Reeder charges from $40,000 to $80,000 for an original life-size sculpture. A portrait bust in bronze goes for between $4,000 and $5,000.

Forget the lyre or flute. "Pan," at least in Adam Reeder's version of the mythological figure, dances to the iPod.

Reeder, who recently graduated with a masters in sculpture from San Francisco's Academy of Art University, is also a big tech enthusiast. He has attempted to wed classical sculpture with modern themes.

"Technology has changed the context but not the nature of humans or art," says Reeder. "Classical sculpture is typically very serious and everyday people come in and they're kind of ready to be bored. Then, they see this and say 'Dude, this is great.' That is because this is going right from me to people who like technology. Instead of art buffs, I want it to be geek to geek. This is our world."

Look: historically, I'm not a morning person. And to top it off, I was grimacing through some lower back pain that flowered over the weekend. So when you noticed me (white guy, brown hair, blue/white striped shirt, earphones, red book) and I noticed you (white girl, brown hair, nosering, headphones, blue book) for however brief a moment this morning, it was bolstering and made me forget the knife in my back. Haven't noticed you before, but if there's a next time, maybe I can slap myself out of the morning slumber and say hey. No promises, though.

Spider-bot pumpkin sure to terrify neighbors

If I wasn't so worried about traumatizing the kids in my neighborhood, dispensing trick or treat candy in this creepy spider bot pumpkin would be awesome.

It runs C on an Axon microcontroller. It uses all digital servos and can lift over twice its body weight. The software (soon to be given out open source) allows for six synchronous degrees of motion. Future additions will include foot sensors and a remote control option.

Based on that info, and other nuggets gleaned from the Trossen Robotics forums, you might be able to have a Creeper2 bot of your own ready for next year.

Or, better yet, put a Santa head on top of that thing and march it out in the living room on Christmas morning. Your kids are sure to have suppressed memories of it that will bubble up to the surface years and years from now causing a dramatic and crippling meltdown. Priceless.

Here's the ghost that the British Steam Car team is up against--Fred Marriott, seated in his Stanley Steamer, ca. 1906. Production models of cars built by the Stanley brothers were briefly popular at that time, but soon were overtaken by gasoline-powered cars with internal combustion engines.

The British Steam Car team poses with the vehicle. Not everyone has been able to stick around, given the number of weeks in which preparation has dragged on.

But there's been good news along the way, too. Wrote Wales on Thursday: "I am pleased to report that the car ran beautifully this morning. We have been carrying out low speed tests to check Jerry's software modifications and today were one of the last ones. We tested the slam acceleration which still needs a little more "tweaking", but reached in excess of 95mph again with just 90 second burn time. Tomorrow we are upping the burn time to 2 minutes so we should exceed 100mph and use approximately half of the track that we will have available come attempt time."
