She might even attempt to clarify or correct the record. A mere “‘goodwill’ was the wrong term” would have gone a long way. Yet no clarification or correction was issued. And Pelosi’s comments this morning confirm the reason: She gives Iran the benefit of the doubt.

After the kidnappings, the terrorist activities that have killed Americans over three decades, the threats to destroy Israel, the attempts to destroy Iraq, the training and support of Hezbollah, the torture and murder of thousands of Iranians,

Clip Source: www.commentarymagazine.com

For all appearances, Nancy Pelosi is establishing herself as a bona fide advocate of Iran’s terrorist regime.

This morning, NBC aired footage of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad during which the president of Iran claimed to see “new behavior shown by the United States and the officials of the United States,” and stated “if the [American] approach changes, we will be facing a new situation, and the response by the Iranian people will be a positive one.”

Soon afterward, Pelosi appeared on NBC’s “Today Show” and said Ahmadinejad’s comments “represent an opening in terms of him saying he’ll try to find common ground.”

But taken in concert with her full-throated appreciation of the Islamic Republic’s kindly actions in Iraq, today’s sunny review necessarily raises questions about Pelosi’s fundamental assessment of the Iranian threat.

In May, Pelosi told a group of reporters from the San Francisco Chronicle that “some of the success of the surge is at the goodwill of the Iranians-they decided in Basra

Tags: ahmadinejad, nancy pelosi, nbc's "today show', san francisco chronicle, surge, al-qaeda, iranians goodwill, basra

<clipSource>http://www.commentarymagazine.com/blogs/index.php/greenwald/18201</clipSource>

Now Bush Is Appeasing Iran

clipped by: merrie
clipper's remarks: joined envoys from France, Britain, Russia, China and Germany in talks with Saeed Jalili -- Iran's nuclear negotiator and an Ahmadinejad confidant -- about incentives to give to Tehran.

[E]ven with record oil prices, mismanagement has driven the Iranian economy into the ground. On July 14, the Ministry of Housing reported an "historical" 125% rise in housing prices. The same day, Tabnak, a news Web site run by a former head of the IRGC, admitted foodstuff inflation had reached 50% annually. On July 8, 2008, a National Iranian Oil Company executive acknowledged in the Iranian press that, without significant investment in infrastructure, Iranian oil production would decline each year by 300,000 barrels a day.

In the past month alone, Iranian workers have struck for unpaid wages at the Khodro automotive plant (which assembles Peugeots), the Alburz Tire Company, and the Haft Tapeh Sugar Cane factory.

Clip Source: www.meforum.org

On May 31, 2006, Condoleezza Rice drew a red line in front of Tehran's nuclear enrichment program. "The Iranian government's choices are clear," she said. "The negative choice is for the regime to maintain its current course. . . . If the regime does so, it will incur only great costs." She also offered an olive branch: "As soon as Iran fully and verifiably suspends its enrichment and reprocessing activities, the United States will come to the table with our EU-3 colleagues and meet with Iran's representatives."

Two years later, Iranian officials have installed more than 3,000 centrifuges in a facility designed to hold 50,000. On July 9, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) tested missiles which could reach Israel; the same day, Iranian Web sites carried President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's pledge to launch a satellite, an event that would demonstrate a mastery of intercontinental ballistic missile technology.

Nevertheless, just 10 days later, Undersecretary of State William Burns

Tags: u.n. security council resolutions, tehran's nuclear program, centrifuges, missiles test, satellite launch

<clipSource>http://www.meforum.org/article/1933</clipSource>

Suicidal Mystics With Nukes

clipped by: merrie
clipper's remarks:
After more UN sanctions were threatened, Ahmadinejad stated:

As God promised, the oppressors will have their noses rubbed in the dirt. Now they are fulfilling this promise by themselves... Let it be known that in whatever we do, I see the hand of God and the hidden imam at every moment.

The expansion [of the city of Qom] is driven by an apocalyptic vision: that Shiite Islam's long-hidden 12th Imam, or Mahdi, will soon emerge -- possibly at the mosque of Jamkaran -- to inaugurate the end of the world. The man who provided $20 million to prepare the shrine for that moment, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, has reportedly told his cabinet that he expects the Mahdi to arrive within the next two years.

Clip Source: directorblue.blogspot.com

According to 'Twelver' Shi'a Mulims, Imam Hujjat al-Mahdī ( المهدى) is the twelfth Imam and the Mahdi, the ultimate savior of mankind. Twelver Shi'as believe that Muhammad was born in 868 and has been hidden by God (referred to as occultation) to later emerge to fulfill his mission.

