Legislative committee releases investigation into firing of public official

The investigative report concludes that a family grudge wasn't the sole reason Gov. Sarah Palin fired the public safety commissioner but says it likely was a contributing factor.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Sarah Palin unlawfully abused her power as governor by trying to have her former brother-in-law fired as a state trooper, the chief investigator of an Alaska legislative panel concluded Friday. The politically charged inquiry imperiled her reputation as a reformer on John McCain's Republican ticket.

Investigator Stephen Branchflower, in a report by a bipartisan panel that investigated the matter, found Palin in violation of a state ethics law that prohibits public officials from using their office for personal gain.

On the other side of the Atlantic, tomorrows news stories are already out by early evening in the U.S. And Friday's papers are talking about a release of documents about Troopergate that purportedly show Sarah Palin herself wasn't involved in continual pressure on Alaska's public safety commissioner Walter Monegan to fire Palin's former brother-in-law, Alaska State Trooper Mike Wooten. But her husband, First Dude Todd Palin, hounded police chiefs to get Wooten fired, according to the documents.

Rupert Murdoch's flagship tabloid, The Sun, with over 6 million readers daily, has the story, and so too (in more unflattering detail) does ITN News:

A report on the case, which made international headlines after Mrs Palin's surprise selection as the Republican vice presidential nominee, will be released on Friday.

(Provideniya, Russia) Governor Sarah Palin, the Republican Vice Presidential nominee, has said that she can see Russia from her house. Across the Bering Strait in Provideniya Bay sits the town of Provideniya, Russia and its mayor Dimitri Andropov. He says that he can see Palin showering from HIS house. “And it is very nice.”

Mayor Andropov added that his small town, like America, is transfixed with the buxom Governor. “We have a shower watchman on duty 24/7. And when the delightful Palin turns on the water and lets down her hair, the alarm sounds, telling everyone to rush to my house for a show. The kids love it.”

Leonid Andropov, the Mayor’s brother, said that the ability to see Palin shower has given him and the other men a newfound respect for her. “She’s a very thorough cleaner, which is tough when one is dealing with moose guts, wolf blood and oil…And she doesn’t have a mustache, which is just a big plus for us.”

ANCHORAGE -- Jerry McCutcheon went to Sarah Palin's office here last week to request information about the firing of former Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan, the scandal that for weeks has threatened to overshadow the governor's role as Republican presidential candidate John McCain's running mate.

Why, he wanted to know, did he have to call a campaign office 4,300 miles away to find out what was going on in Alaska government? The longtime civic activist phoned his local state representative, Les Gara, who quickly filed a protest.

McCain staffers have even been assigned to answer calls for Palin's family members, who have been instructed not to talk.

"Why did the McCain campaign take over the governor's office?" the Anchorage Daily News demanded in an editorial Saturday.

Is McCain planning on stealing the election the way his mentor did?

Republican Mailing Leaves Florida Voters Confused

McCain campaign to Florida voters has Democrats saying they're the victim of dirty tricks.

"I thought, well that's strange, because I'm a Democrat. And when I opened the envelope, there was a card that said I was listed as a Republican with my registration number. So I immediately got my Democratic card, and the registration number was not the same," she says.

"So I just felt that there was some diabolical reason for doing this mailing," she says. "Why would you spend the money?"

Some Democrats have said they are also concerned that the mailing might be used to challenge voters at the polls, if letters are returned as undeliverable. But postal officials say that with this kind of mailing, any undeliverable mail is destroyed, not returned to the sender — in this case the RNC.

I have never posted on a liberal blog before - if this is too long or inappropriate - please tell me - I am not sure what is customary. - I hope I do not insult anyone - I just have to get this off my chest.

I have been a long time conservative - a true conservative - and have been horrified by the recent theocratic fascist turn of my beloved Republican Party. I was the Vice-President of the College Republicans in the late 80s at my college.

The Palin pick has absolutely horrified me. For the first time in my life - I donated 1000.00 to a political campaign - that of Senator Obama. Indeed, the donate button on the Obama website was so overwhelmed on his servers last night - it took me till 1:29 AM to get through to donate.

I often wondered in all my years of history courses how the citizens of the Roman Republic or of Nazi Germany let it happen. I do not have to wonder anymore - I am now living through it

Remember Lynn Forester de Rothschild, the fantastically wealthy wife of an heir to England's most influential and storied banking dynasty? About a year ago, she was a Hillary Clinton supporter, and had this to say:

"I think if history is our guide, we've had stronger economies, more wealth creation, under Democratic presidents than we have under Republican presidents."

Please allow that to sink in. As Matthew Yglesias sagely observed, irony is truly dead. The real reason that Forester de Rothschild probably doesn't trust Barack Obama is that his economic plan will raise taxes on people in her income bracket (the spectacularly rich one) by upwards of 10 percent. So not, technically, because Obama is an elitist. More like because he's targeting the elites, like Forester de Rothschild herself.

Sarah Palin of Alaska, has refused to testify in a legislative inquiry into whether Ms. Palin or members of her administration abused their power in the dismissal of a top state administrator, a spokesman said Thursday.

Mr. Palin, one of 13 people served with subpoenas in the inquiry, is a close adviser to his wife and is at the center of the controversy over the firing in July of Walt Monegan, then the public safety commissioner.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Nebraska Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel said his party's vice presidential nominee, Sarah Palin, lacks foreign policy experience and called it a "stretch" to say she's qualified to be president.

"She doesn't have any foreign policy credentials," Hagel said in an interview published Thursday by the Omaha World-Herald. "You get a passport for the first time in your life last year? I mean, I don't know what you can say. You can't say anything."

Could Palin lead the country if GOP presidential nominee John McCain could not?

"I think it's a stretch to, in any way, to say that she's got the experience to be president of the United States," Hagel said.

I was a registered Republican. I have changed to UNA. I am sorry to say I voted for Bush in the last in the last election. I have since lost my job, home and savings. I would hope Americans can see that McCain/Palin are simply not what this country needs. I am afraid it would be in fact more of the same.

Sarah Palin has portrayed herself as a foe of pork-barrel spending, pointing in particular to her role in killing the $398 million "Bridge to Nowhere” between Ketchikan (pop. 7,400) and its airport on Gravina Island (pop. 50). I "told the Congress, 'Thanks, but no thanks,'" she said in her speech accepting the Republican vice presidential nomination. "If our state wanted to build a bridge, we were going to build it ourselves."

But Gov. Palin’s administration acknowledges that it is still pursuing a project that would link Ketchikan to its airport -- with the help of as much as $73 million in federal funds earmarked by Congress for the original project.
