Kent, Ohio - The shooting deaths 38 years ago of four Kent State University students by the Ohio National Guard need to be seen as a gift, ‘a lesson’ to the entire United States, a former United Nations weapons inspector said yesterday.

The retired Marine is a former U.N. weapons inspector in Iraq and a critic of the U.S.-led war in Iraq.

Ritter said whatever their feelings about the Iraq war, people should never denigrate the service provided by the Americans fighting there because they are willing to die for us.

“Have we done everything we can to ensure the sacrifice that they are prepared to make is in a cause worthy of the sacrifice?” Ritter said. “And I will tell you, no, we have not.”

The rights of American freedom of speech and assembly were trampled ‘on this very spot,’ shortly after students buried a copy of the U.S. Constitution near where the memorial stands to protest their government’s actions, Ritter said.

Those protesters were defending the Constitution, he said.

GENEVA (AP) — An Iranian envoy said Monday his government will not submit to extensive nuclear inspections while Israel stays outside the global treaty to curb the spread of atomic weapons.

"The existing double standard shall not be tolerated anymore by non-nuclear-weapon states," Ambassador Ali Asghar Soltanieh told a meeting of the 190 countries that have signed the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty.

Nuclear safeguards are far from universal, he said, adding that more than 30 countries are still without a comprehensive safeguard agreement with the International Atomic Energy Agency to ensure full cooperation with that U.N. body.

"Israel, with huge nuclear weapons activities, has not concluded" such an agreement or submitted its facilities to the IAEA's safeguards, Soltanieh said.

US Missile Hits Iraqi Hospital, 30 Injured

In news from Iraq, more than thirty people were injured on Saturday when a US missile struck a major hospital in Sadr City. The McClatchy Newspapers reports the rocket shattered hospital windows and sent many doctors running from the building, leaving the emergency ward without enough personnel to deal with injury victims. The US is continuing to carry out airstrikes in the densely populated Sadr City. Iraqi health officials said at least ten people, including two children, were killed on Sunday in Sadr City.

A US military judge dismissed the argument Friday that Guantanamo’s youngest prisoner, Omar Khadr, was a child soldier

and therefore in need of protection and not prosecution.

He alleges that after the grenade was thrown, he shot one of the occupants in the head and the chest, killing him, and then he shot Omar twice in the back. So at this point, we’re not sure if he was the one to actually throw the grenade.

More Than 200 Economists Denounce Clinton, McCain Gas-Tax Plans

May 5 (Bloomberg) -- More than 200 economists, including four Nobel prize winners, signed a petition rejecting proposals by presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and John McCain to offer a gas-tax holiday.

Columbia University economist Joseph Stiglitz, former Congressional Budget Office Director Alice Rivlin and 2007 Nobel winner Roger Myerson are among those who signed the letter calling proposals to temporarily lift the tax a bad idea. Another is Richard Schmalensee of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, who was member of President George H.W. Bush's Council of Economic Advisers.

Rivlin, who headed the CBO before running the White House budget office during the Clinton administration, was among the Clinton backers signing the petition.

The proposal has been rebuffed by House Democratic leaders including Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California and Financial Services Chairman Barney Frank of Massachusetts.