Twelver Shi'as cite various references from the Qur'an and reports (Hadith) from Muhammad and the twelve Shi'a Imams. These texts predict the reappearance of Muhammad al-Mahdi which would, in accordance with God's command, bring justice and peace to the world by establishing Islam throughout the world.

Shi'as believe that Muhammad al-Mahdi will reappear when the world has fallen into chaos and civil war emerges between the human race for no reason.

As mayor of Tehran, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is reported to have ordered the city council to build a boulevard to prepare for the Mahdi. The aircraft traversed more than 900 miles, about the distance from Israel to Iran's Natanz nuclear enrichment facility; the exercise also tested the refueling of planes and helicopters tasked with rescuing downed pilots.

El Baradei wasn't pleased.

He warned that any attack on Iran would turn the entire Middle East "into a fireball."

Russia's response: as Iran's preeminent nuclear technology supplier, Russia is concerned with its cash flow. It also warned Israel not to attack. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov instructed Israel not to use force, claiming there is no proof Iran is trying to acquire atomic weapons.

Clip Source: directorblue.blogspot.com

Tags: iaea, el baradei, ahmadinejad, russia, stratfor, john bolton

<clipSource>http://directorblue.blogspot.com/2008/06/news-digest-israeli-dry-run-on-irans.html</clipSource>

Iran Supplying Equipment To Taliban To Fight British

clipped by: merrie
clipper's remarks: Evidence found by UK special forces is understood to concern the supply of the same bomb-making equipment Iran provides to insurgents in Iraq, namely components for explosively formed projectiles, or EFPs.

It is not clear whether the bomb that last week killed four British SAS reservists in Helmand province was such a device, although British military commanders fear that increasing Iranian involvement in Afghanistan may render irrelevant attempts to increase the number of armoured vehicles in the conflict. Yesterday four coalition soldiers were killed by a bomb in the province of Kandahar.

Meanwhile, as investigations continue into the use of Snatch Land Rovers in southern Afghanistan in which the four UK troops died last week, new figures obtained by The Observer reveal that more than 700 armoured vehicles that could be deployed to protect British personnel in Helmand are out of action.

Clip Source: www.guardian.co.uk

British special forces operating on the border between Afghanistan and Iran have uncovered fresh evidence that Tehran is actively backing insurgents fighting UK troops.

Documented proof that Iran is supplying the Taliban with devastating roadside bomb-making equipment has been passed by British officials to Tehran, prompting fears that the war in Afghanistan may escalate into a regional armed conflict.

Days after Prime Minister Gordon Brown warned President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad that Britain would freeze the assets of Iran's largest bank to discourage Tehran from developing nuclear weapons, Whitehall sources revealed that they had forwarded 'documentation' that the Iranian authorities were supplying enemy forces in Afghanistan.

Nato spokesman James Appathurai echoed concerns that elements in Iran are providing support to insurgents fighting British troops. Barack Obama doesn't want voters to see him as soft on Iran and its genocidal President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

The Iranians "understand - sometimes, it seems, better than a lot of Americans do - that if American power collapses in Iraq, if we abandon our allies" then "our position throughout the region will become much weaker and Iran's position much stronger," Lieberman added. The Senate - including well over half of the Democrats - voted for the amendment, which passed 76-22. Obama, who was absent, said he opposed the amendment because it could be used as pretext to invade Iran. Obama denounced Kyl-Lieberman as "reckless" and criticized his chief rival, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, for supporting it.

However tough he tries to sound when talking to AIPAC, Barack Obama's real sympathies are with the George Soros/MoveOn.org wing of the Democrat Party.

Clip Source: www.aim.org

On September 26, 2007, Sens.
Jon Kyl, Arizona Republican, and Joseph Lieberman, Connecticut
Independent Democrat, introduced a nonbinding amendment to the defense
authorization designating the IRGC a terrorist group because of its
role in killing American soldiers. "The consequences of this Iranian
terrorism in Iraq have been immense and terrible for our men and women
in uniform and for their families and friends at home," Lieberman said
in explaining the need for the amendment. "According to LTG Ray
Odierno, the deputy commander of our forces in Iraq, Iranian-supplied
weapons were responsible for a full one-third of American combat deaths
[in July 2007].That builds on a similar record in preceding months. Let
me repeat that: Up to a third of the deaths of American soldiers in
Iraq in July were caused by sophisticated explosive devices used by
people trained in Iran, with those devices supplied by Iran. That means
the Iranians and their agents are killing our troops."

