Once again the candidate was making factual errors about the only subject he cares about, imagining an Iraq-Pakistan border and garbling the chronology of the Anbar Awakening. Once again he displayed a tantrum-prone temperament ill-suited to a high-pressure 21st-century presidency. His grim-faced crusade to brand his opponent as a traitor who wants to “lose a war” isn’t even a competent impersonation of Joe McCarthy. Mr. McCain comes off instead like the ineffectual Mr. Wilson, the retired neighbor perpetually busting a gasket at the antics of pesky little Dennis the Menace.

As a pacifist who wants only bunnies and rainbows for everyone, I, of course, deplore violent macho talk ("If they bring a knife, we bring a gun") in our political discourse--I see no need for such verbal fisticuffs. (I say, If they bring a knife, we bring a lovely hostess gift.)

A year of training at the Pasadena Playhouse in California ended with his embarrassing dismissal -- along with his classmate and buddy Dustin Hoffman. In New York, he didn't cotton to Lee Strasberg at the Actors Studio. (''He played with peoples' heads a lot,'' Mr. Hackman says.) Working as a doorman at a New York hotel, he was recognized by his former Marine sergeant, who said he was a sorry sight. Only more colorfully.

''That was a turning point for me,'' Mr. Hackman says. ''I was so embarrassed by what I was doing in New York. And the fact that somebody cared enough to say something like that.'' It doesn't sound, objectively speaking, like an altogether caring remark, but it has clearly served as a kind of power pack for Mr. Hackman, a galvanizing moment that can be accessed whenever shame (or who knows what else?) is required.

The techniques of the consultants were openly discussed in an article by Dennis Donovan of the Wadley-Donovan Group, a nationally prominent site location firm. Writing in Expansion Management, he said a key tactic was to "negotiate incentives for the new project in two or three finalist locations, preferably in different states. Generally speaking, spend the most time negotiating in the preferred location. Use offers from the alternate areas for leverage." He further recommended pitting two cities against each other in the same metro area: "In the preferred area, tie incentive negotiations to a couple of sites, ideally in separate communities."

I second this concern. The business literature has found that tax breaks are not the most important component in locational decisionmaking for most corporations. The economic literature has also found that any business that makes a locational decision based on tax breaks is marginal at best and very often end up going out of business in quick order. Research on the effects of these tax breaks also finds that the costs to the municipality and the state are very often far higher than the benefits received. Not to mention that corporations also very often renege on their promises.

Mamet's polemic is certain to provoke negative response, some of which is justified. For instance, he seems awfully short on compassion. He offers the "wicked son" a zero sum game - either you're with us or you're against us. He seems more eager to express his anger at the host of "race traitors" he has met in his life than to explore more sensitive approaches to the project of bringing conflicted Jews back into the fold. The fold itself is something he describes in very stark terms, through an us-against-them world view that ignores certain complexities of the current Jewish reality. The vital task of learning to differentiate legitimate concern from real anti-Semitism, committed self-criticism from neurotic self-hatred, is something he alludes to only in the briefest of asides.

But as near as I can tell, few wayward Jews feel such angst. We are no longer in the age of “The Jazz Singer,” where children steeped in Jewish learning break their poor pious fathers’ hearts by trading pulpits for prosceniums. They may feel a pang or two around their Christmas trees, but as assimilated children of assimilated parents, their Jewish ties were pretty attenuated already. Here, too, Mamet seems a generation or two too late. Given his prodigious talent and insight, one wonders why. Maybe it’s a bizarre form of nostalgia, for a time when, thanks largely to their enemies, Jews felt more fraternal, and many were shtarkers — tough guys — rather than the deracinated wimps he thinks we’ve become, people whose favorite Jew, as he puts it, is Anne Frank.
