The Roadable Canoe looks like a long wooden tricycle when used on land and a single rear wheel is used to change direction on land as well as in the water. Pretty cool, huh?

Steve’s Recumbent Bicycle. Steve got the idea a few years ago and, being a wood worker, he decided to build a bike (made of wood of course). His enthusiasm combined with sweat, created two wood-framed recumbent bikes: Woody and TreeBike

In Africa the main mode of transportation is the bicycle of course, and now through a project called “The Bamboo Bike” they want to revive the old fashion.

Every year a festival takes place in the Banaue region in the Philippines, it is a celebration of the tribal culture. In this particular festival, a number of men dressed in native costumes get on a wooden bikes and race each other.

A new NEWSWEEK Poll shows that he has a substantial double-digit lead, 51 percent to 36 percent, over McCain among registered voters nationwide.

In the previous NEWSWEEK Poll, completed in late May

Obama managed no better than a 46 percent tie with McCain

55 percent of all voters call themselves Democrats or say they lean toward the party while just 36 percent call themselves Republicans or lean that way

Obama is running much stronger at this point in the race than his two most recent Democratic predecessors, Sen. John Kerry and Vice President Al Gore

With the nomination of Barack Obama as the Democratic presidential candidate clinched, large sections of the white supremacist movement are adopting a surprising attitude: Electing America’s first black president would be a very good thing.

It’s not that the assortment of neo-Nazis, Klansmen, anti-Semites and others who make up this country’s radical right have suddenly discovered that a man should be judged based on the content of his character, not his skin. On the contrary. A growing number of white supremacists, and even some of those who pass for intellectual leaders of their movement, think that a black man in the Oval Office would shock white America, possibly drive millions to their cause, and perhaps even set off a race war that, they hope, would ultimately end in Aryan victory.

Fox News ratings struggling to keep up

Following up on an item from the other day, I thought it was worth noting that all three cable networks have seen their ratings go up during the presidential primaries, but among the “money demo,” Fox News is falling behind. (via TP)

The political season continues to be very good to CNN, which will officially announce on Tuesday that for the first time since 2001, it managed to beat the Fox News Channel in prime time for one quarter of the year in the category of news viewers most desirable to advertisers, according to Nielsen.

CNN’s ratings in prime time for viewers 25 to 54 were up 90 percent

Fox, which had 438,000 viewers, up 12 percent

MSNBC also had a strong quarter in prime time, growing 68 percent to 329,000 viewers

CNN has done especially well on the nights of contested primaries

except one, the Florida primary on Jan. 29. That was the only night when the Republican race was of higher interest than the Democratic one, and Fox won that night.

Talk is one tool that Yeskel is using to combat "classism" -- the oppression of people based on their perceived worth, beliefs and values. Though many people in the United States believe they live in a classless society, she says, where upward mobility is a given, the country has become far more stratified in the last 30 years -- a situation that leads to economic unfairness and distrust and misunderstanding between groups of people.

"Most people are confused about class," she says. "A lot of people think it's the same thing as race, but it's not. It's an elusive subject. The assumption is we're all mostly middle-class. It's not something we talk about, and it's not something we're supposed to talk about, because then you're undercutting the idea that we're all essentially equal."

'If hard work were the determinant for making a lot of money, you'd see a lot of millionaire lumberjacks.'

"A classist society is not a democratic one," she says. "And we are supposed to be a democracy."

For her last hurrah as a presidential contender yesterday, Hillary Clinton repackaged herself yet again, this time as a vocal and thoughtful feminist. I like this Hillary. Where has she been the last six months?

Finally, with the race over, yesterday we were presented with the kinder, gentler Hillary. And you know what? I liked her. She spoke passionately .- about things she had not mentioned during all those previous incarnations! She spoke as the worthy spokeswoman for gender equality. She radiated confidence and appeal. She called us to our better selves. She made us believe that we could move past the divisions that have hobbled us. . (Is this starting to sound familiar?) "Yes, we can!" she proclaimed.

"Hillary," I shouted back, "where have you been? This country is in dire shape! The planet is in dire need! The moment is critical! We need a woman like you! Have you ever considered running for president?"

What I do know is that I hope this Hillary stays with us.

"This is close to a miracle. I was certain that some things will not happen in my lifetime," said Sunila Patel, 62, a widow encountered on the streets of New Delhi. "A black president of the U.S. will mean that there will be more American tolerance for people around the world who are different."

The primary race generated unprecedented interest outside the United States, much of it a reflection of a desire for change from the policies of President Bush, who surveys show is deeply unpopular around the globe. At the same time, many people abroad seemed impressed -- sometimes even shocked -- by the wide-open nature of U.S. democracy, and the history-making race between a woman and a black man.

1965 is significant in two ways, as the culmination of the Civil Rights Movement and as the year when Congress finally showed some shame about the 1924 racist immigration laws that allotted big annual quotas to northern European Protestant countries and limited everyone else. Instead, every country in the world was given an upward limit of 25,000 ordinary immigrants. And then the Africans, Latinos (many of them actually Mayans & etc.), Arabs, and Asians came. And they often intermarried, both with already-constituted ethnic groups in the US, and with each other. That's Obama's family.

WASHINGTON — Barack Obama is competing strongly against Republican John McCain for women, Catholics and other groups that have shunned him in the Democratic primaries but will be pivotal in this fall's presidential race, early polling shows.

polls this month show the Illinois senator _ assuming he clinches the Democratic nomination _ leading McCain among women, running even among Catholics and suburbanites and trailing with people over age 65. Results vary by poll for those without college degrees. And though Obama trails decisively with a group that has strongly preferred Clinton _ whites without college degrees _ he's doing no worse than the past two Democratic presidential candidates.

Obama is doing well against McCain with groups he has dominated in the primaries. Polls show him leading the Arizona senator with young people and college graduates, though the results vary by poll among independents.
