"Endless" Unreleased Michael Jackson Songs Coming to a Store Near You

"Michael Jackson had a mountain of unreleased recordings in the vault when he died — music that is almost certain to be packaged and repackaged for his fans in the years to come. The material includes unused tracks from studio sessions of some of Jackson's best albums, as well as more recently recorded songs made with Senegalese R&B singer and producer Akon and Black Eyed Peas frontman will.i.am. A public affair?

In other MJ news, The Washington Post says that Jackson put his "multimillion-dollar estate in a trust for his children and mother." The Post also suggests that Jackson's funeral and/or memorial service will likely be big, public affairs that will allow fans to participate in the farewells. The funeral will apparently not take place at Neverland, according to MTV.

StreetWars Return to New York City

Some New Yorkers are starting summer with a throw back to their youth, spending June in a month-long water gun assassin tournament known as "StreetWars."

“StreetWars,” an urban game of hide-and-seek tag, is transforming New York City into a playground. Players signed up and paid a registration fee of $45 in exchange for a "dossier" with "targets" who, by the game's rules, are other agents with secret names. The dossier also includes real names and photos. The game, according to the StreetWars site, began at midnight on June 8 and ends June 29.

Khalil Greene and Joey Votto were placed on the disabled list last Friday for social anxiety disorder and “stress-related issues,” respectively, joining Zack Greinke and Dontrelle Willis as prominent major leaguers to be sidelined by mental issues.

It is rare for a professional athlete to take time off for mental issues, but it has happened three times in just the first two months of the major league season. Detroit Tigers pitcher Dontrelle Willis missed the opening six weeks of the season due to an anxiety disorder, and both St. Louis Cardinals shortstop Khalil Greene and Cincinnati Reds outfielder Joey Votto were placed on the 15-day disabled list Friday for mental health issues.

On May 28, 1959, two female monkeys named Able and Baker became the first living creatures to survive a space flight.

Two female primates, Able, a rhesus monkey, and Baker, a squirrel monkey, were launched into space in a Jupiter AM-18 missile, two years before any human male would make the same attempt, writes Mental Floss.

According to NASA, the Able-Baker mission was conducted in order to test the effects of weightlessness. At the time, “one of the prevailing theories of the perils of space flight was that humans might not be able to survive long periods of weightlessness”

A project in the North Woods of Maine calls for volunteers willing to howl at wolves, an unusual conservation effort that has been successful in the past.

According to the Bangor Daily News, the Wolf Inquiry Project has put out a call for volunteers "willing to spend a night howling like wolves in Maine's North Woods, and who won't be scared off if they get a response." The project is an example of a howling survey, and is aimed at determining if wolves are present in the state.

Rupert Murdoch bought MySpace in 2005 because he was impressed with how Internet users had covered the 2004 tsunami in South East Asia, as the Wall Street Journal’s Julia Angwin recounts in her new book, Stealing MySpace: The Battle to Control the Most Popular Website in America. The titan of print and television news was “amazed that some of the best footage of the massive waves was available online though amateur video—and not on television or in newspapers.” How this amazement equated with his purchasing the parent company of the self-appointed “MTV of the Internet” for the memorable sum of $500 million is anyone’s guess. Angwin does let us hazard a few.

Like good nightclub promoters, MySpace sought out the ladies, then created an experience that everyone enjoyed. But is the party coming to an end?

John Updike is one of America’s most beloved authors, known for “The Witches of Eastwick,” the “Rabbit” novel series and his final work, “The Widows of Eastwick,” published just months before his death on Jan. 27, 2009.

Early Days

John Hoyer Updike was born in Reading, Pa. on March 18, 1932. An only child, he was raised by his mother, Linda Grace Hoyer Updike, an aspiring writer, and his father, Wesley Russell Updike, a high school science teacher. The three lived with his grandparents in Shillington, Pa. for much of his childhood. When he was 13 years old, the family moved to nearby Plowville and lived in his mother’s birthplace, a farmhouse on an 80-acre farm.
