On the other side of the Atlantic, tomorrows news stories are already out by early evening in the U.S. And Friday's papers are talking about a release of documents about Troopergate that purportedly show Sarah Palin herself wasn't involved in continual pressure on Alaska's public safety commissioner Walter Monegan to fire Palin's former brother-in-law, Alaska State Trooper Mike Wooten. But her husband, First Dude Todd Palin, hounded police chiefs to get Wooten fired, according to the documents.

Rupert Murdoch's flagship tabloid, The Sun, with over 6 million readers daily, has the story, and so too (in more unflattering detail) does ITN News:

A report on the case, which made international headlines after Mrs Palin's surprise selection as the Republican vice presidential nominee, will be released on Friday.

Sarah Palin sent e-mails blasting trooper probe

Alaska official who says he was dismissed for not firing her ex-brother-in-law gives copies to state ethics investigators.

EAGLE RIVER, ALASKA -- Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, John McCain's vice presidential running mate, wrote e-mails that harshly criticized Alaska state troopers for failing to fire her former brother-in-law and ridiculed an internal affairs investigation into his conduct.

Monegan has given copies of the e-mails to state ethics investigators to support his contention that he was dismissed for failing to fire Trooper Mike Wooten, who at the time was feuding with Palin's family.

Earlier in the day, an aide to Palin refused to give a deposition to a legislative investigator reviewing Monegan's firing, the Associated Press reported.

When the probe was launched, Palin said she and her staff would cooperate fully.

John McCain, a member of the House of Representatives in the mid-1980s, often held court at a table near the bar at Bullfeathers, a popular Capitol Hill watering hole, telling jokes and matching hangers-on drink by drink.

McCain loved to tell jokes about lesbians, blacks, Hispanics and the Vietnamese community that occupied a large section of Arlington County, Virginia, just south of the District of Columbia.

Alan Greenspan said so last fall. The former chairman of the Federal Reserve, safely out of office, confessed in his memoir, "Everyone knows: the Iraq war is largely about oil." He elaborated in an interview with The Washington Post's Bob Woodward, "If Saddam Hussein had been head of Iraq and there was no oil under those sands, our response to him would not have been as strong as it was in the first Gulf War."

Thanksgiving is a treasured American holiday that's synonymous with many nostalgic threads: turkey roasting in the oven, family coming to dinner, treasured friends celebrating together, special preparations for the feast, a roaring fire for the gathering, peeling chestnuts, and cooking the time-honored cranberry sauce. While vegans hold many of those same images, we certainly veer in another direction when it comes to the turkey roasting in the oven. We seek a higher plane, one that honors the living turkey and respects its right to live free of the butcher's knife. We rejoice at the Thanksgiving table because we are free from the need to kill an animal, cook it, and eat its flesh forkful by forkful.

Mountain residents for years have ducked accountability for their life choices.

"I don't think people fully appreciate that the home is a participant in the fire, rather than just something that is in the way," said Jack Cohen, who is arguably the foremost expert on defending homes from wildland fires. "It continues the wildfire."

Trees hang in clusters over the roofs of thousands of houses. Standing nearby are stands of trees with orange-colored needles, a sign they are dead. In some cases, live trees protrude through openings in homes that were built around them.

In one of the towns, a group called the Arrowhead Woods Architectural Committee rarely let anyone cut down a tree, no matter its condition. The group also required new roofs be made of wood shake, which is akin to pouring gasoline on top of a house.

Blueprint for disaster

People kept coming and the development continued. Workers built Big Bear Dam in 1884 to bring water to Redlands. Twenty years later, what became Lake Arrowhead was formed by another dam then known as Little Bear Dam.

Los Angeles developers bought the second dam and renamed the body of water Lake Arrowhead. They would focus, they said, not on irrigation but recreation for the city folk in Los Angeles looking for a breath of fresh air. That was where money was to be made.

Residents noticed damage inflicted by bark beetles, the current scourge killing today's forest. In the late 1920s, they thought they had vanquished the insect.

In 1957, Lake Arrowhead's Chamber of Commerce begged the state highway for a new road. They asked for an escape route because they saw how the mountains had become a firetrap. It was never built.

The book has just about all of the answers when it comes to fire dangers in the San Bernardino Mountains. Officials just won't let the public see it.

A year ago, the Mountain Area Safety Taskforce (MAST) generated maps and handed them to battalion chiefs from outside the region who came to fight the Old Fire. The book, which is so detailed it identifies dangers on specific stretches of roads, warns incoming firefighters about hazards and where to flee if a wildfire overtakes them.

Residents can now go online, type in their address and learn loads of information, including whether they live in an area deemed a "very high fire danger." About 130,000 homes are considered to be in that zone.

Fire Devastation

Lake Arrowhead. October 22, 2007, Monday morning residents of Deer Lodge Park awoke to Debbie and her husband, Tim, who live below the Edison substation, pounding on their doors. “Fire! Fire!” rang through the cold, Santa Ana Wind. Residents had little time to evacuate. Jim Williamson said, “I opened the back door an saw 100 foot flames coming up from the canyon below. DLP homeowner, Carol Banner said, “Peter Brierty, San Bernardino County Fire Marshall, had dinner at their home last night.” We had a discussion about the dangers of these conditions.

Firefighters were quick to respond and saved the cabins in Deer Lodge Park. They were stationed, hoses ready as the flames roared up the hill. Just as the pine trees closest to the neighborhood exploded the firefighters blasted the fire with water while others foamed the houses. Others used garden hosed to wet down the decks and patio furniture. Deer Lodge had dodged a bullet.
