher spent so many years in power"

"You can invent anything you want to criticise Chavez, but not for lack of democracy." Lula has repeatedly defended Venezuela's government as democratic, but these comments are never reported in the English language media

if Hillary Clinton is elected next year, we will have Bushes and Clintons as heads of state for a full consecutive 24 years

Chavez is also castigated for proposing to get rid of the independence of the Central Bank

there are sound economic reasons for this amendment.

Push this listening thing. Even for a day. When asked for your opinion, say, "I don't know." You'll baffle people, sure, but maybe that's a good thing. You can be the Quiet Man. Let them try to figure you out.

I'll add: at the same time, don't be mysterious to the point of inscrutability. Share your thoughts when appropriate. If you've practiced listening to others, you'll have reserves of knowledge and experience to draw upon, which tends to compel people to listen to you in turn.

Somewhere along the line, someone decided we could all be experts. On everything. The market. The Yankees. The Euro. Dick Cheney. Reverse circumcision. There's a lot to talk about these days. And everybody is more than willing to tell you how they've got it figured.

And you? You're a problem solver. People come to you. They want to hear what you think. But if you don't shut up once in a while, you'll just become part of the white noise of opinion, and opinion is cheap these days. You need to learn how to listen.

Make it a point to treat the people you run into like literary characters. Assume they have dignity. Ask questions at points where you'd usually weigh in. Look them in the eye, and let them have the last word on Hillary Clinton. When you feel you may be able to trump someone on the subject of off-season free-agent acquisitions, don't.

In recent years, Pakistan has been the home of banks that wired money for the 9/11 plot, been the chief source of illicit nuclear proliferation, offered a tribal-area haven for planners of worldwide terrorism, abetted the reconstitution of the Taliban and educated many a suicide bomber in Islamic religious schools.

At the same time, President Pervez Musharraf, in power since a 1999 coup, has received about $10 billion in U.S. aid, much of it to reinforce the Pakistani military in fighting Al Qaeda, the Taliban and global jihadism in South Waziristan and other tribal areas.

If a U.S. policy was ever broken, this is it.

It’s not clear who killed Bhutto, although hers was a chronicle of a death foretold.

t’s suspicious that both the crime scene and Bhutto’s car were cleaned up before investigators had access. Senator Hillary Clinton’s call for an international inquiry is a good one.
