There has been a trail of clues about the iPhone’s existence all over the Internet for over a year now. But many people still remain skeptical. Perhaps the discovery of the iPhone patent application and a recent quote from Kevin Rose will make the skeptics iPhone believers.

First things first… the iPhone patent pictures. If you go to this page on the US Patent & Trademark Office website, you will find a patent filed by Apple Computer for a “portable computing device capable of wireless communications.” The mystery device is also defined as a “cell phone” and “media player.” Apple filed for the patent on August 7th of this year.

Although the patent page doesn’t include any photos of the “iPhone,” I was able to find several credible looking patent pictures on MYiPhone.com.

Now let’s talk about Kevin Rose. Apparently Mr. Rose, the mastermind behind the mega-popular website Digg.com, has his own “deep throat” informer at Apple HQ. This is what Rose had to say after a couple beers in his Diggnation video podcast.

“I don’t know if I should talk about this or not… I have a little bit of inside information on the Apple phone.”

Despite his initial reluctance, he did go on to talk about the iPhone. According to Rose, the iPhone will come in 4GB and 8GB versions and will feature a touch screen and a slide-out keyboard. This seems to support the credibility of the patent images from MYiPhone.com. Rose also said the iPhone will be ‘carrier independent’ and support both GSM and CDMA phone standards. This means just about anyone can use an iPhone. To quote Borat, “Very nice..”

The phone is to (supposedly) be released in January.

Tags: technology

<clipSource>http://www.coolest-gadgets.com/20061206/iphone-patent-application/</clipSource>

$1,000 Need for Speed Carbon (Xbox 360) Tournament

clipped by: lorisknight1219

Clip Source: us.f582.mail.yahoo.com

Will you win out or spin out?

To help give you some ideas, we checked in with a few of our buddies to see:

1. What comic-related gift or gifts would they recommend giving this year, and why?
2. This is going to be a little shameless, but I recommend a subscription to PvP: The Animated Series. The comic geek on your Christmas list will get a brand-new, fully animated PvP short every month all through 2007. It’s the gift that keeps on giving all year long. You can buy a subscription for your friend right off our website. Just enter in your buddy’s email address and a holiday greeting, and Santa will deliver his subscription ID and password right to his mailbox.

2. At the top of my list is the new super-mega Invincible hardcover book. It’s a giant brick of the best superhero comic book on the market. You would think that my friend Robert would just set me up with one, but no. I gotta ask for it for Christmas.

Brian Wood

1. For dads and brothers, a full set of the Punisher MAX trades to date.

For little sisters, nieces and cousins, a copy of Cecil Castellucci’s young adult novel Boy Proof, and see why she is such a perfect choice to head up DC’s new MINX line.

For anyone else, any of the following graphic novels: Fun Home, Persepolis, Sloth or old Tintin reprints.

2. My Amazon list’s full of Criterion releases (including Harlan County, USA) and reference books I need for my upcoming Northlanders series for Vertigo.

Ed Brubaker

Tags: entertainment, comic books

<clipSource>http://blog.newsarama.com/2006/12/04/blognewsarama-gift-giving-guide/</clipSource>

Top 10 Female Cops on TV

clipped by: lorisknight1219

Clip Source: logo-blogs.com

10. Lt. According to Microsoft, the software is currently investigating reports of a new 0-day attack on Microsoft Word. The affected software includes Microsoft Word 2000, Microsoft Word 2002, Microsoft Office Word 2003, Microsoft Word Viewer 2003, Microsoft Word 2004 for Mac, and Microsoft Word 2004 v. X for Mac, as well as Microsoft Works 2004, 2005, and 2006. Because the vulnerability exploited is brand new, and there is no patch available. Successful execution of this flaw could lead to backdoor remote access of an infected PC. In order for this attack to be successful, the end-user must first open the infected Word document. Do not open or save Word documents from un-trusted sources, such as unsocilited e-mail or Web sites.

What she didn't envision was that two years later surgeons would lift the skin of her lower body like a giant pair of pants, reattaching it in a higher, tighter position.

Weight-loss surgery has helped hundreds of thousands of people lose massive amounts of weight. But often, after losing several hundred pounds, patients are left with sagging flesh that leaves them feeling trapped in a skin suit that's 10 sizes too large.

Often the only way to deal with the extra flaps of skin is a procedure called body contouring -- a tummy tuck for the whole body that is becoming increasingly popular.

It's an unpleasant surprise to patients who find that no matter how much exercise they do, sagging skin stubbornly remains. The surgery can cost $50,000 or more, and is rarely covered by insurance.

Barr's skin folds caused rashes, got caught in zippers, and made sex next to impossible. After losing 350 pounds, Barr's self-image improved only slightly.

The first procedure was a lower body lift, sometimes called truncoplasty or a belt lipectomy. Her surgeon made cuts around the circumference of her trunk, removed a diamond-shaped section of skin, then pulled up and reattached her skin in its lifted position. The surgery took seven hours.

"You could see a tan line before the surgery," Barr said. "Afterward it was up around my waist."

Body contouring can involve any combination of surgeries including a tummy tuck, upper arm lift, thigh lift and lower body lift.

Tags: med-tech

<clipSource>http://www.wired.com/news/technology/medtech/1,72136-0.html</clipSource>

Deck the walls with Successories!

clipped by: lorisknight1219

Clip Source: ask.metafilter.com

Help us spend $7k on art for our office. The catch: we're supposed to finalize our choice by Thursday, 12/7.

Our office is made up of 6 workers and is located in the Potrero Hill neighborhood of San Francisco. We have a pile of dollars to spend on art and would love to consider some of your favorite artists.

Here's where we're at so far:

Leaning towards photography.

Leaning towards SF-centric themes, or even Potrero Hill themes if possible.

These photographers are already on the short list: Sean McFarland, Heather Champ, Liz Hickok.

One of our workers is gunning for Galen Rowell.

Our office looks like this, with general decor leaning towards modern, lime green, orange, gray and white.

We aren't entirely conservative, but the work must not alienate our clients.

Bonus points for local artists, large-format work and conversation pieces.
By Gary Shteyngart. Random House, $24.95.
Shteyngart's scruffy, exuberant second novel, equal parts Gogol and
Borat, is immodest on every level - it's long, crude, manic and has
cheap vodka on its breath. It also happens to be smart, funny and, in
the end, extraordinarily rich and moving. "Absurdistan" introduces
Misha Vainberg, the rap-music-obsessed, grossly overweight son of the
1,238th richest man in Russia. After attending college in the United
States, he is now stuck in St. Petersburg, scrambling for an American
visa that may never arrive. Caught between worlds, and mired in his
own prejudices and thwarted desires, Vainberg just may be an antihero
for our times.

Scribner, $27.50.
A quietly powerful presence in American fiction during the past two
decades, Hempel has demonstrated unusual discipline in assembling her
urbane, pointillistic and wickedly funny short stories. Since the
publication of her first collection, "Reasons to Live," in 1985, only
three more slim volumes have appeared - a total of some 15,000
sentences, and nearly every one of them has a crisp, distinctive
bite. These collected stories show the true scale of Hempel's
achievement. Her compact fictions, populated by smart, neurotic,
somewhat damaged narrators, speak grandly to the longings and
insecurities in all of us, and in a voice that is bracingly direct
and sneakily profound.