Tags: aipac, joseph lieberman, jon kyl, irgc, designated terrorist group, george soros, moveon.org, obama

<clipSource>http://www.aim.org/guest-column/obama-and-iran-the-democrats-select-a-modern-day-mcgovern/</clipSource>

More Insanity From Columbia University

clipped by: merrie
clipper's remarks: When Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad visited Columbia last fall and made a similar claim ("In Iran, we don't have homosexuals like in your country."), students laughed and booed. They recently, however, elected to award Massad the Lionel Trilling Book Award for making the nearly identical claim. Last year, Marty Peretz reported some good news: Columbia University had declined to give Massad tenure. Apparently, Peretz spoke too soon. After cries from the Middle Eastern Studies Department, the Provost agreed to appoint a second ad hoc committee this year. Will Columbia have the good-sense to banish him once and for all?

Clip Source: www.weeklystandard.com

Columbia University has more than its share of intellectual hacks, and high on the list is Joseph Massad. Professor Massad's controversial beliefs invite mockery. He believes the Iraq war stemmed from the sexual prowess of the American male ("In such a strategy, Iraqis are posited by American super-masculine fighter-bomber pilots as women and feminised men to be penetrated by the missiles and bombs ejected from American warplanes."); he condones terrorism against Israel ("This can be done by the continuing resistance of Palestinians in Israel and the Occupied Territories to all the civil and military institutions that uphold Jewish supremacy"); and lastly, he attempted to exile a student from his class who had the gall to disagree with him.

In Desiring Arabs, Massad asserts that the West "produces homosexuals as well as gays and lesbians, where they do not exist." But for colonialism, Massad contends, there would be no gay people in the Middle East

Tags: columbia university, professor massad, "desiring arabs", ahmadinejad, gays and lesbians, middle east

<clipSource>http://www.weeklystandard.com/weblogs/TWSFP/</clipSource>

Scandal As Ahmadinejad's Ally Makes Accusations Of Corruption

clipped by: merrie
clipper's remarks: Professor Gary Sick, an Iran expert at Columbia University in New York, said that commentators were mistakenly writing off Mr Ahmadinejad in next year’s presidential elections. “He is a ferocious competitor, an edgy populist who wins the hearts of his lumpen proletariat countrymen even while he is demolishing the economy, and a supremely ambitious politician who is a threat to the entire post-revolutionary establishment,” Prof Sick told The Times.

Clip Source: www.timesonline.co.uk

A close ally of President Ahmadinejad has accused 44 leading members of the
Iran’s old guard of corruption, among them several prominent ayatollahs.

The incendiary “disclosures” were made by Abbas Palizar, a member of a
parliamentary investigative committee into corruption. In a speech to
students at Hamedan University in western Iran this month, he denounced the
country’s judiciary as the “centre of economic corruption”

Some analysts see the allegations as an implicit challenge to Ayatollah Ali
Khamenei, Iran’s Supreme Leader. Others believe Mr Ahmadinejad would not
dare embarrass Ayatollah Khamenei, who they suspect has allowed the debate
to go public in order to play rival wings in the conservative camp against
each other.

He is reviving that challenge to the old elite and its vested interests now as
his conservative rivals attack his mishandling of the economy: inflation and
unemployment are soaring.

And these are guys he's known for 20 years.

"I face this challenge with profound humility and knowledge of my own limitations. But I also face it with limitless faith in the capacity of the American people … . I am absolutely certain that generations from now, we will be able to look back and tell our children that this was the moment when we........

It's a good thing he's facing it with "profound humility," isn't it? Because otherwise who knows what he'd be saying. But mark it in your calendars: June 3, 2008 – the long-awaited day, after 232 years, that America began to provide care for the sick.

Clip Source: www.ocregister.com

Speaking personally, I don't want to remake America. I'm an immigrant, and one reason I came here is because most of the rest of the Western world remade itself along the lines Sen. Obama has in mind. This is pretty much the end of the line for me. If he remakes America, there's nowhere for me to go – although presumably once he's lowered sea levels around the planet there should be a few new atolls popping up here and there.

Nothing in Obama's resume suggests he's the man to remake America and heal the planet.

Yet at the same time as he's being stunned by the corruption and anti-Americanism of those closest to him, Obama's convinced that just by jetting into Tehran and Pyongyang he can get to know America's enemies and persuade them to hew to the straight and narrow. No doubt if it all goes belly-up, and Iran winds up nuking Tel Aviv, President Obama will put on his more-in-sorrow-than-in-anger face and announce solemnly that "this isn't the Mahmoud Ahmadinejad I knew."

