iPhone Patent Application

Still wondering if all the iPhone rumors are true? There has been a trail of clues about the iPhone’s existence all over the Internet for over a year now. But many people still remain skeptical. Perhaps the discovery of the iPhone patent application and a recent quote from Kevin Rose will make the skeptics iPhone believers.

First things first… the iPhone patent pictures. If you go to this page on the US Patent & Trademark Office website, you will find a patent filed by Apple Computer for a “portable computing device capable of wireless communications.” The mystery device is also defined as a “cell phone” and “media player.” Apple filed for the patent on August 7th of this year.

Although the patent page doesn’t include any photos of the “iPhone,” I was able to find several credible looking patent pictures on MYiPhone.com.

Now let’s talk about Kevin Rose. Apparently Mr. Rose, the mastermind behind the mega-popular website Digg.com, has his own “deep throat” informer at Apple HQ. This is what Rose had to say after a couple beers in his Diggnation video podcast.

“I don’t know if I should talk about this or not… I have a little bit of inside information on the Apple phone.”

Despite his initial reluctance, he did go on to talk about the iPhone. According to Rose, the iPhone will come in 4GB and 8GB versions and will feature a touch screen and a slide-out keyboard. This seems to support the credibility of the patent images from MYiPhone.com. Rose also said the iPhone will be ‘carrier independent’ and support both GSM and CDMA phone standards. This means just about anyone can use an iPhone. To quote Borat, “Very nice..”

The phone is to (supposedly) be released in January.

Microsoft Word Zero-day attacks

According to Microsoft, the software is currently investigating reports of a new 0-day attack on Microsoft Word. The affected software includes Microsoft Word 2000, Microsoft Word 2002, Microsoft Office Word 2003, Microsoft Word Viewer 2003, Microsoft Word 2004 for Mac, and Microsoft Word 2004 v. X for Mac, as well as Microsoft Works 2004, 2005, and 2006. Because the vulnerability exploited is brand new, and there is no patch available. Successful execution of this flaw could lead to backdoor remote access of an infected PC. In order for this attack to be successful, the end-user must first open the infected Word document. Do not open or save Word documents from un-trusted sources, such as unsocilited e-mail or Web sites.

Sue Barr peaked at 500 pounds when she decided gastric bypass was in her future. What she didn't envision was that two years later surgeons would lift the skin of her lower body like a giant pair of pants, reattaching it in a higher, tighter position.

Weight-loss surgery has helped hundreds of thousands of people lose massive amounts of weight. But often, after losing several hundred pounds, patients are left with sagging flesh that leaves them feeling trapped in a skin suit that's 10 sizes too large.

Often the only way to deal with the extra flaps of skin is a procedure called body contouring -- a tummy tuck for the whole body that is becoming increasingly popular.

It's an unpleasant surprise to patients who find that no matter how much exercise they do, sagging skin stubbornly remains. The surgery can cost $50,000 or more, and is rarely covered by insurance.

Barr's skin folds caused rashes, got caught in zippers, and made sex next to impossible. After losing 350 pounds, Barr's self-image improved only slightly.

The first procedure was a lower body lift, sometimes called truncoplasty or a belt lipectomy. Her surgeon made cuts around the circumference of her trunk, removed a diamond-shaped section of skin, then pulled up and reattached her skin in its lifted position. The surgery took seven hours.

"You could see a tan line before the surgery," Barr said. "Afterward it was up around my waist."

Body contouring can involve any combination of surgeries including a tummy tuck, upper arm lift, thigh lift and lower body lift.

Our office is made up of 6 workers and is located in the Potrero Hill neighborhood of San Francisco. We have a pile of dollars to spend on art and would love to consider some of your favorite artists.

Our office looks like this, with general decor leaning towards modern, lime green, orange, gray and white.
We aren't entirely conservative, but the work must not alienate our clients.
Bonus points for local artists, large-format work and conversation pieces.

Are people ever struck by stray bullets shot in the air?

Popular TV show "Mythbusters" addressed this question, and concluded that a bullet shot perfectly straight in the air probably isn't dangerous, because of terminal velocity. However (and this is a big however), firing a gun straight in the air is very difficult. It's far more likely that the bullet will be shot at an angle. These falling bullets can be, and often are, lethal.

In January 2006, a Mississippi farmer was paralyzed by a falling bullet. At a 2003 Ku Klux Klan initiation ceremony in Tennessee, a stray bullet struck a participant "on the top of the head and exited at the bottom of his skull."

The Straight Dope agrees that many people have been struck by stray bullets. Between 1985 and 1992, a trauma center in Los Angeles treated 118 people for injuries caused by falling bullets, and 38 of the victims were killed. The International Action Network on Small Arms is doing its best to increase awareness about the dangers of celebratory gunfire.

So, to wrap things up, shooting guns in the air is a dangerous and unwise activity. If you're excited and feel the need to make a lot of noise, we recommend you use a cowbell. It's annoying, but at least there's no threat of injury.
