District Judge Orders Release Of Uighur Jihadists In D.C. By Friday

clipper's remarks: This is the very nightmare scenario I warned about. The courts' steps are outrageous, but predictable and inevitable. A lot of the blame here, however, goes to the administration and the military. They have long taken the position that radical Islamic ideology is not the problem, and that we need only worry about actively those taking up arms against the United States. They don't want us to talk about jihad — the better to keep us in the dark about jihadist ideology. Thus, the government rationalizes, the Uighurs are not a threat to us, only to the Chinese. That was all the daylight the judges need to say: OK, then release them in the U.S., since no other country — except China, where they'd be persecuted — will take them. The government's self-defeating argument is preposterous. Jihadists — and there is not question that the Uighurs are jihadists — do not recognize distinctions based on the Westphalia world of nation-states.

Now as the inevitable consequence of that ruling, seventeen hard-core Islamic jihadists who'd come from their homes in China to train at terrorist camps in Afghanistan — captured there by our armed forces, and held since at Guantanamo Bay — are on the brink of being released this week, not for return to China, but into the general population of our nation's capital, Washington, D.C.:

U.S. District Judge Ricardo M. Urbina said it would be wrong for the government to continue holding the detainees, known as Uighurs (WEE'-gurz), who have been jailed for nearly seven years, since they are no longer considered enemy combatants. Over the objections of government lawyers who called them a security risk, Urbina ordered their release in Washington D.C. by Friday.

Former federal anti-terrorist prosecutor Andrew McCarthy put this latest national peril into exactly the right context yesterday, apportioning blame appropriately between the courts and the lawyer-driven position of the Administration:

That Ayers' totalitarian revolutionary agenda isn't history is shown by Ayers today sitting on the directorate of the Miranda International Center, a think tank funded by the Venezuelan government of Hugo Chavez, unofficially a state sponsor of terror that just last weekend was found to be hosting terror training camps with Cuban and FARC operatives to attack its neighbors. Ayers is both a hero and adviser to Hugo Chavez and a colleague of Obama's.

A brief resume of Ayers on the Venezuelan government site describes him as "the leader of the revolutionary and anti-imperialist group The Weather Underground which initiated struggle against the government of the USA," which it calls "the empire."

Ayers is also described as having "developed courses around the urban reform (and) problems of capitalist education." That refers to Ayers' joint involvement with Obama in the Chicago Annenberg Challenge, a school "reform" project Ayers used to insert a radical socialist curriculu

Vice presidential candidate Barack Obama's chief strategist, David Axelrod, said yesterday that Obama "didn't know the history" of domestic terrorist bomber William Ayers' activities in the violent Weather Undergroud movement when he attended a political event at Ayers' home in 1995

CNN found the two having repeatedly crossed paths was Chicago's Annenberg Challenge project.

CNN also found that Ayers and Obama served "on the board" of a second organization, the Woods fund. "Among its receipients: Jeremiah Wright's Trinity Church where Obama attended and a children and family justice center where Ayers' wife worked."

Google released a useful new Gmail feature yesterday in its labs, which could help prevent the intoxicated from sending embarrassing late-night emails they might regret in the morning.

When activated, the program will force a user to solve a series of math problems before allowing any message to be sent.

They are not terribly difficult, but do serve as an extra line of defense in what can be a very dangerous habit.

The service is set by default to kick in only on weekend nights, but you can change the settings to apply whenever.

As for drunk dialing and texting, you’re still on your own.

In the U.S., Federal Reserve chief Bernanke yesterday signaled he's preparing measures with Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson to unfreeze markets where loans aren't secured by assets.

Bernanke is scheduled to speak on the economic outlook from 12:30 p.m. in Washington today. He and Paulson meet with European Central Bank President Jean-Claude Trichet and their other Group of Seven major-nation counterparts Oct. 10 in Washington.

It's those markets that are now ground zero for the crisis. A series of high-profile failures of financial institutions in the U.S. and Europe has made banks wary of trading with each other and sent rates soaring. The three-month London interbank offered rate, or Libor, that banks charge each other for loans was 4.29 percent yesterday, close to the highest since January.

``Libor is the problem and it has been the problem all along,'' said John Roberts, managing director at Barclays Capital Inc.

If they fix that, they are on their way to fixing a lot of things.

Al Gore Continues to Spew Climate Lies

Al Gore tells lies about the climate as fast as they can be debunked. Now he wants us to believe that nonexistent global warming is causing more powerful tornadoes and floods. Proclaims the Goracle:

Yes, we've always had tornadoes in Iowa and in Tennessee. But they're coming more frequently and they're stronger.

Via Watts Up With That, the following graph from the NWS/NOAA confirms that the number of severe tornadoes has been going down since the early 1970s. The trend for reported tornadoes overall is up, but that's only because improved technology and increased obsession with the weather has led to better reporting of minor incidents:

Gore also claims that recent flooding in Iowa was caused by global warming driving up the humidity. But water vapor only stays in the air for 10 days, whereas it has been 10 years since it's gotten any warmer — as University of Alabama, Huntsville confirms:

Bringing Alaskan Energy To The White House Race

It’s understandable that Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin emphasized energy issues during the vice-presidential debate. Her state is sitting on a lot of it — potentially 30 billion barrels.

That’s how much oil a recent U.S. Geological Survey report estimates is in Alaska, both onshore and offshore. And that is new oil, above and beyond deposits already proven to exist and those in production. The report concedes that such preliminary estimates can be off the mark, but if past experience is any guide, the actual amounts could well exceed America’s total proven oil reserves of 20 billion barrels.

Like 70 percent of Alaskans, Gov. Palin wants to make more of it available. And although a relative newcomer to the political scene, she does have experience on energy. She served as chair of the state’s Oil and Gas Conservation Commission in 2003-2004, and during her tenure as governor has handled several oil and natural gas-related issues.

In response to that and other criticism, the McCain campaign changed its figure from $32,000 to $42,000. In the Palin-Biden debate, Palin said that Obama “even supported increasing taxes as late as last year for those families making only $42,000 a year.” FactCheck objected. Under the heading “Palin’s False Tax Claims,” FactCheck wrote that Obama “did not in fact vote to increase taxes on ‘families’ making as little as $42,000 per year. What Obama actually voted for was a budget resolution that called for returning the 25 percent tax bracket to its pre-Bush tax cut level of 28 percent. That could have affected an individual with no children making as little as $42,000.”

It seems clear that Palin shouldn’t have used the word “families.” So what if, in the future, she and McCain claim that Obama voted to raise taxes on “folks making as little as $42,000”? That would satisfy FactCheck’s objections, right?

According to the New York Sun, university spokesman Brian Connolly confirmed that Obama graduated from Columbia in 1983 with a major in political science but without honors. What his grades were we do not know. As the New York Times reported, "Obama declined repeated requests to talk about his New York years, release his Columbia transcript or identify even a single fellow student co-worker, roommate or friend from those years."

Seems like a job for those 30 people sent to Alaska to investigate Gov. Sarah Palin.
