One reason is that Fannie and Freddie were subject to tougher standards than many of the unregulated players in the private sector who weakened lending standards, most of whom have gone bankrupt or are now in deep trouble.

During those same explosive three years, private investment banks — not Fannie and Freddie — dominated the mortgage loans that were packaged and sold into the secondary mortgage market. In 2005 and 2006, the private sector securitized almost two thirds of all U.S. mortgages, supplanting Fannie and Freddie, according to a number of specialty publications that track this data.

Clip Source: www.mcclatchydc.com

Subprime lending offered high-cost loans to the weakest borrowers during the housing boom that lasted from 2001 to 2007. Sarah Palin sent from private accounts. The ruling, by Craig Stowers of Anchorage superior court, came as the result of a lawsuit brought by a resident, Andree McLeod, against Ms. Palin, the Republican vice-presidential nominee. Ms. Palin has occasionally used private e-mail accounts to conduct state business, and her Yahoo accounts were hacked last month. The judge ordered the attorney general to contact Yahoo and other private carriers to preserve any e-mail messages sent and received on those accounts. An assistant attorney general told the court that the governor was no longer using here private e-mail accounts to conduct state business.

Tags: politics

<clipSource>http://www.boingboing.net/2008/10/10/panel-finds-palin-ab.html</clipSource>

Former governor Milliken backs away from McCain

clipped by: monstersmom

Clip Source: www.mlive.com

former Republican Gov. After all, why would record numbers of viewers watch the vice-presidential debate if the election's already over?

Meanwhile, the supposedly damaged Republican brand is proving suprisingly resilient. I see one of the two New Hampshire seats that flipped blue in '06 may return to the red fold next month. Where's the blowout?

A lot of the dynamite is well past its sell-by date: Two references last night to Ronald Reagan negotiating with Tip O'Neill. No one remembers who Tip O'Neill is. McCain might as well have been evoking misty watercolor mem'ries of Talleyrand . . . Obama, by contrast, is all future - which is understandable, given his past.

Clip Source: corner.nationalreview.com

Republicans have cause to be disappointed by last night: As everyone says, Obama wins by not losing. In the last months of the primary campaign, the press kept assuring Hillary fans that Obama's victory was inevitable and the shriller the media Obamaboppers got, the more bluecollar Dems sat on their hands. In the end all the King's horses and all the King's men had to drag the guy across the finish line. You couldn't replay his spectacular victory in slow-motion because it was already slower than any slo-mo technology ever invented.

So we already know there's a huge disconnect between the unstoppable Messianic force promoted by the media and the cooler appraisal by actual voters.

Tags: mccain, obama, "townhall"debate

<clipSource>http://corner.nationalreview.com/post/?q=YTgyYTMxMjM4NTBmMmRkNTM1MzE3ZWMzOTIzY2U2MDc=</clipSource>

CNN (Yes, CNN) Confirms Obama Is Lying To You About Bill Ayers

clipped by: merrie
clipper's remarks: It is the lie that furthers the story. They even interviewed Stanley Kurtz.

Bottom line: Just a guy in my neighborhood? Right now, the credit markets are frozen up and what that means, as a practical matter, is that small businesses and some large businesses just can’t get loans. If they can’t get a loan, that means that they can’t make payroll. If they can’t make payroll, then they may end up having to shut their doors and lay people off. And if you imagine just one company trying to deal with that, now imagine a million companies all across the country. So it could end up having an adverse effect on everybody, and that’s why we had to take action.

Nailed it

Tags: obama, bailout, economy

<clipSource>http://gowest.blogs.fortune.cnn.com/2008/10/08/why-obama-won-debate-no-2/</clipSource>

Why no outrage over foreclosures?

clipped by: masbury
clipper's remarks: Why do we automatically assume the buyers are at fault?
