Your Subject Librarian is your first point of contact with the Library. Feel free to contact her/him at any time with any enquiry about the Library or our services. The main responsibilities of the Subject Librarians are:

They liaise with Schools to ensure that the Library's stock and services support the teaching, study and research in the University.
They help staff and students identify and locate useful information for projects, essays, dissertations, theses and research.
They advise on the use of electronic information sources in their subject areas.
They give seminars, lectures and individual instruction on all aspects of information gathering.

Ordering eBooks

Fill in a Recommendation For Order Form and pass it to your School's Library Representative, who will approve the suggestion and send it to the Library for ordering if it is within the departmental library book budget (please specify on the form that you would like an eBook). The Library has accounts with both NetLibrary and Dawsonera and will order the item if available as an eBook from these suppliers.

Putting photocopies in the library

Staff can place photocopies of published materials in the Library for students to access - subject to the following restrictions (under the University's CLA licence): -

the library should own a print copy of the original [use the catalogue to check if we have the item is stock]. Please note that print-offs from electronic journals or eBooks are not covered by the licence for this purpose.

a copyright cleared copy is purchased by the individual or the School. This can be done through the library's interlibrary loan service . For more information contact libill@hw.ac.uk or call ext 3575

and

only one chapter of a book or article from an issue of a journal (or 5% of the book or journal) may be provided for any one course of study.

The Library VLE Toolkit

The Library VLE Toolkit is a reference resource for academic staff. It is set up as a VISION module visible to all instructors in the My Modules window on the VISION homepage. It provides notes on how to create links to library materials, examples of online reading lists and subject pages as well as information on how the library can help with information skills training in VISION. There are also sections on how to find ready-made learning materials for re-use and re-purposing and a copyright FAQ.

Digital copies of library material for VISION

The Library can order scanned (digital) copies of extracts of printed Library material to be made available to teaching staff and students on a particular course of study for the duration of the course, via a secure network (eg VISION). Digital extracts are stored in VISION's content collection and allow the full-text of print materials to be included in online reading lists. This service is made possible through the CLA (Copyright Licensing Agency) licence. More information.

Suggesting periodicals

There is a separate Library budget for periodicals. Each summer Schools are asked to consider their current subscriptions and decide whether they wish to make any changes. Because of the high rate of price increases for academic journals, funds for new subscriptions are very limited, and usually require the cancellation of other subscriptions of equivalent value.

Student Reading Lists

The Library's policy is to buy at least one copy of each book on an undergraduate Reading List; we usually buy additional copies for large classes, or where there is evidence of demand from lending records. Academic staff should send their Reading Lists to Mrs. Eve Dick (Riccarton Library) early in the summer vacation; she will check that the Library has the most recent edition of recommended books in sufficient numbers to meet demand, and will order new copies as required. There is a separate Library budget for Reading List material, so the cost of these items will not be charged to Schools' library budgets. New books for student Reading Lists may be ordered throughout the academic year by completing a Recommendation for Order Card and marking it "Course Book".