Tags: mark steyn, obama, corrupt, anti-american, rezko, ahmadinejad, tel aviv

<clipSource>http://www.ocregister.com/articles/obama-speech-remake-2061941-sen-great</clipSource>

Personal Carbon Ration Card For Every Citizen

clipped by: merrie
clipper's remarks: of tar-and-feathering anyone who dares question climate alarmism -- a key tactic in their effort to dupe the nation into consuming the green Kool-Aid.

One event is an indisputable historical fact of hideous dimensions; the prophesied specter of catastrophic global warming, however, is just a politically driven fear scenario based on unreliable computer models and the wishful bending of the laws of climate physics.

There is no comparison.

Can anyone reasonably equate, say, the 31,000 U.S. scientists, engineers and physicians who recently signed a petition against global warming alarmism -- including Princeton theoretical physicist Freeman Dyson and Massachusetts Institute of Technology climatologist Richard Lindzen -- with the likes of neo-Nazis and Iranian leader Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who constantly calls for Israel's destruction?

But Krauthammer's adoption of the greens' most effective word weaponry nonetheless plays into their thought-shaping rhetoric.

Clip Source: www.junkscience.com

In Charles Krauthammer's May 30 must-read column, "Carbon

Responding to a question about Obama's shifting position on Jerusalem at today's presser in the Everglades:

I can’t react to every comment that Senator Obama makes, cause it probably will change. As it did on sitting down and talking with unconditionally with Ahmadinejad and other dictators. But the point is, Israel—Jerusalem is undivided. Jerusalem is the capitol. And we should move our embassy to Jerusalem before anything else happens. The subject of Jerusalem itself will be addressed in negotiations by the Israeli government and people.

Just to recap, speaking at Aipac on Wednesday, Barack Obama said:

Jerusalem will remain the capital of Israel, and it must remain undivided.

The next day Obama told CNN:

Well, obviously, it's going to be up to the parties to negotiate a range of these issues. And Jerusalem will be part of those negotiations.

This sort of discrepancy typically occurs when capital flight is disguised as imports through fraudulent invoices and similar devices. A small current-account deficit would be of little concern for a nation with normal access to world capital markets, but Iran is unable to borrow.

There is indeed massive capital flight. As I wrote a couple of years ago, Gulf bankers told me that they can’t handle all the money pouring out of Iran. Wealthy Persians long since saw the doom of the Islamic Republic, and have been looting the country’s resources for their own gain.

They are printing money, further pauperizing Iranian workers–who are famously paid very late, if at all, as demonstrated by the ongoing demonstrations and strikes at government-owned companies–

The message Spengler delivers is that there is no way out of this war. Left to their own devices, the mullahs will destroy Iran, and, if they can, us as well.

Clip Source: pajamasmedia.com

I’m a big fan of “Spengler,” the elegant and cultured columnist for “Asia Times.” He’s just come out with a new think piece on Iran, which comes to the right conclusion (that is, the same one I have)

His central theme is that the Iranian economy is a basket case, that the country is facing hyperinflation, that there is a great lack of public confidence in the regime, and that the mullahs will (quite soon) have to choose between a Gorbachev-style surrender, or war. He thinks they have already chosen war. And he doesn’t think we can offer them anything that will produce Iran’s “giving up its nuclear ambitions and kenneling its puppies of war.”

He is certainly right about the economic diagnosis, which I have discussed at great length in “The Iranian Time Bomb.” He considers the very real possibility that Iran is running a current account deficit right now, despite the extraordinary runup in oil prices:

President Mahmud Ahmadinejad denied a report that Iran’s imports now exceed $60 billion,

Tags: ahmadinejad, mullahs, hyperinflation, funding terror, arming shi’ites, economic degradation

<clipSource>http://pajamasmedia.com/michaelledeen/2008/05/26/why-the-mullahs-will-keep-on-fighting-us-and-destroying-iran/</clipSource>

Would This Prompt An "Unconditional Meeting"?

clipped by: merrie
clipper's remarks: In yet another New York Times advocacy piece for Barack Obama, we discover that the Obama campaign is trying to rewrite history again.

The problem is, Barack Obama did say he’d meet with Iran unconditionally, in front of a lot of people, at the CNN/YouTube Democratic debate last July.

He was specifically and directly asked if he would meet with the leader of Iran (and the leaders of several other “so-called rogue states”) without preconditions, in the first year of his presidency, and his answer was, “I would.”

Democratic Debate Transcript, CNN/YouTube - Council on Foreign Relations.

http://littlegreenfootballs.com/article/29896_Obama_Changes_His_Unconditional_Position

Clip Source: www.townhall.com

Tags: ahmadinejad, us embassy, day 444, jimmy carter

<clipSource>http://www.townhall.com/funnies/cartoonist/MichaelRamirez/2008/05/2/</clipSource>
