Barack Obama is ready to honor the oath, to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States. Barack Obama is ready to be president of the United States.

People the world over have always been more impressed by the power of our example than by the example of our power.

In this decade, American workers have consistently given us rising productivity. That means, year after year, they work harder and produce more.

Now, what did they get in return? Declining wages, less than one-fourth as many new jobs as in the previous eight years, smaller health care and pension benefits, rising poverty, and the biggest increase in income inequality since the 1920s. American families by the millions are struggling with soaring health care costs and declining coverage.

IOWA CITY - John Edwards' admission

has prompted Hillary Clinton's forces to suggest that if Edwards had been forced out of the race sooner, she -- not Barack Obama -- would have won the Iowa Caucuses and thus, presumably, the nomination.

A University of Iowa Hawkeye Poll conducted the night of the Iowa Caucuses suggests the opposite: that the absence of Edwards would have helped Obama.

The survey administered

in every precinct in Iowa

included a question on second-choice preferences

Eighty-two percent of those who had Edwards as their first choice said if he was not viable, they would support another candidate. When asked which candidate they would support, 51 percent said Obama and only 32 percent picked Clinton.

"Monday's claim from Howard Wolfson

that two-thirds of Edwards supporters would have supported Clinton is just not supported in data

"Had Edwards not been running,

my data suggest that Obama would have ended up even further ahead of Clinton than he was."

For her last hurrah as a presidential contender yesterday, Hillary Clinton repackaged herself yet again, this time as a vocal and thoughtful feminist. I like this Hillary. Where has she been the last six months?

Finally, with the race over, yesterday we were presented with the kinder, gentler Hillary. And you know what? I liked her. She spoke passionately .- about things she had not mentioned during all those previous incarnations! She spoke as the worthy spokeswoman for gender equality. She radiated confidence and appeal. She called us to our better selves. She made us believe that we could move past the divisions that have hobbled us. . (Is this starting to sound familiar?) "Yes, we can!" she proclaimed.

"Hillary," I shouted back, "where have you been? This country is in dire shape! The planet is in dire need! The moment is critical! We need a woman like you! Have you ever considered running for president?"

What I do know is that I hope this Hillary stays with us.

Hillary Clinton has summoned top donors and backers to attend her New York speech tomorrow night in an unusual move that is being widely interpreted to mean she plans to suspend her campaign

Obama and Clinton spoke Sunday night and agreed that their staffs should begin negotiations over post-primary activities

Clinton is known to want Obama to assist black officials who endorsed her and who are now taking constituent heat

Earlier in the day it was reported that Clinton staffers were being urged by the campaign's finance department "to turn in their outstanding expense receipts by the end of the week,"

Politico wrote that members of Clinton's advance staff had received calls and emails Sunday night, summoning them to New York City and telling them their roles on the campaign are ending.

Hillary Rodham Clinton had far greater name recognition than Barack Obama in Puerto Rico, giving her a big advantage in the Democratic presidential primary Sunday, according to a poll for The Associated Press and television networks.

The survey also found that — unlike in recent primaries on the U.S. mainland — neither side's voters had a particularly harsh view of the other candidate.

Fully one-third, or 34 percent, of likely voters said they hadn't heard enough about Obama to express an opinion about him. Only 16 percent said that about Clinton, the former first lady and current U.S. senator from New York, a state with many Puerto Ricans.

Only one in five Obama backers viewed Clinton unfavorably and one in seven Clinton supporters gave Obama an unfavorable rating.

Coincidentally, the Clinton campaign under-performed in the caucus states, and the Clinton campaign proposes this metric - popular vote - which leaves them out.

It is incomprehensible to me that Mrs. Clinton can seriously be touting the notion, with the support of the punditocracy of CNN and Fox, that she is leading in the popular vote and should therefore be seriously considered as the most electable candidate in the November election.

She's including those who voted for her in Florida and Michigan's name recognition ballot saying that to exclude them would be to disenfranchise them.

What about the Democrats in Alaska, American Samoa, Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Minnesota, New Mexico, North Dakota, Nebraska, Washington, Hawaii and Wyoming who did not cast ballots because they were playing by the pledged delegates playbook and voted by caucus. What about them? Certainly if the rules are going to be changed and judgment is based on the 'popular' vote those voters in the eleven caucus states and Samoa will be disenfranchised. What about them?

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's prospects of persuading Democratic officials to override party rules and recognize all delegates selected in the Florida and Michigan primaries suffered a setback yesterday after lawyers for the party ruled that no more than half of those delegations could be legally recognized.

Democratic National Committee lawyers wrote in a memo that the two states must forfeit at least half of their delegates as punishment for holding primaries earlier than DNC rules allowed. Clinton (N.Y.) prevailed in both contests, although the Democratic candidates had agreed not to campaign in Florida and Michigan, and Sen. Barack Obama removed his name from the Michigan ballot.

But in the memo, party lawyers determined that full restoration, as sought by Clinton, would violate DNC rules

It's enough to make a girl want to run for president …

With Hillary Clinton edging ever closer to the won't-finish line in the Democratic primary, the inevitable rending of garments that a woman may never again mount a successful run for the presidency has begun.

The folks claiming we've allowed the presidency to slip through our fingers arrive at this conclusion by pressing the same flawed syllogism: The only viable woman candidate thus far has been Hillary; Hillary did not win; ergo there will never be another viable woman candidate.

If the Clinton candidacy has taught us anything, however, it's that a woman can straddle all those irreconcilable demands and still win.

The problem is, there are a number of polls that show Clinton in a close race with John McCain, many within the margin of error, not including a few that show Barack Obama beating McCain by a larger margin than Clinton.

I say that not counting Florida and Michigan is changing a central governing rule of this country - that whenever we can understand the clear intent of the voters, their votes should be counted. I remember very well back in 2000, there were those who argued that people's votes should be discounted over technicalities. For the people of Florida who voted in this primary, the notion of discounting their votes sounds way too much of the same.

How do you respond to a sociopath like this? She agreed that Michigan and Florida should be punished

Obama took his name off the ballot in deference to their agreement

That he should now be punished for playing by the rules and she should be rewarded for skirting them is unconscionable

she has now made it very important that Obama not ask her to be the veep

The way she is losing is so ugly, so feckless

this kind of person should never be a heartbeat away from the presidency

Clinton also suggested some were trying to "cover up" Sen. Clinton's chances of winning in key states that Democrats will have to win in the general election.

" 'Oh, this is so terrible: The people they want her. Oh, this is so terrible: She is winning the general election, and he is not. Oh my goodness, we have to cover this up.' "

I have never seen anything like it. I have never seen a candidate treated so disrespectfully just for running."

Sen. Barack Obama gives Hillary Clinton the benefit of the doubt that she had no hidden meaning when she invoked the assassination of Bobby Kennedy as an explanation for remaining in the Democratic presidential race.

"I have learned that when you are campaigning for as many months as Sen. Clinton and I have been campaigning," he told the Puerto Rico radio station Isla, "sometimes you get careless in terms of the statements that you make. And I think that is what happened here.

"Sen. Clinton says that she did not intend any offense by it," he added, "and I would take her at her word on that."

Her rank and willful dishonesty drives me up the wall

My husband did not wrap up the nomination in 1992 until he won the California primary somewhere in the middle of June, right?

The 1992 primaries ended on June 2

first caucus, Iowa, took place February 10th, more than one month later than this year's January 3rd caucuses

after eight years of Bush rule, I'm sick and tired of politically expedient alternate realities.
