VIDEO – A closer look at Plastic Logic’s Kindle killer

San Diego (CA) – Two days ago in San Diego, Plastic Logic wowed DEMOfall 08 attendees with its full-page electronic reader that was as thin as a pad of paper. Available next year, this reader can easily display Microsoft Office, PDF and other documents. It also has a touch-screen that lets users annotate documents by either drawing with their fingers or by tapping on a pop-up keyboard. But how will this reader compete with the Amazon Kindle? We talked to Plastic Logic’s marketing team to find out.

RadialNet is a network visualization tool developed for Umit during the Google Summer of Code 2007. In Umit it's called UmitMapper. It consists in a graphical tool to illustrate the Nmap network mapping. You can see a video demonstration based on version 0.3 here.

The story behind Google Chrome

Google released its second web browser yesterday afternoon, adding additional headroom for web applications stretching the limits of what it's possible to accomplish within a web browser. The Google Chrome team assembled domain experts in various fields over the past six years, both through direct hires and acquisitions, to create a new browser and its critical components from scratch. GMail and Google Maps pushed the Web to its limits, taking advantage of browser technologies invented in Redmond but left dormant for far too long. Contributing to Firefox's core, writing browser extensions, and championing HTML could only take the $150 billion company so far: they needed to own the full browser to push their Web efforts forward at full speed.

Nepomuk and KDE to introduce the semantic desktop

If you follow technology trends, you have probably heard of the semantic desktop -- a data layer for annotating and sharing the information in your computer. But what you may not be aware of is that the semantic desktop is not a distant goal, but scheduled to arrive at the end of 2008. And, when it does, the idea will probably be implemented through the work done by the Nepomuk project, and, most likely, by KDE first.

"The first idea of building the semantic desktop arose from the fact that one of our colleagues could not remember the girlfriends of his friends," Bernardi says, more than half-seriously. "Because they kept changing -- you know how it is. The point is, you have a vast amount of information on your desktop, hidden in files, hidden in emails, hidden in the names and structures of your folders. Nepomuk gives a standard way to handle such information."

Inspired by Yahoo's Pipes, DERI Web Data Pipes implement a generalization which can also deal with formats such as RDF (RDFa), Microformats and generic XML.

DERI Pipes are Open Source Software, ad as such they can be easily extended and applyed in use cases where a local deployment is needed.

DERI Pipes provides a rich web GUI where pipes can be graphically edited, debugged and invoked. The execution engine is also available as a standalone JAR, which is ideal for embedded use.

DERI Pipes, in general, produce as an output streams of data (e.g. XML, RDF,JSON) that can be used by applications. However, when invoked by a normal browser, they will provide a end user GUI for the user to enter parameter values and browse the results (see the examples below) .
