AT&T’s controversial edit of comments about President Bush from a Webcast of Pearl Jam’s performance at Lollapalooza last week was not the first time the telecommunications giant has silenced political statements by musicians.

An AT&T spokeswoman initially characterized the sudden audio edit that silenced Eddie Vedder’s lyrics “George Bush, leave this world alone” and “George Bush, find yourself another home” during Pearl Jam’s performance in Grant Park last Sunday as “an unfortunate mistake” and “an isolated incident.”

God-Fearing People: Why are we so scared of offending Muslims?

During the greater part of last week, Slate's sister site On Faith (it is jointly produced by Newsweek and washingtonpost.com, both owned by the Washington Post Co., which also owns Slate) gave itself over to a discussion about the religion of Islam. As usual in such cases, the search for "moderate" versions of this faith was under way before the true argument had even begun. If I were a Muslim myself, I think that this search would be the most "offensive" part of the business. Why must I prove that my deepest belief is compatible with moderation?

And the advocates and apologists of bigotry and censorship and suicide-assassination cannot be permitted to take shelter any longer under the umbrella of a pluralism that they openly seek to destroy.

Can lies become truth? Could a Media System, controlled by a few Global Corporations with the ability to overwhelm all competing voices, be able to turn lies into truth?

How many of those names are wrong? Statistically, 1 in 20 people on the list may have committed a crime. So 95% of the people on the list are kind of Innocent. Now when I say kind of innocent, see 54% of the people on the list are unequivocally Guilty of being
Black. Now you do the arithmetic. 95% on the list of 57,700 people, 54% of them Black; Catherine Harris certified the election of the president of the United States on the basis of a plurality in Florida of 537 votes. You do the arithmetic, and you tell me what happened in that election.

NZ MPs Outlaw Satire of Parliament

"New Zealand's Parliament has voted itself far-reaching powers to control satire and ridicule of MPs in Parliament, attracting a storm of media and academic criticism. The new standing orders, voted in last month, concern the use of images of Parliamentary debates, and make it a contempt of Parliament for broadcasters or anyone else to use footage of the chamber for 'satire, ridicule or denigration.' The new rules are actually more liberal than the previous ones, but the threat of felony contempt is new."
