The Google Chrome team assembled domain experts in various fields over the past six years, both through direct hires and acquisitions, to create a new browser and its critical components from scratch. GMail and Google Maps pushed the Web to its limits, taking advantage of browser technologies invented in Redmond but left dormant for far too long. Contributing to Firefox's core, writing browser extensions, and championing HTML could only take the $150 billion company so far: they needed to own the full browser to push their Web efforts forward at full speed.

Tags: chrome, google, browser

<clipSource>http://www.niallkennedy.com/blog/2008/09/google-chrome.html</clipSource>

Grid Computing on Macs

clipped by: lystrata

Clip Source: www.macresearch.org

About MacResearch

Clip Source: www.macresearch.org

OpenMacGrid

Script Repository

OpenMacGrid is a computing grid built up entirely of Macs, and open to Mac-using scientists everywhere. But in addition to being a particularly important cause of human suffering, technology failures are often very complicated social outcomes that involve a number of different kinds of factors. And this makes them interesting topics for social science study.

Tags: technology, management

<clipSource>http://understandingsociety.blogspot.com/2008/03/explaining-technology-failure.html</clipSource>

Updtes on Nepomuk/KDE Semantic Desktop

clipped by: lystrata

Clip Source: www.linux.com

Nepomuk and KDE to introduce the semantic desktop

If you follow technology trends, you have probably heard of the semantic desktop -- a data layer for annotating and sharing the information in your computer. But what you may not be aware of is that the semantic desktop is not a distant goal, but scheduled to arrive at the end of 2008. And, when it does, the idea will probably be implemented through the work done by the Nepomuk project, and, most likely, by KDE first.

"The first idea of building the semantic desktop arose from the fact that one of our colleagues could not remember the girlfriends of his friends," Bernardi says, more than half-seriously. "Because they kept changing -- you know how it is. The point is, you have a vast amount of information on your desktop, hidden in files, hidden in emails, hidden in the names and structures of your folders. Nepomuk gives a standard way to handle such information."

Tags: semantic desktop

<clipSource>http://www.linux.com/feature/144853</clipSource>

12 sided pdf calendar

clipped by: lystrata

Clip Source: www.ii.uib.no

Download a 12 sided calendar

Calendar on a regular

Computer scientists have proposed a new way to build data centers that could save companies money and deliver more computing capability to end-users.

The innovation is outlined in A Scalable, Commodity Data Center Network Architecture, co-authored with Mohammad Al-Fares and Alexander Loukissas.

However, when invoked by a normal browser, they will provide a end user GUI for the user to enter parameter values and browse the results (see the examples below) .

Tags: visual programming, pipes, yahoo

<clipSource>http://pipes.deri.org/</clipSource>

From Pirate boards to the Internet

clipped by: lystrata

Clip Source: www.bbsdocumentary.com
