Earlier this week, someone on the Republican side of the aisle put out the word: The best way to discredit combat veterans who disagree with the President’s policies is to insinuate (or directly say) that they are being "used" by the nefarious Left, that they are being "fed" information, and that they can’t think for themselves.

The idea is to suggest that common soldiers couldn’t possibly formulate the complex, nuanced, and knowledgeable opinions on military and foreign policy needed to compete on the national scene—at least not to the extent that Beltway sophisticates like Joe Watkins can. Or hypocritical draft-dodgers like Rush Limbaugh.

Yes, unfortunately, it’s come to this. Republican strategists and radio hosts haven’t had a leg to stand on all week with the Rush Limbaugh suicide bomber hoopla. So when we at VoteVets.org (and other media organizations) have come after them, they’ve had to fall back on accusing us of being ignorant simpletons

It is made up of three main parts.

Corporatism, which is based on the belief that whatever makes money is good—and should not be restrained.
Neo-con megalomania, which is the belief that American power is absolute, irresistible, and always good, and should therefore be used—without restraint.

And right-wing religion, which is the certainty that this movement’s form of Christianity is God-commanded; therefore it should rule America and, through America, the world—and any restraint against it is opposition to God.

People with theological beliefs don’t mind lying. It’s for the greater good.

People with theological beliefs routinely lie to themselves.

In their theological minds, the theory is always true. Only reality is flawed.

Listening to Bush—and Cheney and their supporters—is exactly like listening to a Marxist explaining away Stalin. And Mao, and the gulags, and the East German secret police, and the madness of Ceausescu.

Lies About The Iraq War

1. The war is over.

2. Well, maybe we went about it the wrong way, but at least the world is better off without Saddam Hussein.

3. Not bad, a quick conflict and very few civilian deaths.

4. Yay, we've liberated the Iraqi people.

5. We're finally rebuilding Iraq into a modern state.

First of all, you can't have a beginning, middle or end to something that doesn't exist. I don't recall congress ever declaring war on Iraq. And I certainly don't see how the largest most powerful military system in the world bombing the hell out of some messed up third world country we've already been bombing for twelve years anyway really warrants the word "war."

Two places – the right wing rantings of a former architect, quoting non-existent paper, and Bellamy's own feverish imagination. Monbiot is damning about all this:

It is hard to convey just how selective you have to be to dismiss the evidence for climate change. You must climb over a mountain of evidence to pick up a crumb: a crumb which then disintegrates in the palm of your hand. You must ignore an entire canon of science, the statements of the world's most eminent scientific institutions, and thousands of papers published in the foremost scientific journals. You must, if you are David Bellamy, embrace instead the claims of an eccentric former architect, which are based on what appears to be a non-existent data set. And you must do all this while calling yourself a scientist.

Delusions about democracy are subverting peace and freedom. The American system of government is collapsing thanks to ignorant citizens, lying politicians, and a government leashed neither by law nor Constitution. While presidents and pundits harp on democracy’s inevitable spread around the world, it is perishing at home.

Victorious politicians routinely invoke the "will of the people" to sanctify their power. But voters cannot countenance what they do not understand. The "will of the people" is often simply a measure of how many people fell for which lies, how many people were frightened by which advertisements, and which red herrings worked on which target audiences. Rather than the "will of the people," election results are often only a one-day snapshot of transient mass delusions.

White House Homeland Security Advisor Fran Townsend was asked at a press conference earlier this week what evidence she had that Osama Bin Laden was still alive, considering the fact that he has been gravely ill and on a kidney dialysis machine while traversing the harsh terrain of the Pakistani border region. Townsend's response was to refuse to discuss the matter and immediately leave.
