NZ fishermen land colossal squid

New Zealand fishermen have caught what is expected to be a world-record-breaking colossal squid.

Fisheries Minister Jim Anderton said the squid, weighing an estimated 450kg (990lb),took two hours to land in Antarctic waters.

Local news said the Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni was about 10m (33ft) long, and was the first adult colossal squid landed intact.

One expert said calamari rings made from it would be like tractor tyres.

"I can assure you that this is going to draw phenomenal interest. It is truly amazing," Steve O'Shea from Auckland's University of Technology told local media.

The squid could be the largest ever found

Colossal squid, which are found deep in Antarctic waters, are thought to be about the same length as giant squid (Architeutis dux) but are much heavier.

The species was first identified in 1925, but very few specimens have been found.

The first specimen recovered intact, a 150kg (330lb) immature female, was caught on the surface in the Ross Sea near the Antarctic coast in April 2004.

'Nearly dead'

Mr Anderton said the fishermen had been fishing for Patagonian toothfish in deep Antarctic waters when the squid - which was eating a toothfish - was caught.

SIZE COMPARISON

"The squid was almost dead when it reached the surface, and the careful work of the crew was paramount in getting this specimen aboard in good condition," he said.

The squid was frozen in the ship's hull and brought back to New Zealand for scientific examination.

"The colossal squid has just arrived in New Zealand and it is likely that it is the first intact adult male colossal squid to ever be successfully landed," Mr Anderton said.

Natalie Hobday Qualified for the 2006 World Equestrian Games

South African dressage rider Natalie Hobday has qualified herself to compete at the 2006 World Equestrian Games in Aachen, Germany. Aboard the Hanoverian stallion Callaho Wenckstern (by Weltmeyer x Western Star x Lindberg), Hobday achieved her qualification scores at the CDI Munich in May and the CDI Outdoor Gelderland in June.

Hobday's sponsor Callaho, a stud farm based near Kimberley (RSA), is the owner of the chestnut stallion Wenckstern. "Callaho Stud are major contributors to equestrian sport in South Africa and patrons of mine. They assisted me in acquiring Callaho Wenckstern. I have had five Grand Prix’s with him to date, so our relationship at that level is still new," Hobday told Eurodressage.

With her previous Grand Prix horse Edelmann, Hobday competed for South Africa at the 1998 World Equestrian Games in Rome and qualified for the 2002 WEG in Jerez de la Frontera, but was unable to go due to an injury. Hobday also qualified for the 2000 and 2004 Olympic Games but did not compete in them. "Due to reasons beyond my control I was unable to attend either of them. Edelmann is now 20 years old and lives a luxurious pensioners life in England. He has been retired for two years," Hobday explained.

Commuting between South Africa and Germany, Hobday is usually based in Germany with her trainer of nine years, Jonny Hilberath. On the road to Aachen, Hobday has planned to compete at the CDI Falsterbo and CDI Lingen and possibly at the CDI Verden. "Our training plan between now and WEG, in between the upcoming shows, is to try to improve as much as possible and to reach the best physical and mental form we can," Hobday said.

Okay, so you’re a country boy or gal at heart, but your new job has you making a go of urban life. What’s a nature-lover to do? Well, Kevin Van Braak may have the answer: a portable green camp ground. The artist has fabbed up at least two small trailers that convert into moveable green spaces. One of them mimics a grassy meadow, complete with a faux campfire and silk wildflowers. The other (after the jump) looks a bit larger and includes a brace of fake trees and a birdcall recording.

12 Writing Tips From George Orwell

George Orwell has earned the right to be called one of the finer writers in the English language through such novels as 1984 and Animal Farm, such essays as “Shooting an Elephant,” and his memoir Down and Out in Paris.

George expressed a strong dislike of totalitarian governments in his work, but he was also passionate defender of good writing. Thus, you may want to hear some of George’s writing tips.*

A scrupulous writer, in every sentence that he writes, will ask himself at least four questions, thus:

What am I trying to say?
What words will express it?
What image or idiom will make it clearer?
Is this image fresh enough to have an effect?

And he will probably ask himself two more:

Could I put it more shortly?
Have I said anything that is avoidably ugly?

One can often be in doubt about the effect of a word or a phrase, and one needs rules that one can rely on when instinct fails. I think the following rules will cover most cases:

Never use a metaphor, simile, or other figure of speech which you are used to seeing in print.
Never use a long word where a short one will do.
If it is possible to cut a word out, always cut it out.
Never use the passive where you can use the active.
Never use a foreign phrase, a scientific word, or a jargon word if you can think of an everyday English equivalent.
Break any of these rules sooner than say anything outright barbarous.

Discovery of largest known diamond

The newly discovered cosmic diamond is a chunk of crystallized carbon 50 light-years from the Earth in the constellation Centaurus. (A light-year is the distance light travels in a year, or about 6 trillion miles.) It is 2,500 miles across and weighs 5 million trillion trillion pounds, which translates to approximately 10 billion trillion trillion carats, or a one followed by 34 zeros.

The diamond star completely outclasses the largest diamond on Earth, the 530-carat Star of Africa which resides in the Crown Jewels of England. The Star of Africa was cut from the largest diamond ever found on Earth, a 3,100-carat gem.

The huge cosmic gem (technically known as BPM 37093) is actually a crystallized white dwarf. A white dwarf is the hot core of a star, left over after the star uses up its nuclear fuel and dies. It is made mostly of carbon and is coated by a thin layer of hydrogen and helium gases.

"Some people refer to it as 'Lucy' in a tribute to the Beatles song 'Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds.'"

Step 1

If you are standing - turn slightly and rest your weight on one foot. It may FEEL goofy, but you WILL look better.

If you are sitting – angle to one side or the other.

Step 2

Lean slightly toward the camera – Leaning slightly toward the camera adds interest, dimension, and a natural look to a photo. Think of having a long neck like a gazelle, and tilt your chin down just a bit to avoid the appearance of a double chin and also to prevent the camera from getting a view right up your nostrils.

Step 3

Models are taught to change state by developing a ‘trigger.’ So when they are about to have their picture taken, even if they are in a crummy mood, they can go from level 1 to level 5 in a heart beat. Firing a trigger is a reminder to do the things that make you look good. Believe it or not, THE most successful trigger we found over the years was called the ‘rear cheek squeeze.’ It’s really cool because it’s inconspicuous. Yes, it’s exactly what it sounds like; you squeeze the cheeks of your rear end together. Don’t make fun of it until you try it. To see it’s effectiveness try this experiment. Ask someone to sit on a chair and then ask them to squeeze their cheeks together. I have not met ONE person who doesn’t immediately smile and say something like, okay, now what?

Step 4

Learn to ¾ smile – People just don’t like pictures of themselves with huge smiles. Smiling too big exposes gums and causes your eyes to turn into slits.

Step 5

Never look directly at the lens – ALWAYS, look slightly ABOVE the lens.
