There’s a lot you can do with Google if you can take advantage of it’s advanced search features. Expanding on this tip which shows you how to find music in open directories, here’s a step-by-step walkthrough on how to use Firefox Smart Keyword searches to speed up the process.

All you need to do is:

Create a bookmark in Firefox
Use the URLs in this text file as the bookmark location in your Firefox bookmarks (like in the pic above)
Assign a keyword to it - eg. music
Type the keyword (eg. music) followed by the search term (eg. beatles) directly into the address bar (NOT the search box). For example… type in music beatles , and Google will search open directories for Beatles music files that you can download.

You can modify the code in the text file to change file extensions, which opens a whole window for you. For example, you can even change it to PDF and DOC to look to e-books, or AVI and MPG to look for movies.

By the way, I’m assuming you already own the media you will be downloading :)

Like millions of others who believed there must be more to life than the libertine exuberance of the '60s, the Beatles hoped that the Hindu teacher Mahesh Yogi—known as the Maharishi, or "great saint"—would help them "fill some kind of hole," as Paul McCartney put it years later. So in the spring of 1968, the Fab Four traveled to the Maharishi's ashram overlooking the Ganges River in northern India, where they meditated for hours each day in search of enlightenment, as Bob Spitz recounts in his exhaustive 2005 biography, "The Beatles." The high-profile visit still echoes 40 years later—in, of all places, science, for the trip popularized the notion that the spiritual East has something to teach the rational West. Soon the Maharishi was on Time magazine next to the line "Meditation: The Answer to All Your Problems?"

Liverpool is 'most musical city'

Liverpool has been voted England's most musical city in a national campaign set up by the Arts Council.

The home of The Beatles and The Zutons - and current European Capital of Culture - took 49% of the vote in an online poll set up by the funding body.

Sheffield - which brought the world the Arctic Monkeys and Pulp - came second, while Manchester came third.

Liverpool Culture Company music manager Gordon Ross said: "The city today has a phenomenal pool of talent."

The CAT Scan/Beatles Connection

If not for the musical group, the Beatles, we wouldn’t have CT scans, aka CAT scans, the advanced medical scanning technology that lets your doctor see how badly your bones are broken.

The company, known as EMI for short, was a typical industrial scientific company at the time, working on military technology and the burgeoning field of electronics. Hounsfield was a skilled but unexceptional scientist, leading a team that built the first all-transistor computer in 1958.

That was the bang - over the next decade (and for years thereafter) the company earned millions of dollars from the fab four. So much money, the company almost didn’t know what to do with it.

EMI gave Hounsfield the freedom to pursue independent research. Hounsfield’s breakthrough was combining his work with computers together with an interest in X-rays. X-rays were still pretty much used to image bodies in two dimensions from a fixed position.

In the history of near-fame experiences, one story stands out. Pete Best was the Beatles' drummer just a few months before "Love Me Do" became a smash hit. His replacement, Ringo Starr, became a huge star. And Pete Best? He worked for decades as a civil servant in Liverpool.

Amazingly, there still has been no communication between Pete Best and the Beatles since the day he was fired. Not a phone call. Not a card. Not a letter. No chance meetings on the streets of Liverpool.

The Nature of Nature

clipper's remarks: How nature gained its positive connotation is a mystery. This unnatural understanding of nature likely developed during the 20th century, when human interventions — vaccines, food fortification, water chlorination — led people to forget how much nature sucked.

Natural is an unnatural term, entirely manmade. Nothing about it is natural anymore.

Nature today connotes perfect, wholesome, balanced, and right as rain. Natural cures, therefore, must be better than "unnatural" medicines created by flawed humans. This unquestioned positive nature of nature has created a multi-billion dollar industry of natural therapies.

But if nature is everything, then nature should encompass imperfect, unwholesome, unbalanced, and wrong as David Hasselhoff singing the Beatles' song "Rain."

In reality, nature is neither good nor bad. Nature is indifferent. Nature is merely the framework within which humans evolved. And while that might sound impressive, evolution is only concerned with getting humans to live to about age 15, mate, and then live a couple years longer to raise offspring.
