Couric: I asked for one.

Obama: I'm a movie guy. I can rattle off a bunch of movies. But that Casablanca, you know.

That's Obama. He's glib, conventional, won't make a real choice, shows nothing about himself, and says nothing offputting and says nothing impressive.

Neither of the two men who have been nominated by their parties for president is perfect for this challenging moment. But one is far less imperfect than the other.

One is an orthodox and timid liberal, personally ambitious but intellectually conventional. For all his talk of hope and change, when has Barack Obama ever shown a willingness to break with liberal orthodoxy or Democratic dogma? What bold decision has he taken, what unpopular idea has he embraced? The odd truth about Obama is that, for all his unsavory radical associations--and they are unsavory and a legitimate issue in the campaign--he's not radical enough for the times and challenges we face.

The other candidate, John McCain,

His general views are centrist, but he's willing to be bold when necessary. He won't be passive as president, and he'll think anew and act anew as he adjusts to the challenges we face, in the spirit of doing what's necessary to preserve and strengthen the underlying principles of American life.

Obama is clearly lying when he claims ignorance about Ayers's terrorism, but even if you wanted to pretend otherwise, it is impossible that he was in the dark about Ayers's revolutionary leftism: Ayers has never made a secret of it and can't seem to help himself from mentioning it about every 30 seconds. Obama not only knew about Ayers's views in this regard; he obviously subscribed to them: was a member of the Chicago New Party begun by the Democratic Socialists of America; he worked closely with Ayers on "education reform" for years, he approved of Ayers's similarly fringe-Left views of the criminal justice system's treatment of juvenile crime, and, we are learning; and he was tightly aligned with ACORN, which he and Ayers funded and whose practices fit comfortably with the Ayers view of "participatory democracy").

The Congressional Dems who enabled this crisis are now being trusted to fix it?

Nothing could more painfully demonstrate what is wrong with Congress than the current financial crisis.

Among the Congressional “leaders” invited to the White House to devise a bailout “solution” are the very people who have for years created the risks that have now come home to roost.

Five years ago, Barney Frank vouched for the “soundness” of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and said “I do not see” any “possibility of serious financial losses to the treasury.”

Moreover, he said that the federal government has “probably done too little rather than too much to push them to meet the goals of affordable housing.”

Earlier this year, Senator Christopher Dodd praised Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac for “riding to the rescue” when other financial institutions were cutting back on mortgage loans. He too said that they “need to do more” to help subprime borrowers get better loans.

Frank and Senator Dodd wanted the government to push financial institutions to lend to people they would not lend to otherwise,

HUD Secretary Andrew Cuomo in 1998 explaining how the government was using legal coercion to force a bank to give mortgage loans to low-income and minority borrowers who otherwise wouldn't qualify. He then made it clear that this would be a continuing government policy and he acknowledged this would increase the risk of defaults. This is direct evidence that the government was interfering with markets to arrange outcomes -- social engineering was more important than sound economic policy.

Remember, Barack Obama early in his career was a community organizer who helped train ACORN workers, and he later was an attorney who represented them in their efforts to intimidate banks into making more subprime loans available. The success of these efforts in Chicago had a nationwide influence, and Barack Obama had a direct hand in them.

Yvette Clark divined segregationist intent in Palin’s references to Joe Six-Pack and hockey moms. “It leaves a lot of people out.”
