ABC: Bush, Cheney, top leaders explicitly OK'd torture

ABC News is reporting senior Bush administration officials personally discussed and approved how top al-Qaeda suspects would be interrogated by the CIA. The group agreed on controversial interrogation techniques including physical assault, sleep deprivation, and waterboarding.

included Vice President Cheney, former National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and Secretary of State Colin Powell, as well as CIA Director George Tenet and Attorney General John Ashcroft.

One top official

quoted Ashcroft as saying, “Why are we talking about this in the White House? History will not judge this kindly.”

Condoleezza Rice is said to have provided decisive support, reportedly telling CIA officials, “This is your baby. Go do it.”

clipper's remarks: Is the anger of whites and blacks really comparable? Read this in a comment on a post critical of the Obama race speech, and have heard no one say it better.

On a mroe serious level Obama explains to whites the anger of blacks in terms of the massive wrongs done to them in this society and then turns around and equates this to the anger of whites -- immigrants in particular - to whom no such helping hand has been extended. It is as though he were equating the wrongs of growing up in slum areas with slum challenges in slum schools with facing the trauma of having your child compete for college slots with black competitors who have been granted a few extra points.

Obama cross-examines Crocker

While it seemed very cordial, Obama was able to hit Petraeus and Crocker very hard. Obama took them down a path. First, on Al Qaeda on Iraq. He got Petraeus to agree with him that the total elimination of Al Qaeda is an impossible standard for withdrawal. Next he goes after Crocker's points about Iranian influence, pointing out that both Iran and Al Qaeda are in Iraq because we invaded and that we can not expect to eliminate Iranian involvement.

Then came the hammer. Obama pointed out that if the definition of success is put so high - no Al Qaeda, no Iranian influence, a prosperous diverse democracy we will be there forever. He then points out that we still, after 8 hours of testimony, have no definition of success.

Crocker's weak response its "hard and complicated."

Representative Wexler goes after Peteaus hard makes a very good point. When we ask what is failure we get a littany of items. When we ask what is success we get nothing. I thinks that is exactly right and it is the fundamental problem in the entire argument.
