When an employer hires someone to perform a job role they look at several critical factors such as employment history, communication skills, experience, training, certification. Some of these are easily verifiable (communication skills), while others are more ambiguous (level of experience). When someone cheats or lies about any of these (such as certification or experience) and still gets the job or promotion, they harm their employer and peers by consistently under-performing in their job. Someone else has to be assigned to pick up the slack, and then they eventually fire and replace the under-performing person.

Cheating Part 2: Cheating Hurts The Cheater

The primary goal in becoming certified is to increase one’s credibility (with employer and peers) by increasing his or her knowledge and skills. When someone cheats, they undermine the learning process, which leads to a decrease in their credibility - the exact opposite of their goal! Cheating eventually catches up to them and the damage to their reputation can haunt them for years.

I’m sure that you all know someone who under-performed because they cut corners (like cheating). Cheaters don’t fool people for long.

Do you know someone who you suspect cheated to get certified? How did you know? How did you feel about that person? Would you recommend them to a future employer?

Is Your Site Well Marked

Think about this with regards to your blog or website. (I’ve talked about blog improvements before, so check that out, too.) Are you guiding people to what you want? If you’re selling something, do people know that’s what you want them to do? If you’re looking for more reader traffic, have you made it easy for people to subscribe at the end of every post? Do I know how to find the best material on your site?

Look at your site and think it over. Mark your site clearly and give people an easy path through it.

Blu-ray is dead?

Blu-ray is in a death spiral. 12 months from now Blu-ray will be a videophile niche, not a mass market product.

Recordable discs don’t play reliably across the range of Blu-ray players - so you can’t do low-volume runs yourself.
Service bureau reproduction runs $20 per single layer disc in quantities of 300 or less.
Hollywood style printed/replicated Blu-ray discs are considerably cheaper once you reach the thousand unit quantity: just $3.50 per disc.
High-quality authoring programs like Sony Blu-print or Sonic Solutions Scenarist cost $40,000.
The Advanced Access Content System - the already hacked DRM - has a one-time fee of $3000 plus a per project cost of almost $1600 plus $.04 per disk. And who defines “project?”
Then the Blu-ray disc Association charges another $3000 annually to use their very exclusive - on 4% of all video disks! - logo.

Most of the current Blu-ray players are junk: slow, feature-poor and way over-priced.

PeopleSoft Certifications are Back

Now run by Oracle Education, PeopleSoft Certifications are back. There are four offered; two functional, and two PeopleTools certifications. Both the HRMS Consultant and General Ledger Consultant exams are in beta until January 31, 2009. This puts the normally priced US $195 exam at only $50.
