On April 6, 2008, Barack Obama visited the San Francisco region, zipping from event to event all day long, from one end of the Bay Area to the other.

What? you might ask. How did I miss that? If only I had known, I would have gone to see him.

Well, there's a reason you didn't know about it. Obama didn't want you to know about it. Because the events he was attending weren't for people like you.

They were for people with lots and lots of money, who use that money to gain access and influence with politicians -- especially politicians who might become president.

So although the San Francisco Bay Area is probably the most pro-Obama section of the entire country, with Obama signs and stickers visible everywhere you turn, when Obama himself actually visited his electoral home base, he ignored the hoi polloi -- all the little people who swoon over him -- and instead, he spent the entire day with the rich.

Flickr has introduced video's

For many years Flickr has been one of the leading photographic (photo sharing) websites mixing both amatuer and professional photographers.

On the 8th of April 2008 Flickr (part of Yahoo) decided to introduce 90 second video uploads. Many members believe this is the start of Yahoo leading Flickr down the Social Networking (Facebook - MySpace).

A lot of people believe this will encourage people to send in videos that contain footage boring everyday stuff that will flood photo pools and send long standing members elsewhere.

BBC changes story to suit eco campaigner

The BBC News environment analyst, Roger Harrabin, decided it was his and the BBC's right to alter an article (blogged about here) that a climate change activist by the name of Jo Abbess found inconvenient to her absolute belief in man made global warming and the evils of carbon dioxide.

It appears Jo Abbess was upset that the original article by Harrabin (which he has quietly edited) would add to a growing body of skepticism when more people wake up to the fact there has been no net global warming since 1998. So she demanded Harrabin change his piece - and she got her wish. She is not a scientist. She is not a climatologist. She is just an activist who has latched onto a cause to believe in and obsess about. Yet despite her lack of qualification she has manged to make the BBC News change one of its articles. She was so pleased, she leaked the email exchanges to show other climate change activists what they can achieve when they put a bit of pressure on their sympathisers at the BBC.

Among the debts reported this month by Hillary Rodham Clinton’s struggling presidential campaign, the $292,000 in unpaid health insurance premiums for her campaign staff stands out.

The campaign provides health insurance to all its employees, their spouses, partners and children — and that wasn’t interrupted by any lag in payments to insurance providers, said Jay Carson, a Clinton campaign spokesman. … But the unpaid bills to Aetna were at least two months old, according to FEC filings.

They show the campaign ended last year owing Aetna more than $213,000 for “employee benefits.”

During the first two months of the year, the campaign did not pay down any of that debt. In fact, it accrued another $16,000 in unpaid bills last month, and it finished the month owing Aetna $229,000.

Obamas’ Tax Returns Show Donation Spike

Senator Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle, sharply increased their charitable donations as Mr. Obama began to run for president and the family’s income increased from book sales, according to tax returns that the couple released on Tuesday.

Some of the largest donations went to the Trinity United Church of Christ

All told, the couple gave $27,500 to the church in 2005 and 2006.

The Obamas’ returns are striking on a number of levels. They show that the couple made very few charitable contributions, sometimes less than 1 percent of taxable income, until Mr. Obama began his run for the White House.

In 2004, before Mr. Obama entered the Senate, he and his wife gave $2,500 to charity, 1.2 percent of the taxable income. The next year, the donations jumped, to $77,315, or nearly 5 percent of the taxable income.

“Their charitable giving only went up when it looked like he was campaigning for the presidential office,”

Woman who gambles away a million dollars sues for 20x that much.

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) -- She lost nearly $1 million at Atlantic City's casinos, and now she wants them to pay.

Arelia Margarita Taveras says they had a duty to notice her compulsive gambling problem and cut her off.

She's suing six casinos for $20 million. Experts say it's a longshot.

Taveras said she was so addicted to gambling that she would go days at a time without eating or sleeping, brushing her teeth with disposable wipes so she didn't have to leave the table. Sometimes, she'd pass out.

The president of the Casino Association of New Jersey said casino workers undergo training on how to spot problem gamblers and refer them to help. But he said it's ultimately the individual gambler's responsibility to seek it.

Homeschoolers in California have a hero in their corner after the state appeals court ruled Feb. 28 to severely restrict homeschooling after hearing a case that involved one family. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger denounced that ruling.

Schwarzenegger has also promised parents they will be able to educate their children at home if they choose to even if it means he has to change the law himself.

"Every California child deserves a quality education, and parents should have the right to decide what's best for their children," Schwarzenegger said in response to the ruling, which said children educated at home must be taught by a credentialed teacher.

"Parents should not be penalized for acting in the best interests of their children's education," Schwarzenegger said. "This outrageous ruling must be overturned by the courts, and if the courts don't protect parents' rights then, as elected officials, we will."

Ramón M. Barquín, 93, a Cuban military officer who was imprisoned after leading an unsuccessful coup against Fulgencio Batista in 1956, died of cancer March 3 at his home in San Juan, Puerto Rico

Col. Barquín was the Cuban military attache to Washington from 1950 until 1956, when Batista summoned him to return to the island nation to lead its army.

Barquín, a popular military leader whose support Batista expected, quickly launched "the conspiracy of peers" in early April 1956 and led hundreds of Army officers in an attempt to overthrow the U.S.-backed dictator. The coup failed almost immediately. The leaders were arrested and court-martialed, and Col. Barquín was sentenced to six years in prison

Six months after the coup attempt, Fidel Castro landed in western Cuba and launched his guerrilla campaign, and Batista's new officers proved unable to defeat it.

International Climate Change Conference in NYC

I was surprised to learn that Al Gore had been offered an opportunity to address this conference, and his usual $200,000 speaking fee and expenses were met, but that he declined.

I also know that invitations went out to NASA GISS principal scientists Dr. James Hansen, and Dr. Gavin Schmidt

They have declined the formal invitation sent, even though it would be easy for them to attend, given that NASA GISS is located just a few blocks away at Columbia University.

Since recent polls indicate that about 50% of Americans remain unconvinced that global warming is a serious issue, it would seem this would be a perfect place for Mr. Gore, Dr. James Hansen, and Dr. Gavin Schmidt to bridge the crevasse.

I am truly disappointed that Mr. Gore in particular has chosen to ignore that half of the population, and this conference that speaks to that half. Therefore I hope Dr. Hansen, and Dr. Schmidt will reconsider and walk the few blocks or hop a taxi to attend.

Climate change could lead to a heatwave in the south-east of England killing 3,000 people within the next decade, a Department of Health report said today.

It put the chances of a heatwave of that severity happening by 2017 at 25%.

Without preventative action, the report said that a nine-day heatwave, with temperatures averaging at least 27 degrees over 24 hours, would cause 3,000 immediate deaths, with another 3,350 people dying from heat-related conditions during the summer.

Hepatitis C Scare At Las Vegas Clinic

A Las Vegas clinic may have infected a handful of patients with hepatitis C, and some 40,000 more should be tested for the blood-borne virus, health officials said Wednesday.

An investigation determined that "unsafe injection practices related to the administration of anesthesia medication might have exposed patients to the blood of other patients," the statement said.

Chief health officer Lawrence Sands said anyone who received anesthesia at the clinic from March 2004 to Jan. 11 should be tested for the virus, along with hepatitis B and HIV.

Hepatitis C is a chronic, potentially lethal virus that can cause liver ailments, including cancer and liver failure.
