Drug traffickers in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, have opened fire on a helicopter carrying a Santa Claus to one of the city's shanty towns.

Brazilian Santa escapes gunfire

The helicopter was taking an actor dressed as Santa Claus to a Christmas party in the favela of Nova Mare when it came under fire.

Two bullet holes were found in the fuselage when it returned to base.

The helicopter was flying over the shanty town of Vila do Joao when the attack happened and it is believed the drug traffickers mistook it for a police helicopter.

Santa later returned to Nova Mare by car to deliver his presents, where more than 1,000 children and parents were still waiting for his arrival.

The president of the local residents' association said the children were very sad as they had expected Santa to arrive by helicopter.

Three people have been killed and more than 30 injured in a stampede at a supermarket sale in China.

French chain Carrefour, in the city of Chongqing

The shop was offering large discounts on cooking oil. A crowd that had been waiting hours for the store to open then burst through the doors.

State media Xinhua said bargain-hunters were crushed underfoot in a sale to mark the 10th anniversary of the store's opening in the south-western city.

At least seven of the injured are in a serious condition, Xinhua said.

Cooking oil prices have soared by more than a third in the past year.

In Chongqing, Carrefour was reportedly offering 20% off rapeseed oil.

Carrefour, which is the world's second-biggest retailer, has been keen to expand in China as it booms and recently opened its 101st hypermarket in the country.

The potential problem has arisen because the first class area of its giant superjumbo contains 12 private suites complete with double beds.

Monkeys kill Delhi deputy mayor

The deputy mayor of the Indian capital Delhi has died a day after being attacked by a horde of wild monkeys.

SS Bajwa suffered serious head injuries when he fell from the first-floor terrace of his home on Saturday morning trying to fight off the monkeys.

city has long struggled to counter its plague of monkeys, which invade government complexes and temples, snatch food

One approach has been to train bands of larger, more ferocious langur monkeys to go after the smaller groups of Rhesus macaques.

The city has also employed monkey catchers to round them up so they can be moved to forests.

Culling is seen as unacceptable to devout Hindus, who revere the monkeys as a manifestation of the monkey god Hanuman, and often feed them bananas and peanuts.

ITs a list of all those captured and recorded by the regime - the importance of keeping such an article might not be readily apparent but when people are disappeared such documents may be the only trace of them left - let us hope its not a list of the dead but as the photo of the monk in the river shows - they are disposing of some of those detained.

Second photo is a particularly mocking bit of writing at the regime - the writing of it on the foot considered the lowest most insulting part of the body is no coincidence. Other shots are from the shooting that occurred around September 26. Let us hope

This time they target the heads of the country - perhaps only because we already have extensive sanctions against every other part of the country which have been strangling the economy for the last 17 years - sanctions which have also guaranteed that the west has no market influence on Burma anymore, making it such that the only countries with economic leverage are its supporters China and India. We need real policy not shoddy displays of self righteousness after which the continuing plight of the people is soon forgotten. GET SERIOUS!

US attacks Burma 'reign of fear'

President Bush announces new sanctions against Burma

He was speaking after tens of thousands of monks and other civilians marched through Rangoon in another day of mounting anti-government protests.

In a speech to the UN General Assembly, Mr Bush also announced new sanctions against Burma's military rulers.

Mr Bush said tighter sanctions against Burma's rulers would include visa restrictions on the Burmese leadership and their financial backers.

Analysts say further sanctions are unlikely to be effective without the support of Burma's main trade partners China and India.

clipper's remarks: In case you've been wondering what its like on the ground over there here are some videos of the monks protests - followed by a clip BBC did on the topic. Its important to note that the military regime has long justified its rule through its heavy associations with the Buddhist Sangha (community), while the monks have not really been supporters of the Regime they've been forced into an awkward political position for quite some time now. For them to rise up in protest is perhaps the most potent symbolic attack upon the regime (and as seen as such by locals) - and has only happened on a few occasions before (like the big democracy movement between 1988-1990). In the past they've protested by turning over their alms bowls to military leaders (denying the leadership any merit) which would be analogous to say a pastor refusing to let a corrupt or violent politician into church (in protest).

BBC paints them as looking to fail in the polls almost implying that their desire to disrupt elections is some sort of self serving power move. This may be fair, but at the same time one should consider their concerns - previous peoples movements (Jana andolan) in Nepal have been followed by brief acts of appeasement and institutionalized corruption (particularly the 1990 movement). I guess only time will tell if this is ego of egalitarianism.

Kumbhakarna is a mythological character from the Hindu epic Ramayana. Kumbhakarna, who slept for six months a year, was the brother of the Demon King Ravana.

Larry Craig toilet 'tourist site'

The Minneapolis airport toilet where US senator Larry Craig was arrested for allegedly soliciting gay sex is now attracting tourists, say airport staff.

"People are taking pictures,"

Mr Craig, a Republican from Idaho, pleaded guilty in August to disorderly conduct over the toilet incident.

"We had to just stop and check out the bathroom," said Sally Westby of Minneapolis, on her way to Guatemala with her husband Jon.

"In fact, it's Jon's second time - he was here last week already."

"People have been going inside, taking pictures of the stall, taking pictures outside the bathroom door."

The politician, who has a record of hostility to gay rights and is a married father-of-three, insists he is not homosexual.

Ice loss opens Northwest Passage

The most direct route through the Northwest Passage has opened up fully for the first time since records began, the European Space Agency (Esa) says.

Indigenous rights outlined by UN

The United Nations General Assembly has adopted a non-binding declaration on the rights of indigenous peoples after 22 years of debate.

370 million indigenous people in the world.

The General Assembly passed it, with 143 countries voting in favour and 11 abstaining.

Four nations - Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the United States - each with large indigenous populations, voted against.

Australia said it could not allow tribes' customary law to be given precedence over national law.

Estrada gets life for corruption

Former Philippine President Joseph Estrada has been found guilty of corruption and jailed for life.

embezzling about $80m (£42m)

forced from office in an army-backed revolt in 2001.

His son Jinggoy was acquitted of the charge of plunder.

"That's why I took a gamble. I thought the rule of law will prevail over here. This is really a kangaroo court. This is a political decision."

He was ousted three years after coming to power in a revolt backed by the army and the church. His vice-president Gloria Arroyo took over.

He was accused of making crucial policy decisions with late-night drinking buddies at the presidential palace, and he admitted fathering a number of children by different mistresses.
